  • Episode 5 6-27-80 Part 3
    This is an original recording from WABC in New York for the $20,000 Pyramid during it's last week, from June 23 to June 27, 1980. Guest stars are Lois Nettleton and Bill Cullen. This is a very sentimental goodbye, but contains a very funny LAST winner's circle. There are no commercials in this episode (sniff).

    I remember watching this very episode when I was only 7 years old and on summer vacation after first grade. As such, I was very upset when they cancelled this version, but was happy when The $50,000 Pyramid appeared on TV months later in syndication. It wasn't until I was in 4th or 5th grade when I found out The (New) $25,000 Pyramid was on the air on CBS.

    Under Mike's direction, when someone won at the Pyramid, there were cuts to the various cameras at different angles. When the top prize was one, there would be a several cuts from the celebration in and around the Winner's Circle to the flashing amount at the top of the Pyramid and back to the contestant with family and/or friends, celebrities from different angles including wide shots. If the last game ended in a win in the Winner's Circle, the end of the show and credits occured there.

    Michael Strahan was probably mentored by Dick Clark to become the new host of the "Pyramid." Clark was the legendary host of the "Pyramid" and "American Bandstand", working 6 days a week on ABC. RIP Dick Clark and Bill Cullen.

    Some of you already know this, but the real joke behind the second gag category (Hit NBC shows" -- @ 0:34 ) was the fact that in the early 80s NBC was a distant third in the Nielsens.. Of course we can all thank Fred Silverman for that.

    He did return for the pilot and the first week of shows, but he did not like Los Angeles and did not feel the show would ever have the real excitement and explosive audience spontanaeity that the show had in New York. Under Bruce Burmester, gone were the wonderful quick cuts after Winner's Circle wins and the ending of shows in the Winner's Circle as well. Gargiulo occasionally retuned to L.A. to direct an occasional Bob Stewart pilot and early "That's My Line" shows for Goodson-Todman.

    The world has lost a true gentleman and a fabulous host. Nobody will ever be able to match what he could do, hosting, producing, anything he set his mind to do. Dick, it's not goodbye, it simply "so long".

    The director tried to get a close up of Bill Cullen during his comments about Dick but it just didn't happen. None of the four cameras were in a good position to do so.

    Under Bruce's direction in L.A., the shows always ended with the players and celebrities back at the desks and Dick Clark exiting the set. As one of the directors (with Paul Alter) of the original "The Price is Right," original director of "Password" and "To Tell the Truth" (all Bob Stewart shows for Goodson-Todman). Mike Gargioulo always kept an element of a family-type gathering and always capitalized on spontaneity where Bruce Burmester's work seemed rehearsed and offish in comparison.

    • @richardhernandez4490
      @richardhernandez4490 Год назад

      Dick in the 80s version exited the set around 95% of the time. Certain episodes of the 80s version ended at the Winner's Circle and him staying at the desks but those are hard to find.
      The Davidson version: John ALWAYS exits the set, and the background version turns red to blue, which was a nice touch at the end of the episode. There were some exceptions though: the end of the second and fourth tournaments: Kris McDermott and Melia Kline left with John Davidson.

    The music was changed...the opening and closing music was different. I wrote to CBS about the opening music and they never changed it. I cant beleive I wrote a letter about the theme music to CBS. thats how crazy i was addicted to the show back then.

      The CBS update to "Tuning Up" was, in my opinion, better than the original version, which aired on the ABC versions of Pyramid. The original sounds way too "60s-ish" for me.
