  • PHANTOM THREAD is available now on Digital, Blu-ray Disc and DVD.
    Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
    Written and Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville and Vicky Krieps. Music by Johnny Greenwood.

    the way he extended his leg over her’s, as they were just simply embracing in their love, speaks so much. the rush of awe that i felt in that scene was overflowing. i’ve felt their love through the screen and it was so strong. there was so much romance, chemistry, and tension in that film, and it was subtle but loud. such a beautiful masterpiece of a film.

    I adore all these scenes, especially the ones of Alma and Reynolds simply luxuriating in their love. I suppose they might not have helped further the plot had they been left in, but those shots of the two walking in the park and lounging on the boat take my breath away. Like the many deleted scenes from ‘The Master,’ I cherish seeing them as an extension of the film’s world even if they aren’t in the finished film.

      I'm torn. I love seeing them *now*. But I can't look at the movie and think it would somehow be improved by indulgent scenes of them lounging in each other's company. Its understatement seems so important to the vibe of the movie. I think the cuts were right overall.

    • @amigs13
      @amigs13 4 года назад +11

      Dylan O'Connell I think I agree. As pleasant and lovely as these scenes are, I don’t think the ultimate goal of the movie is to depict “easy” moments of affection. The finished movie is a more difficult, complex look at love on the whole, which makes the few moments of pure bliss we DO get all the more powerful. But I still love knowing that these moments “happened” in the world of the movie.

      @@amigs13 I'm torn. Because I do recall, on first viewing, feeling that the story went from the bliss of "will you marry me?" to Reynolds grimacing while Alma eats oatmeal a bit indecorously during their honeymoon, and I laughed because he was disenchanted so immediately, but looking back, I think the story benefits from a bit more of the swoon before the shadows appear. However -- nothing should ever interfere with that shot of them dancing at the New Year's Eve ball in the final montage. It's possibly my favorite shot in the film, and carries a LOT of weight only being seen in that final sequence. It so perfectly lands that, through their hard-won mutual understanding, he is finally able to enter life, the dance, with her, rather than tugging her roughly home by the arm as he did that night.

      James Walcott I see this as a great companion piece to Punch Drunk Love. Punch drunk was less of a love story, but it did have the beginnings of a love story. Now this film takes on what the relationship often is moving forward. Mark Kermode made an excellent point when he said that the film is much like a Disney movie of sorts, like Beauty and The Beast. Many dreamy elements, like the magical mushroom, and ghosts/curses. You ought to check out his review. I do think he goes a bit overboard with the analysis but it really does make you think about these things

      Hey man, I love this movie as well, but something that bothers me a lot with moviegoers nowadays is this need to say things like "the greatest movie..." or "the greatest actress...", I don't know. Cinema is such a personal thing, do you think titles like that really mean anything?

      Calling Phantom Thread a "romance film" rather diminishes it. It's a movie that goes beyond the romantic genre, it's far richer, even if it has elements of it. The "love" aspects of the story (arguably its main subject, nonetheless) are far more complex and perplexing than what is told in the vast majority of tales.

    • @GothicKin

      I prefer to not think about scores and ranks too much. If I start doubting "but what about this movie and that movie", I prefer to keep my judgement at the "no doubt" level...best one? Idk, top 10? no doubt
      Remember, post 60s we have Bridges of Madison County, Punch Drunk Love, Two Lovers and a whole bunch of movies that I have no idea whether they count as romance even...like does Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind count? Do Her and Ex Machina count? Does The Shape of Water count? Also is "After" so bad that it goes below 0 and loops around to 10?
      I mean there are many questions and few answers

      Do you not like it because you don’t understand it? The key is: she can only break his defenses by poisoning him. Only after experiencing how he can surrender and need her can he fully admit his own love.

      Perhaps it just doesn’t speak to you, which is totally valid. I found it very interesting simply because it’s so far outside conventional commercial fare. Love can be strange and contradictory. They’re both kind of scary people. If she over-poisons him he’s dead. So perhaps you’re reacting to what seems unrealistic. Yet there are many relationships that seem to make no logical sense yet people are together.

    I've always been confused by the line "...and my neck was skinny like a bird." What?
