I think a lot are confused with Dragdagulan because it stems from rural places in the Philippines. All our provinces have Fiestas, or celebrations held for the Catholic Saints or symbol of the province. These Fiesta always have events ranging from live bands, celebrity appearances, female pageants and gay pageants. Gay pageants started off as actual pageants which has evolved into “Miss Kalawakan” which means, it’s not a beauty pageant but a camp/comedy pageant. Then to “Miss Bardagulan” which has a section where it was a free for all Hunger Games type of spot where they can do anything and everything just to upstage all the other candidates. Some even resort to physically accosting the other contestants that is why there are strict security personnel who are on stand-by near the stage. As these are only done in remote areas, not a lot of Filipinos who are from urban areas or cities are aware of this sub-culture of pageantry.

    • @donpepito4647
      @donpepito4647 Год назад +11

To add, I think the Miss Bardagulan section of Gay Pageants was started to “save time”. Imagine, if you have 20 contestants, and all have to present their talents one by one, that will eat a lot of time from the event. Organizers just lumped them all together on stage and do whatever they want for a set amount of time. I know this is strange, but it is what it is.

At first I was also kinda confused of their choices for the national symbols. I thought it was gonna be the national flower, gem, animal, and so on. But then I realized that the challenge should be drag and camp so it's not meant to be taken literally. Anything that is culturally iconic both in good and bad ways is considered to be a national symbol. That's why we saw so many different and interesting choices from the queen. For example, Lady Gagita's runway is arguably the best in this category. Because she is supposed to be the useless "face shield" that the fascist government made us wear during the pandemic. It was scientifically proven not to help in containing the spread of the virus at all, and it's adding to the financial burden of the filipino people who are already struggling due to numerous lengthy lockdowns and lack of jobs. Face shield therefore is the national symbol that represents the failure of government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Lady Gagita's costume itself is kinda hastly made but it is nuanced, political, and funny.
Shewarma and Pura Luka Vega's approach were kinda literal but good. Shewarma served us the polished, campy drag that you'd typically see in drag race. Pura on the other hand served us a spooky drag.
As for NAIA, I think she is meant to represent the "tambays" or the jobless "bystanders" in the streets. These men always wear Basketball jerseys. If they are not busy playing basketball, or catcalling women, they would mockingly shout "wampipti" to gays who would pass by. "wampipti" is the slang for "150php" which is the amount in peso that poor gays would typically pay these tambays for a quick oral or anal sex. NAIA's idea of National costume for me is actually really funny, intelligent, and very referential. Sadly the execution wasn't drag enough.
Overall, I think the national symbols runways were good in terms of what they are trying to reference. It's only the execution that's lacking.
Hope this explanation helps! May you continue to react to this series!

I love that there is no elimination. Imagine being good in 9 of 10 challenges but you got eliminated in the first challenge which is the only one you are not good at.😅😅😅

For the National Symbols, hope this helps.
    1. Dogs - We have a local breed of dog called Aspin (Asong Pinoy). There lots of stray dogs here in our country and there are groups advocating to adopt these dogs instead of buying expensive breed dogs.
    2. Sampaguita - Our national flower. Barbie-Q opted to copy the rock icon with the same name. And the words you heard are lyrics to her band's song "Nosi Balasi" a play on "Sino ba sila?" or English, "Who are they?".
    3. Face Shield - During the pandemic, our country required face shield together with face mask if people want to go outside.
    4. Basketball - NAIA decided to do boy drag as a basketball player. Basketball plays a big part on our culture. Actually we have 3 B's - Basketball, Boxing, and Beauty Pageants.
    5. Talong - In English "Aubergine", as O-A mentioned, it's the second vegetable in "Bahay Kubo" - a popular children song. O-A also mentioned in her tweet that this is also an homage to her outfit on her first drag competition.
    6. Barong Tagalog - National Dress for men in the Philippines. Almost all dead man wears this during wake and interment.
    7. Carabao - our national animal.
    8. For Maria Cristina I hope that she mentioned that she represents the body of water that surrounds the Philippines where the pearls are found. Though she mentioned during the presentation that the people of the Philippines are the true Pearl of the Orient.

Hey girl. The Dragdagulan stems from our own version of voguing. It's basically a showdown where you can do anything to upstage your opponent. A lot of young gays in Manila do this - they do splits, dance, sing, rap, and even beat each other up just to win. I personally didn't like how it was executed in the show but I loved the concept. On RUclips there are several videos of Filipino gay fiesta showdowns. Here's a really good example: ruclips.net/video/qAyDDMjt9Bs/видео.html

The concept of the "dragdagulan" is to showcase the way Filipino Drag pageants are "buwis buhay" or in Filipino means life threatening/endangering. You would see queens diving on stage, doing flips, eating fire, walking on a wire etcetra just to win.

The audio on the pinoy national symbols is the "budots" a type of a music in the philippines usually popular in the provinces which comes with bass laden drums and electronic high pitch quick "whistles"..
National symbols are referred as things that remind Filipinos about the Philippines... like mundane things that bring back a recollection about an event or place..
Aries Night represent street pinoy strag dogs called Aspin (Asong Pinoy) that are infested with fleas and are abandoned in the streets of Manila.. not adopted and taken cared of
Naia represents the Pinoy bums who play online games and basketball (indirectly resembling unemployment or career shortage)
Pura Luka Vega emphasizes that most funeral attire of male corpses is the "barong tagalog", which is the national honorary costume for events
Lady Gagita wears the FACESHIELD that was part of the required COVID paraphernalia while go around the pandemic.. such item was associated with a criminal case of corruption during the pandemic where Pharmally (her name on this runway) was about.
Those are some of the symbols

6:23 the reason why the audio sucks is because it was supposed to mimic actual pageants commonly held in rural spaces --- which are usually held in small village auditoriums, or sometimes just a makeshift stage literally anywhere! I loved it because it really paid homage to gay pageantry in the streets.

Kinda to explain stuff, the first part for the Pinoy National Symbols is like a quick drag look that they do for around 50 minutes so they have a shorter time. Some of the queens did street and campy looks which are harder to appreciate for foreigners who don’t know the culture as much. But all the looks for the first challenge were fun and represente philippine culture really well.
The second look is the main challenge and they are given a lot more time to prepare and the second look maybe is the bigger chunk of the criteria.
For the dragdagulan part some other comments have explained it really well. It’s not the classic lipsync for your life that drag race does. It’s more street campy and trashy were you can dance, perform, read the queen so it can be whatever you want to do as long as you upstage your competitor.

    • @paulbartolome236
      @paulbartolome236 Год назад +3

To add also, Philippine pagents are very different from traditional pageants like Miss Universe. It’s a lot more chaotic and campy and fun. And people do crazy stuff during pageants. It’s really hard to explain without showing you how actual filipino pageants go. But Drag Den basically encapsulated the beauty that contestants bring, the fun and campy side of it, and how chaotic it can be.

Soo basically "Dragdagulan" is just a combination of the words "Drag" and "Bardagulan". Bardagulan means deferring opinions. It means fast and witty retorts since it originated in the streets. Since it is street slang, it can also simply mean "A fight".

Filipino drag is very VERY campy especially in the barangays or smaller villages. The dragdagulan is supposed to be a very campy showdown like in many "Miss Gay" pageants. Normally in these kinds of showdowns, it's a dance/performance battle like they showed in the episode (without the ball). The way drag den did it was kinda confusing to me though; like i don't get the ball and the commentary. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed being confused.

We’re all experiencing nuance of this show. There’s definitely room for ironing out and improvement. Reminds me of a quinceniera party with a piñata. Quincenieras and piñatas are part of Filipino bday tradition.

We don't do quinceañeras, the big birthday for girls is the 18th, where the dream is to have a debut (similar to a debutantes ball in the US).
Piñatas are more for little kids' parties.

@@coreycruz2542 it’s QUINCENNIERA! And how did that giant piñata look in that battle. It looked like a PIÑATA! Please it’s a fashion pageant show with a piñata battle. It is entertaining but that dangling giant piñata swinging without a purpose is not really funny. if anything, it could possibly cause injury, especially to the face. It really is a distraction; it prevents the battlers from performing and dance the house down. I’ll give it a 2nd season; but no more after that. Even with props “Drag is not a contact sport”🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍

We do have the same opinion. The first part is so confusing. It is not really showing any Philippine National Symbols. I also do not like the last part where they are using the wrecking ball thing. I find it boring.
I am watching your reactions since Philippines Drag Race. i love your transparency and your reaction itself. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
    Love love from the Philippines.
