In Defense of April

  • This is a video about April Nardini from Gilmore Girls. I break down some common criticisms of April. In sum, April has been compared to Rory Gilmore because of her intelligence and quirkiness, which has bothered some fans. Others have found April annoying and rude to Luke. Other fans don't like April because she doesn't function as a character but as a plot device.

I think Lorelei handled it very poorly too, which she oddly seems to be let off of the hook for by viewers and how the show portrays it. A month or two is really not the longest amount of time to spend processing such life-changing information. Rory says so herself to Lorelei when she's first told. Luke has already established himself as a "needs space" kinda guy when he's stressed, and Lorelei has already shown Luke by this point that she tends to disregard his boundaries when he asks for that space. Of course he's going to shut down with something this big. And, to his credit, he did genuinely attempt to tell her before she found out the hard way, more than once, but she was too busy or wrapped up in her own life events to give him the space/time.

I've been most confused by when exactly Lorelei and Rory moved to Star's Hollow - they've been there for years, but there were also several references that indicated they moved when Rory was in middle school or something, and so I'm not sure exactly when Luke became such a huge part of their lives. Also given that he tends to step in for big things but holds himself back from getting involved in regular day-to-day, and that Lorelei was always present to lead the parenting, it's possible that Luke never really thought hard about it. He was a fatherly figure, not actually a father.
If a random 12 year old appears in front of me, I wouldn't know what they would like to do either - if I'm tongue tied from shock or stress I might offer them a colouring book (and then instantly realize that was obviously wrong when the kid makes fun of the suggestion)

i think april was kind of set up to fail as a character in a very unfair way to her. she was presented to the audience in kind of a "who is she to encroach on what luke, lor, and rory have" which is just so bizarre. the show wanted it to seem like the three of them were this little family and then here comes this "fourth wheel" butting in and disrupting things. the way the story is presented, it automatically makes the viewer recoil and see her in a negative light, i think. it's not fair to her at all. a lot of the anger towards her i think stems from that. we're told over and over again since episode one that it's luke, lor, and rory and the three of them look after one another and are a little unit so to speak. so when someone else comes in and disrupts that, of course the audience is gonna be like "wtf" about it. but that's not fair to april who was literally just existing. i think overall the writing failed her as a character.

i liked April. Yes, she was clearly a plot device to break up Luke and Lorelai, but she was an interesting character and she helped us to see another side of Luke. I liked their dynamic and the fact that she sometimes she treated him like her best friend and she wasn't ashamed of him (like when they were on a bus or when she forgot a lunch that he made for her and then returned even though her car already left - it shows that it was important to her to show him that she appreciates his attempts at being a 'real' father).
unpopular opinion - i think Lorelai was the jerk in this situation and the one one who broke up her and Luke. She was selfish and wanted Luke's life to revolve around her, like it always used to be. She didn't want to understand that now Luke has a person that is more important to him because duh, it's his daughter. Of course he handled it badly, he met his daughter when she already was a teenager, it's not like raising a child from the start, like with Rory. Luke respected her relationship with Rory but she didn't want to be the same in his situation. She acted like an immature spoiled child who was jealous that she's no more the centre of Luke's life. That ultimatum was a horrible thing to do, especially considering the fact that she knew that Luke is not big on ultimatums (their first break up was because she tried to push him into deciding to do something right away, when he clearly wasn't ready for that decision).

I agree with you, April is just a very nice and clever kid, very easygoing, the ideal daughter. The problem is how Luke reacted towards Lorelei after discovering his “new” daughter: not telling her or at least postponing when he was going to tell her, and then, refusing her help, that is potentially very hurtful.
Lorelei is at fault too for not saying what she thinks, she let the situation get worse and worse. Communication is key in such a situation. Giving Luke an ultimatum was not a good idea either, it’s possible to have a conversation without asking an immediate reaction especially for getting married! Lorelei knew that Luke was slow to react, giving him the time (at least a few days) to digest the new information regarding Lorelei’s real feelings would have been a good idea.
Anna is certainly not a good mother as she wanted to deprive her daughter from a father, before and later. That’s not a good parenting strategy. I understand that she got upset about the birthday as she didn’t personally know Lorelei but her reaction was a little extreme after that.
Luke is a good father, he just sucked at keeping his relationship with Lorelei alive and happy.
It was never April’s fault, April is just a kid who did nothing wrong. She just wanted to know her father, it’s totally normal.

She was so excited to join the show too. A gilmore girls fan, seemingly getting her wish come true. The writers really did her dirty. (They could have gone meta and made an episode about a child star being harrassed, and also had an ep adressing how Luke and Lorelei made their own bed. Then) there should have been a post episode interview segment adressing the issue directly. (Or they could have just had the interwiew segment, wt mo meta ep, but) they should have adressed it! Those so called fans should have been called out and shamed, and the actress should have gotten a public apology and support from the writers. They put her in that situation, they owed her a defense. They were both hiding their needs from each other, and it was always going to erupt in the end, and April was just a catalyst. I love that Luke and Lorelai end up together, but I also think that they needed to break up when they did. It forced them to work out their issues and grow as people. I really like April, she is, as you mentioned, a smart, kind and open kid. Comparing her character to Rory, she even surpasses Rory on some points, like being more open, having more friends her own age, having her life in order. Of course, how Luke and Lorelai reacted, when April appeared, was hella annoying to me, but I never felt like April was at fault for this but the adults involved. Starting with her mother, going to Luke hiding the fact he has a child and Lorelai reacting childish (not for the first time). April is a great character, and I would have loved to see her more often in the show. Especially to compare her and Rory and how they became real adults. Concidering the fact, that April is just 4 to 5 years younger than Rory, April could have been the little sister to Rory, kind of taking Rory into her place, by being as smart as Rory, but having some better character traits, than her older stepsister. While Rory took a lot things for granted and was a spoiled kid, that somehow lost grip to reality just because every adult around her treated her like something special, April seems way more grounded and less spoiled. Of course, her mom hypes her somehow, that´s what moms usually do, no matter how smart a kid is, but as April surounds herself with kids her own age, she grows more naturally, than Rory, which is mainly surounded by adults, treating her as some sort of an adult, too. Rory has, exept of Lane, no friends to compare her own behavior to, until she later become friends with Paris and her group. Even then, Rory always seems some kind of superios, while April, thought she is really competitive, is well integrated and, again, really grounded.
Looking back, I think, having more of April in the show, would have been really good for the show and for the character development of the main characters.

She's not bad as a character, but the plot device aspect has already been done in the show (Lorelai/Christopher/Sherry), and this time we aren't happy the unplanned pregnancy messed up Lorelai's love life. I might have liked April more if Luke and her mom had been married/divorced and he was involved in her life from the start. She's more well-rounded as a person, so until the YitL, she's more grounded. I never found her mocking or intrusive, but that could be my personal bias. She's a teenager, she's supposed to be annoying sometimes.

I personally do not like April. I’m not saying she’s a bad person i.e. the fact that Luke and Lorelai break up is not her fault, she’s not mean to Luke, just teasing him, and she’s a sweet person in general. She’s not a bad character, either. But she is annoying. Something about her bugs me, I don’t know exactly what. But every scene with April, I’m resisting the urge to hit fast forward.

I was a big fan of Vanessa Marano at the time due to the clique film and later the switched at birth series.
I never found April annoying. She was just trying to exist. She was trying to get to know her father and there is nothing wrong with that.
As soon as she was a “threat” to Luke and Lorelai, people hated her for petty reasons, in my opinion.

Let's be honest. We all hate how they used this soap opera plot device of a mysterious girl appearing out of nowhere as Luke's daughter. This without making Luke seem like a deadbeat dad. It's just to farfetched, specially when it is a supposedly tightly knitted community like Starshollow. Where everyone talks to everyone.
On top of that, the kid is brilliant like Rory! UGH!!!
I feel disrespected as audience by the writer. This is not fault of Vanessa Marano, she was put in a very difficult role. Not even Jennifer Lawrence level of charisma could've saved that character.

You can't talk about April without talking about the downfall of the series. She's a bump in the road. An extremely annoying bump, that breaks your car. Fine, the character alone is not that bad, but her presence ruined the storyline. I hate it when shows use unnecesary drama just to break up a couple. Imagine if the writers left the show to develope organically, we had a beautiful actual wedding by the end of that season, not without some crazy fun moments. The final season with some new married couple struggles and a lot of fun. Ending the last episode with the famous 4 words, said by Lorelai and Luke to Rory. That is my ending. A year in the life was a waste of time and not even then we had a proper wedding.

The plot line annoyed me not April. It was so random and unnecessary. And the fact he didn't tell Lorelai was crazy too and then never tried to incorporate her in April life even though they were supposed to her married. It also made no sense for them to postpone their wedding because he finds out he has a child. Anna also annoyed me the way she acted towards Luke, like the reason he wasn't in April life was because she never told him about her.

I always thought April was fine. What I didn't like was how Luke used her as an excuse to not be open with Lorelai, thus keeping the two apart. I feel like April was thrown in to prevent Luke and Lorelai from going places. But that didn't mean she as a character was bad in my opinion. She's just a kid, how everyone else handled it should be their fault and their fault only.

You know, everyone likes to talk about how much Luke loved Rory, but we rarely see Rory love him back. She doesn't keep in touch with him when he's not on speaking terms with Lorelai. Or when Rory herself isn't on speaking terms with Lorelai. They never have interactions with just the two of them. She immediately accepts Christopher every time. So I think I liked April, because I finally got to see Luke get some love back. I think it's the same reason I like the Luke and Jess dynamic so much. I like seeing Luke be appreciated and loved. I rarely got that from his relationship with Rory

I think "yes" is the answer. She's a child and adorable, and tried to meet her father... fine...
That they wrote her in ONLY to cause drama and pull Luke and Lorelai apart is a problem. BUT that's a writing problem, not the character herself. In the sense of the character, she's alright and not terrible.... but the situation and HOW she was written into the show, and more over forced to be a wedge between L&L is the problem.
I WISH they'd written her in better and more authentic.

I also think that it’s the writers way of showing how different parenting styles yield different results. How they view the world, how different choices impact your kids, and you see that reflected in Rory and Lorelai’s interactions with those characters.

Honestly, I feel like April was very well written and came across as a normal girl with own interests and needs. I do agree I think most of the contention is from how she comes into the picture and how Luke/Lorelei handled it. I honestly think April handled the situation better than if Rory would have been put into the same situation just because how different their personalities are. April comes across much more extroverted and personable over Rory who is much more introverted. I actually likely April's character quite a bit and liked the growth she had over Rory's story arc.
For Rory's birthday party scene, I feel like the writers were trying to convey that Rory had an old soul that feels more comfortable hanging out with a group of an adults over kids their own age. I often felt this way when I was younger so I get it.

  • @radhiadeedou8286

The guests at Rory's birthday party wasnt a weird choice or a mistake, I think it was intentional and makes perfect sense. I don’t blame April anymore for L&L’s break up. Luke was a jerk to Lorelai for sure, but I also get that he just became a father for the first time and didn’t know what to do. April’s mom is the problem. It’s hard for me to watch the last seasons because of her. Saying that Luke isn’t a stable environment because he hasn’t been in April’s life when it’s literally her fault. She takes off for New Mexico without even considering Luke and April’s relationship. To meet your father after 12 years, build an actual bond with him, and then be ripped away only a year later.

I might be being too harsh idk, but I don’t and can’t see anything that treats April as a real character, I was halfway through the listing of “differences between Rory and April” and I stopped at “when April has a crush on a boy she tells Luke right away” and that’s exactly the issue with her, the same goes for her “being social and having friends and wanting to be at a social party”, she’s not a character, she is a plot device. Luke needs to get closer to his daughter right away for the sake of having this sloppy poor writing disguised as a plot twist run it’s course in the limited timeframe? Oh no problem April is just like that. Lorelai needs to fit into April’s life despite Luke not wanting her to? Oh what a coincidence, April wants a party and Luke has no idea what to do expect call lorelai for help. Oh we need that cause eve more of a rift between Luke and lorelai? Well luckily her mom has a major unreasonable issue with that. They are plot devices, that’s all they are. If they had been able to get a couple more seasons and not completely drop these characters I bet you countless character inconsistencies would pop up for both of them. I don’t think any “analysis” of her as a character is warranted or will ever be accurate bc as a plot device the only reason she exists in the story is to fit into what the story needs to be in the moment/episode/season. She has no arc and no real character traits bc she was written into the story as a real character, she was thrown into the story, like her mom, in order to break up Luke and lorelai to create drama.

April's a cutie! She's a completely innocent kid stuck in the crossfire of adults who grossly mishandled the situations given to them. Anna was nice until the weird personality shift suddenly made her completely anti-Luke (I blame the writers for not knowing what to do after ASP bowed out). Luke seriously dropped the ball communicating, and Lorelai wasn't much better. April's the victim here, honestly. It's a mix of bad writing and poor decision-making on the adults' behalves.

April wasn't really the ultimate factor of why Lorelai and Luke broke up. The signs were already there through the whole season - because Luke wasn't really ready to commit and April was just the last straw (and a convenient way for him to delay the wedding again and again...)
And I have to say, though I really dislike Anna and that she kept April away from Luke for so long, she DOES have a point. Luke wouldn't have been ready at all to be a father at a younger age because of the exact same reason. When push comes to shove, Luke always backs out at the last moment.
(Though it was still a messed up thing to keep his child from him).

I hated the plot and plot device and the writing in general after the show creator left and also how April is made out to be a version of Rory when she was younger, just like they brought in babies into 90's sitcoms when people got bored with the plot and the og kids got too old.
I don't dislike the person April, but what she stands for and that she brings out the worst in Luke and Lorelai.
I bet too, it would be very differently perceived by audiences, if April was a boy or dumb or lazy or if Anna was in a relationship or ugly. That felt lazy to me. How Luke is a Dad right away, but a bad partner as a result.
One more thing, talking about April being a child in this video, while showing sexy pictures of her grown actress is just weird.
