Adam Audio A7X and Sub8 - Sound Upgrade

  • I recently moved and have a new recording space. While I'm designing and building a new background, I decided I would go ahead and upgrade to proper studio monitors. And if you're wondering, YES I did purchase all of these items with my own money. Nothing was given to me, offered at a discount or offered in exchange for anything.
    It didn't take me long to decide on Adam Audio A7Xs and the Adam Audio Sub8 to go along with it because of the features, detail and clarity. Instead of floor stands I opted for the IsoAcoustics ISO-155 and IsoAcoustics ISO-200 to hold them at the right height next to my computer monitor. As a monitor controller, I went with the ESI MoCo Passive Studio Monitor Controller. Since my soldering kit is in storage, I decided to try the "World's Best Cables" star quad XLR cables made with Mogami cable and Neutrik connectors. There are links to all of these items below:

      @@SoundSpeeds You might find that the near proximity to your listening location and size of the room makes them less of a good match - my mixing room (approx 15x20ft) is filled by the A7X's, and I need a meter distance before I can get away from tonal weirdness. You might want to look into Adam's nearfield monitors or those teeny tiny Genelecs?

      I'm currently using the Gator Frameworks clamp-on stands and some foam isolation pads. needed to free up more desk space and my new desk to 1.25 in thick so it clamps on nice and strong. These ISO look like they would work really well though.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 года назад

      I considered the Gator Frameworks 2 years ago when I upgraded my studio before. I would have gotten them back then but knew it would mean moving my table off the wall a few inches and likely would have knocked the left one off my table considering how the space was laid out. Opted for the Pebbles to get by until I moved. I knew it would happen eventually and I'd be happy with the upgrade.
      One friend that has worked in a studio advised me against metal floor stands because he said they can rattle or do weird resonance. I went with the IsoAcoustics for a few reasons. 1) Bandrew recommended them and if he heard anything bad, he would have told me. 2) The metal pieces fit on both ends between rubber pieces. 3) Smaller pieces of metal resonate at higher frequencies and I doubt I'd ever hit a loud enough volume to have them resonate in that frequency range. Since getting them I have cranked the system wide open and it was loud AF yet still sounded great. The room shook and did the acoustics no favors but the stands were quiet.

      I had to test it before I could reply. When the sun is turned off, no audio passes thru. I leave my sub on all the time and only turn on the A7Xs when I need them. I also turn the cross over all the way down to 50Hz at volume level -60dB when I don't want to use the sub. That way full frequencies pass thru to the A7Xs.

    the A7X monitors are detailed but highs are quite harsh and ear fatiguing if you do all day work with it. I tested it but returned it in favor of a pair of Focal. Adam Audio is cool, but their heavy marketing with RUclipsrs make them look better than they really are. It's not like they are bad, they are good, but not better than the competition around the same price. It's just a matter of taste in the end and how do you use it. Also, one recommendation for speakers placement, the left one that is against the wall will not sound the same that the right one (because of the wall reflections).

      My treatment isn't in yet and it will treat the reflections from the hole in the corner I'm in. I have had no interaction with Adam Audio but I did contemplate many brands from the low end Presonus and Mackie to KRK and Genelec but decided on the Adam because I like them. It was then that I watched a few RUclips videos to see what they thought. I was impressed with any of the ones I saw though. Luckily I have friends, other pros, that own them and I trust their opinions too.

    • @aloneinthedev
      @aloneinthedev 2 года назад +1

      @@PyroKalfje As I mentioned, it's a matter of taste, I don't think the Kali deserve the hype except for the Kali in-8 second wave. Iso stands are great. I'm also very fond of desk clamp speaker stands for adjustability and freeing up space. All my HDDs reside in a draw with a hole in the bottom. Those not in use and cables in the draw above.
    Nicest thing I did in Lockdown was move the computer to another room. Building a more modern silent one would have been more sensible but definitely more expensive and the old one still works fine - firewire and the rme card will need prizing from my cold dead hands...
    For the odd bits of not too precious sound recording, I've currently got an old EV dynamic into a Mixpre d either line out or spdif which disappears off to the computer. Unbalanced Line out usually, but it's such a short cable run it doesn't matter and it can stay permanently connected without potentially screwing up clock settings.
