How An (Unintentional) Clothing Low Buy Is Improving My Wardrobe

- After a two year clothing no buy a few years ago, and the completion of my house purchase, I went into 2022 excited to finally buy some new clothing as so much of what I have is very old and no longer fits my body or my lifestyle.
But like most best laid plans, things haven't quite worked out as planned and I have ended up barely buying anything so far this year, sort of an unintended low buy or no buy. Whilst it's been somewhat frustrating only having the things that no longer really worked for me, things that don't fit and so on, there has been a silver lining or two and today I want to share those insights with you and how ironically, not buying anything is improving my wardrobe.

One other thing I wanted to share - I REALLY wanted to make my old clothes work, but forcing myself to wear them has made me realise just how unrealistic that is. A wardrobe full of bodycon dresses (which was understandable ten years ago when I lived for nights out with friends) doesn’t remotely make sense anymore. Holding onto them, and holding onto clothing that is too small, in some cases forcing myself to wear it is just ridiculous to be honest. I’ve come to the realisation that most of my clothing has to be let go of, not because of some weird desire to follow the latest trends, but because I’m not holding onto clothes, I’m holding on to a life I don’t live anymore. I don’t recommend doing what I have done over the past few years, refusing to buy anything and saying you will wear these things you once loved one day, when they fit, when you lose weight etc etc, it did nothing but make me feel bad about myself - but at least the no buy has taught me a few things and I won’t buy the things I bought so often in my twenties.
I completely agree - I also have a closet full of clothes and ‘nothing to wear’. I have so many low rise jeans and bodycon dresses. They still fit me - but I just don’t want to wear them. I recently came to the realization I’ll have to donate them or throw them all away and just let go.
@@adriv6246 It’s a tough one isn’t it? Whilst I do have a few things I hoped I would one day fit into, I have a lot that does fit but I don’t like it or it doesn’t suit the lifestyle I have now. I really hoped to make a lot of it work from a financial and I suppose sustainability aspect, but I’ve realised that I have to let go of a lot more than I initially thought. Not buying anything for the life I have now, just keeps me in a cycle of feeling unhappy and too uncomfortable in certain social situations.
I have a couple of really high quality pieces in my wardrobe that don't fit me anymore that I'm struggling to part with!
❤️❤️❤️
Over the past year I've gradually changed my clothes for the body and lifestyle I now have . Accepting that our bodies and lifestyle has changed as we age (I'm now 55 and perimenopausal) is not easy but I have thought carefully about what I'm replacing things with and my new items bring me joy when I dress and dressing each day is easier because they suit my current lifestyle/body. I'm also buying quality over quantity (particularly investing in my daily wear instead of occasion wear) and not feeling guilty about it. Enjoy your intentional new purchases when they come.
Thanks Pauline! Like you I’m thinking carefully about what I need and being intentional about what I bring in when I get to buying some new items in probably the next few weeks.
I have loved clothes for as long as I can ever remember, styling items in multiple different ways and so on - so keeping hold of things that no longer serve me in a way is also robbing me of that joy I’ve had since a very young girl.
I have so many beautiful dresses, particularly items for ‘going out’, and in a way it makes sense, they were bought at a point in my life where I lived for the weekend (and a truly fab time I had 😊), but whilst I had hoped to be able to style those things into something more daytime appropriate (I had visions of creating videos showing how I did it for inspiration) I realised that it’s just not going to work sadly.
My life is spent in a completely different way these days, and whilst I might partake from time to time, going out every weekend like I used to, well I don’t think I could think of anything worse 😂
Like you I’m focussing on the everyday items, something I’m really lacking at the moment. Thanks so much for watching!
Your videos are so inspiring. I've been doing a no buy for clothes. It has forced me to go into my wardrobe and see what I have and how I can make outfits out of what I have, which isn't a lot because I have done so much decluttering. I can relate so much to what you say about how this process has given me so much clarity about what I actually wear, not my fantasy self and then when I actually bring things in, it will be things that I love and will wear.
Our fantasy self can certainly make us buy things that end up not bringing value! As I’ve started to replace a few items, I’ve noticed how many things I’m drawn to, but I know I’ll never get enough wear out of them - thankfully I left them in the shop 😊
Always excited for your videos:) thank you so much! Very inspiring 👏 and also it was nice to watch videos like yours when you are trying to follow low-buy season.
Thanks so much for watching Anastasia! X
This channel is an absolute gem ! 💎 you're my low buy guru :)
Ahhh that’s so kind of you to say!
I love these little bed time tails ! You could talk about cement drying and make it sound interesting ! Love it !
I struggle with forcing myself to wear clothes I don’t like. I think it’s the mindset of, ‘well I bought this so I have to wear it’ that leads to guilt/ not purchasing new items. I effectively wear 15-20% of my tops (my jeans and pants are 80% or so) and I don’t have an extensive wardrobe. You’ve inspired me to purge my tops and replace some with new ones that I will (hopefully) like more! ❤
Hi Caitlin, whilst I’ve forced myself to wear some of my clothes, and I have seen some benefits in terms of learning what suits me and being realistic with what I will wear again, I don’t overly recommend it.
As you say there is sometimes a guilt attached. In my case, these clothes were bought at a time when my life was VERY different so that guilt is probably a bit misplaced and leads to simply feeling bad.
I’ve started really honing what I want to wear and will work for my current life - creating a shopping list almost and will stick to that once I start replacing items to avoid making mistakes again. Thanks so much for watching 😊
I have totally redone my wardrobe with items that make me feel good about myself and are comfortable…stylish….and of Good quality and lovely fabrics
That sounds lovely. I won’t be far behind you, I had hoped to make a lot of what I had work through styling as a lot of what I have is great quality and in beautiful condition, but the low buy this year amongst other things has shown me that sadly that’s just not going to work.
You are such a classy lady with an impeccable sense of fashion 😍
That’s very very kind of you to say, you might not say that if you saw old photos of my style faux pas 😉
Very inspiring and good vedio .👌👍🤝🌹
Thanks for watching!
not sure if outlets are in fact worth the money. Some say that the clothes/ bags are made lower quality for outlets and are not just cheaper same versions of a brand. I don't know if it's true, but is something to keep in mind
Some of the outlet stores carry lower quality lines that are produced directly for the outlet but in many it’s old stock that is surplus. In some of the branded and designer stores you know it’s last seasons style and not a made for the outlet style.
I wasn’t shopping for me really though, I accompanied someone else who wanted to go. I wasn’t really making a point about it being outlet stores, just that it was clothing that was ok, inexpensive but not something I truly wanted or needed. Sorry if that didn’t come across clearly.
Hi Kirsten, I absolutely love your videos and your channel! Did you remove your Christmas video? I was sharing it with everyone and now it says it has been removed. I am not able to share it. I would love it if you could re-post it. Thank you
Hi Susan a load of my videos got deleted by accident unfortunately. I’ll see if I can find the original but not sure I have it anymore
Kirsty I apologize for the misspelling of your name. The talk texting isn’t always the greatest thing.
@@susanschneiter6610 don’t worry 😊 I get Kristy a lot too as that’s more common in the states than in the U.K. I don’t take it to heart 🥰
I buy nearly all of my clothes from charity shops and car boots that way if don't like it after a while don't feel so guilty and either sell it on or donate.
That’s great if that works for you, i know many people now choose to only purchase second hand pretty much exclusively. I have found some second hand items that work for me but my experience with thrifted has been extremely hit and miss and has in some cases been a waste of money. Its not so much that I don’t like things after a while, most of my clothes were bought over a decade ago and I still like many of them, they just aren’t suitable for my life ten to fifteen years later on despite wishing I could keep them and make them work.
Lots of commonsense which I’d forgotten. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Rosa! X
