  • To mark 20 years since the Redbird’s retirement and 60 years since the Bluebirds entered service, this train made up of both car types took a celebratory round-trip ride starting and ending at the historic Old South Ferry station. South ferry loop has since been closed to the public since 2017. The Train went up on the 4/5/6 line to the 2/5 line in the Bronx. The train will then turn around in the 239th Street Yard and Maintenance Shop for a special behind-the-scenes view before heading back downtown to Old South Ferry station.

    Nice vudeo. Those old cars can still move! I felt like a kid again with my nose on the front window going to visit my grandparents. Keep up the good work.

    This bears doing it in person! Great video. The New York City transit system is a fabulous entity that many people are not aware of. That yard holds a lot of trains and gets them ready for the rush hour every day!

    Yeah! This is a good thing to share this history with the young generation of today, and to see the old school trains we grew up on. ❤ the NYC old transit trains.

    One of the very few times you'll ever see a Lexington Ave. train switch to the outer loop at South Ferry. They used to do that a lot before that service pattern ended in 1977. South Ferry reminds me of a story my late aunt told me about. She was in the city back in 1959 and wanted to get off at the Battery. But every time the train reached the station, the doors wouldn't open. After several attempts, she finally asked a conductor about it and he told her she needed to be in one of the first five cars. She couldn't remember if the trains were Lo-Vs or R units.

    I didn't know the IRT red/bluebirds were that fast! I mean seriously. On some stretches of their express track run up to the Bronx, this train looked like it was doing every bit of 55 mph, if not 60 mph, or even a bit more. Pretty impressive!

    • @8avexp

      They appear to be moving fast because the video camera lens is set to a very wide angle. Conversely, if you were to zoom in, the train would appear to be going slower.

      You FELT them move too. I loved towards the end when they stopped maintaining the shock absorbers, and it felt like you were doing 80 between 125th and 86th, or between 72nd and Times Square on the West Side.

    Phenomenal video, but no WAY these cars haven't been modified, or whatever speed restrictions that were built into them disabled.
    I realize it's a wide angle lense, but I never remember the Redbirds, at least the ones that I rode in the 90s, being that fast. It can't be all perspective. That thing CHEWED up the track on the el runs.
    All express. Nice.

      When I was a teenager and later years the trains used to drive at high speeds , until there was a few crashes in a short time span, especially after the irt Lexington ave line 14 Street crash .
      The MTA reduced all the trains to a crawl , until a year ago or more, when lots of passengers were complaining that the subways are making them late to work, they put back the trains to higher speeds , now the trains are much faster.

      Probably not until next year. They don’t do Redbirds a lot now but you can go on the holiday train this December. It’s super fun and you would have a good time. Here is the holiday train information for this year www.nytransitmuseum.org/holidaynostalgiarides/

    How do you get from south ferry 1 train to bowling green? isnt it only possible to get there by going southbound onto the bowling green loop?

    • @BrooklynRailfanner
      @BrooklynRailfanner  6 месяцев назад +1

      A switch. There used to be a shuttle from the 5 to the 1 from south ferry to bowling green. Thats one of the main reasons there is a switch leading there
