mos def’s verse on “Thieves in the Night” gives me chills everytime
my favourite hip hop verse of all time
It still gets me every time your not alone my friend
best verse ever, such good social commentary. Pure poetry through and trough. Dude spits for more than 2 minutes.
My fav verse ever, decades later it’s still holds weight
We needa get Black on Both Sides eventually as well. One of the greatest albums of all time, with amazing lyricism and messages.
If he enjoyed it this much i think its definitely coming
New world water!

Word
Glad you finally reacted to this David Bowie album !
It's not I thought it was the david bowie album I got excited for a sec🤣
Both albums are incredidle tbf
Fun fact: Mos Def changed his name to Yasiin Bey in 2011. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Colbert asked if he could be Mos Def since he was retiring the name and Bey said he could. So...Stephen Colbert is Mos Def.
Your epiphany moment when you realized Drake could never even approach the level of Mighty Mos Def. All it took was three minutes!! You kept his eulogy short and sweet, loved the reaction Bob 👌🏼
😂
The irony is Mos Def is also much better as a rapper than Kendrick too.
Yes "Be" is by Common, absolutely phenomenal. Based on everything else you enjoy I think you'll really love the production on that album (done by kanye and J Dilla)
Also you've heard both mos def and kweli, and also common from Kanye's The College Dropout
I lovvvveeee the intro to Be. It's one of my favorite quick songs
@@jubabutler my friend linked me that song and it immediately convinced me to listen to the rest of the album. Very beautiful intro
@@kidabear782 there ain't a single ounce of skippage in this album bro
Important to understand the perspective of a Hip Hop head. These guys are True Hip Hop heads. They come from the culture of catching trains to go to the park and break dance (b boys), do graffiti, MC in cyphers in the park, Dj etc. They definitely come from the Public Enemy, Boogie Down Production lineage of MCs who make art because they love the culture, not for the fame. This album makes me proud to be a hip hopper and black man. Great job Bob.
Well said
Great write up 👍
@@bobthepoppop appreciate your channel dude 👍🏾
No joke definition is considered one of the best critically acclaimed hip hop songs of all time. Don’t hesitate to to put a ❤ next to it lol
Respiration is one of my all time favorite songs. As a New Yorker it captures the inner city’s essence PERFECTLY. I was 15 when I discovered the song and had to learn all of what the three MC’s we’re saying. Honestly I’ve learned so much about history and culture and vocabulary from hip hop. This I can see is your niche within the genre. (Compared to last week lol) which is perfectly fine bro, it’s mine too. Keep enjoying your quest with an open mind.
I'm finding myself really settling into this sound (Respiration). I love it. Clean, smooth, elegant.
Legendary album, top 10 hip hop album for me. Black on Both Sides is an absolute must Bob. Thats a top 3 hip hop album imo. I know you have a busy schedule, but hoping for that album in the next few months ;)
damn, i assume mos def is in your top 5 rappers
@@lucas.c6911 yea mos definitely he is
Definitely need mos def black on both sides I’m hoping it’s on his radar
The next great MC i hope is on the list at some point is Black Thought. Andre, DOOM, Mos, Thought, and Kendrick are my personal top 5.
@@goose0078 amazing top 5 doesn’t get much better
You MUST listen to the original version of Children's Story by Slick Rick. It makes the Black Star version seem even more incredible.
Slick Rick is an album I have listed for one of the 'way back' albums, so I imagine I'll hear that song eventually
In B Boys Will B Boys I think the reason the production is in the back of the mix is because it's not supposed to sound like a studio recording, more like a cypher or a dj set where the beats are coming out of speakers and mos and kweli are just freestyling live
Yeah it's definitely intentional
Ah, that makes sense
That Mos Def verse on ReDefinition is one of the best hiphop verses of all time
YES. Brown skin lady is one of my favorite songs of all time 😁
Loved that track when it came out.. Talibs flow on that 1st verse
“Your skins the inspiration for cocoa butter” lol that’s the first line that comes to mind when I think of that track
Great track, catchy tone, respectful... good shit 👍
This brings me back so much to my teens. This was one of the first hip-hop albums that really touched my soul and brought me into a different world.
Listening to it today, both the flows and the production remain smooth without being easy listening.
I appreciate the seriousness with which your taking the lyrics as well. The positivity is always there, but not always in ways you expect.
Also, yes, Mos Def's verse on Re: Definition is often considered one of his best as well as a classic in underground hip-hop. Hearing it again after a long time only makes me see more in it.
This so much! It was 2008 when I found this album and it certainly shaped how I listened to music after that. I think I was 13/14 years old and this was the most fire shit I had ever heard lol
You're so old
@@whitekj03 I was about 16, but it was around the same year. It's interesting to imagine someone seeing the same thing as someone at the same time you were but in a totally different place (I presume). Thanks for this reply. :)
Also, the Mos verse on "Thieves in the night" is one of the most important in hip hop history imo.
Respiration to me is one of the best songs of all time. Mos Def in the beginning seems to zoom out in the beginning like a hollywood movie, zoom in during the verse, and zoom out again at the very end. First time I've heard that. It's truly exceptional, and great reaction as well! I'm so glad you reviewed.
Great description :)
Hooray Bob! Smiling all the way through...
Wait untill you get to 'Black on both sides' and 'Reflection Eternal'
This was great, thank you for letting me enjoy this album through your experience once more... 🙏🏻
Rich nostalgia. Listened a 1,000 times in high school.
Didn’t carry it with me through adulthood, but this was a pleasure.
I see it as the culmination of a sequence of New York underground that starts with De La Souls first album, goes through Tribe to this. For a gritty, crazy counterpart, Company Flow.
Album is great, loved your comments on Theives in the Night especially. Here to recommend Below the Heavens by Blu & Exile. One of the best underground hip albums i've ever heard, its westcoast and very introspective. Beats are spectacular and Blu has a gift for writing songs. He was 22 when this came out and the underground went crazy. His rapping on this albums feels like he's a good friend talking to you about his life and struggles
Damn this literally has to happen !!
Seconding this
Hell yeah to Blu & Exile!
yesterday this album got a lot of upvotes in the reaction-suggestions discord channel. great album to react to.
amazing album I hope he reacts to this
Great choice, undisputed classic
Hey Bob I highly recommend listening to Mos Def’s full discography! If you have time I suggest listening to “The Ecstatic”, it’s been removed from streaming unfortunately so you’ll probably not be able to make a video on it :(, it’s probably my fav album oat, production from Madlib and J Dilla and some of Mos’ best lyricism 😁
The Auditorium
@@geegiff1337 my fav song of all time
That is a very special album.. I gave up on trying to understand the lyrical wizardry going on there
@@qoladipo5754 one of my favorite madlib beats
my favourite moment in this album is on astronomy during the verses and how they're constructed. they're defining who they are as the black star, delivered in the way of a spoken word duo. they chime into each others verses to the way spoken word duos either bounce back between each others lines or emphasize certain words. it's so unique and i don't see this used in new age rap, but it's such a cool aspect in the song.
Thieves of the night is one of the best songs in hip hop ever. Still relevant to this day.
"I'm gonna take a dig at Drake"
You are officially a hip-hop fan
You're not wrong - Kweli is known for his unorthodox flow. He has a tendency to deliberately overstuff his bars, which can push his flow past the margins so to speak, and it's a little bit of an acquired taste. Kweli has some notable projects early in his career, the Reflection Eternal record with Hi-Tek, and Quality, which is home to Kweli's biggest song "Get By" - produced by a young Kanye West.
There are some MC's that I think pull that off better than others. Talib Kweli pushes it, but I think he is still entirely aware of the beat. E-40 plays around with the delivery a lot too.
There are other rappers that just don't sound like they have rhythm or even care to stay on beat, like Blueface.
His newer stuff is a lot more conventional in terms of flow tbh.
This kind of chemistry between artist is rare in todays hiphop. Black Star one of my all time favorite duos.
B Boys will B Boys is essentially a shout-out to breakdancing. In the late 90s, just as mainstream hip hop grew more and more grotesque with its obsession with material wealth (leading into the "Bling" era), most of the independent/underground artists paid homage to the genre's roots. This is why you hear a lot of scratching and tons of references to 'Golden Age' era rap. Breakdancing is one element of that. So it is a filler, so to speak, but one very intentionally added in.
I was supposed to be studying for very important exam but I’ve been refreshing bob’s page all day so I watched this first. I’m so glad you enjoyed it and respiration is one of my all time favs as well. Listening with you gave me a new appreciation for something I thought I already appreciated a lot. And also inspired me to study even harder thinking about how Yasiin and Talib honed their skills so well to be able to produce something as amazing as this.
Thank you Bob, can’t wait for Lupe next week!
A ghetto bird is definitely a helicopter
You gotta do Mos Def - Black on Both Sides next. One of the best hiphop albums ever.
Such a phenomenal album. Respiration and Thieves in the Night are definitely the stand-outs but it's fantastic wall-to-wall. glad you like it
Thieves in the night is one of my all time favorite tracks. The production is great, the lyricism and tone is perfect, the message isn’t super hidden, but also not super obvious so the unconscious can still bump it and catch people with ears to hear.
Steve Smith is my favorite player of all time too! I was heartbroken when the Panthers let him go. I still remember his first touch as a professional. Opening day kickoff, he took it to the house. We won that game and then lost every game after that season! Hard to believe that was 23 years ago. It's a shame what the Panthers have become in the past few years.
That short track was focused and intentional. It was a callback to the origins of hip hop with breakbeats on loop in park with MC's doing their thing over it. It's a quick song that gives you a snapshot feeling of the time period they're shouting out in the song.
hey man I really enjoy watching your videos, i watch them all the time while i clean around the house or driving around. I appreciate the time you take to understand the perspective of the artist behind the song and do your best to be objective and not be biased
oh shit and youre into the whole gamestop thing too, youre the man
This album was my first love in hip hop
I know your list is long af but I hope you can do Black On Both Sides by Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey soon. Fantastic album front to back, I think I like it a little more than this one. That album proved to me that Yasiin is a top 10 rapper ever.
Common is soo firee, you have to Listen to his best album (imo) “Like Water For Chocolate”….majority of the production done by J Dilla (RIP) 🐐
Glad you’re reacting to this Bob. Talib Kweli is actually pronounced like Taw-lib Kwali
- On K.O.S., Vinia Mojica is singing the hook (she is actually singing the song that the sample comes from... it's the same sample used on Check The Rhime by A Tribe Called Quest). I remember when you did the A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory" album, well Vinia also sung the hook on "Verses From The Abstract" on that album
-a Ghetto Bird is a helicopter that flies around looking for people
Right on Bob for listening to this, I knew you'd vibe off the album, and we could tell right from the jump, that you enjoyed it.
Can't wait until you hear, "Train of Thought" and "Black on Both Sides"!
Keep doing what you're doing, and welcome to the realms of , "conscious rap"!
You gotta do Redman - “ Muddy waters “ classic and incredibly produced by Erick Sermon
CLASSIC! My top 10! Most Def now Yasiin Bey and Talib are definitely underrated!
Twists’s album “Adrenaline Rush” is a master class in fast rap. Twists is the king of fast rap periodt.
AR is such a sick album, would love to see a reaction to it
YB better
True🙌🏽
I also highly suggest the underground rapper Tonedeff. Imo he's at his best on a Kno beat and slowing it down a tid bit, but in terms of speed and lyricism, gotta give him a shot at the king.
Glad to see you do this! There's a seldom discussed underground CLASSIC by the name of Binary Star. They're from Pontiac, Michigan so I doubt many know them but bro... lyrics lyrics lyrics man, I think it'd be worthwhile if you don't care about the views (might not get a lot). Love the channel man keep it up!
100%
Bob when are you gonna react to The Forever Story by JID? Not only rap album of the year in 2022 but also top album of the entire year for music - seriously this one needs to happen soon
Holy shit. Yes. I've recommended this multiple times. Pure MC's.
Now I’m dying to see you hear Mos def’s verse on JID’s “Stars”
my favourite verse from that whole album!
You must do Black on Both Sides (Mos Def)
If you like talib kweli then check out him and hi tek (producer/rapper at times) as reflection eternal. A great listen
mos def is now known as yasiin bey! u mightve seen him on kids see ghosts by kanye or the forever story by JID!
talib kweli also has a pretty popular podcast now on youtube where he interviews a lot of other rappers and ppl in the entertainment industry
Really glad you enjoyed this album, used to bump this all the time as a teen. Thieves in the night takes its whole concept from a Toni Morrison book ’The Bluest eye’ which makes the song even doper.
If I can recommend any Common albums for you to react I’d start with Resurrection and then follow it up with Be. Resurrection is a classic and has a song that can be considered to be one of the best love letters to hiphop ’I used to love H.E.R’.
Be on the other hand has young Kanye production and it simply slaps. Great album!
Fantastic reaction, Bob. ❤️ you are literally the best.
14:55 What you said here is true for sure. Kweli definitely has a tendency to squeeze in a couple too many words haha. "Third-grade teacher readin' and talkin' about, 'I knew he'd amount to nothin'" for example.
This is one of my favorite albums Mos def is an amazing lyricist. He inspired me to get into writing lyrics myself. Talip Kweli has an amazing podcast called the people's party. Mos is in my top 5.
Hi, Bob... I need more reactions of Rap albums from the golden era of Hiphop. Cause, you did very a good job and I enjoyed so much... Please rock it over and over and don't stop
Oh shit, definitely finna sit through this......Great selection.......
One of my all time favourite albums
Mr. Walt of Da Beatminerz who produced Astronomy (8th Light) ties back to a line on another song you listened to: "What?" by A Tribe Called Quest on the Low End Theory from 1991. Q-Tip says "what's Music Factory without Mr. Walt" --- Mr Walt is a crate digger, beatmaker and used to work at the Queens NYC record store Music Factory.
A few years after that Q-Tip shoutout Da Beatminerz (Mr. Walt and Evil Dee) would go on to produce Black Moon's Enta Da Stage in 1993 and Smif N Wessuns Dah Shinin in 1995 --- both hip hop classics. Enta Da Stage came out a few weeks before 36 Chambers in 1993 and in the same vain helped influence the grimey boombap NYC sound with thick basslines, dusty samples, horns, hardcore lyrics, etc.
Enta Da Stage and Dah Shinin should be on your to listen list.
Facts. I requested Dah Shinin' on his Discord page.
"No Batman and Robin, Cant tell between the Cop and Robbers, they both partners, they all heartless, with no conscience". Amazing
Thanks for this -I'd bought this back in day and had forgotten just how good it is!
I am psyched for this!
mos def on re:definition is master class writing
Talib is amazing but, sometimes he doesn't make it look easy. 💯
for the record childrens story (Mos Def verse) is about puff and legend is he was a fan of the group and got to witness it live at the lyricist lounge back in the day. he didn't take it well.
Heavy album for sure my top favorite all time. Back then we didn’t have access to lyrics and annotations etc so you would discover something new with every listen and it felt great.
bob is so interesting. went from drake to black star like woah
Respiration is hip hop perfection from start to end.
Thank you for finally reviewing one of my favorite albums!
Great! Another Desperado Rapid video! Just in time thanks desperado
I didn't think I could listen for over an hour of a reaction, then I couldn't pull away. Very well done with this masterpiece.
Cant wait for you to get to Black on Both Sides by Mos Def!
Thieves in the Night will be forever my highest form of Hip Hop artistry in my eyes.
My wish is for it to be appreciated far in the future...
Black Thought is a must too!
Goddamn no lie I was just listening to Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele and thinking ‘man I can’t wait for Bob to react to this’… Black Star is a 10/10 album imo and can’t wait to see what you think about it! ❤
We need Supreme Clientele reaction as well
The grandson reference was because he makes movies and tv. He will be around forever.
About time 🙌🏼🔥🔥🔥
Great album. I am glad that you saw that some of the annotations on the website are incorrect, they confuse first time listeners.
So glad u liked the album
Black on both sides, reflection eternal, and the ecstatic reactions plsssssss!
Blu and exile below the heavens…. You will love it
Indeed. An excellent album.
You will love Like Water For Chocolate by Common if you listen to it
I love you for this Pop Pop
Great content here. Bob before you started your journey into hip hop i wonder if you would have thought rap music could have so much lyrical content its been really dope watching the journey
I'm excited to see this one. IMO this is a great album.
Hiphop has many styles Bob. Like most if us down south never grew up listening to this type of rap and vice versa.
Especially before the internet so there's way too many layers to wonder why a certain rapper raps different than another. But the beauty of hiphop is you have music for every occasion.
Yup. This here.
Bob may not have noticed but the name Slick Rick keeps popping up on tracks in several reviews. The universe is speaking Bob! Review The Great Adventures of Slick Rick!
Bob discussing Mos vs Drake aged really well 😄🙌🏾well done 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Man there's so much I want to say about this album that I just could never fit into a comment, and I leave too many long comments on this channel as is lol.
Love Andre, love OutKast, one of my favorite greatest hits collection, but you're right, their albums aren't precise, I always skip songs. This imho is one of the greatest albums hip hop offers. Two of rhyming's greatest rhymers at their prime keeping it short sweet and rocking it the whole way through.
Mos Def genuinely changed my life as a kid. Got me into jazz, music history, got me to take a deeper look into the civil rights movements, and the history of my own country and roots. He helped deepen my understanding of hip hop as a writer, a fan, and a product of it's environment.
Got to see Blackstar in person in the early 2010's. No sold out arena, couldn't even fill up the small art center where they performed in Miami. Best friend and I were literally the only teens there with a bunch of middle aged folk. Hip hop as a purest's art form is cruel.
Great opinions throughout the play-through. I'd be here all day if I went one by one, but glad you enjoyed, and I thought you did it justice. It's almost unfair to fit Drake in between Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common and Lupe next week. Sheesh.
Respiration is the closest I can get to picking a favorite song in Hip Hop's history. Many, many, many contenders though.
PS. If you want something contemporary, Blackstar 2 just came out last year. Haven't heard it just yet though so I can't vouch for it.
Dope comment, same thing happened with me after this album. It sparked a thirst for knowledge to a degree.
How was the concert?
@@MightyScruffy As an experience it was great. Mos was humping the speakers, we were just a few feet from the stage and the vibe was real chill. Past their "prime" but still think they deserved a bigger venue. One of the dudes we ended up kicking it with was an older hip hop loving white guy with jungle fever, looked a lot like Bob. Good times.
Shout out to Guts as well lol.
@@goose0078 damn...that sounds like a great experience. I've only seen Mos Def in Helsinki about 10 years ago, that concert was dope too, but it was the least "rap" rap concert I've been to 😄. Mos Def was dancing and jammin half the time, but the 'vibe' was on point.
And a person of culture I see, fellow struggler. 😅 #berserk
you might like de la soul - stakes is high is a good one to start
Moby Dick was the first piece of post modern literature, Melvilles reflections and knowledge of whaling in the second half of that book is extraordinary and poetic in its prose. Or maybe I’m just a nerd lol but I love Black Star, this albums a classic I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!
Should definitely review their debut solo projects: Mos Def's Black on Both Sides and Talib Kweli's Train of Thought
LITTLE BROTHER - THE LISTENING !!!!!!!!!
i havent seen it requested but you would love 1999 by joey badass. plus he was like 17 when he made it. so fucking good
This is maybe my favorite album of all time, if not at least top 5. Glad u did this one
Also, sometime Genius gets it wrong. Like in the case of Astronomy, the line is "thicker than black-strap molasses".
Yeah common - be and Mos Def - black on both sides are great albums that are similar
I know you don't really listen to the non album tracks but you absolutely have to listen to the "Respiration" Remix featuring Black Thought produced by Pete Rock.
Grew up on Kweli. Think one of the things about him, you trade the verbiage for perfect sounding flow. His ability to consistently rhyme multi syllable words within the same bar always just amazed me. Kinda take sophistication of bars in message and vocabulary over the exact flow with him. Not for everyone
