  • Fontana Lake is located in southwest North Carolina in the Appalachian Mountains. It’s the southern border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It’s also the deepest lake in the state of North Carolina, and it has lots of tributaries and little coves.
It was made from a dam that was used to produce electricity to build aircraft during World War 2. In doing so, it created submerged ghost towns like Proctor and Judson. It’s also a contributing factor to the Road to Nowhere which I have another video about.
The drive in is beautiful, as you can imagine. Mountains, rivers, scenic roadstops. Onyx and I ended up staying a bit over a week. We were just having so much fun exploring the hiking trails and nearby Fontana Village.
Overall, this was another great adventure in the Appalachian Mountains. Onyx and I really enjoyed our stay at the Cable Cove Campground nearby. Although next time I’ll bring a fishing pole.

    My Solar Setup:
This is my second setup I've installed in Vandalf the Grey. The more you travel, the more you figure out what your needs are. I've stuck with Renogy products both times, because I literally have had zero issues with them. They just work the first time. Every time. I am a Renogy affiliate, so if you use this link, you'll receive 10% off your purchase, and Onyx and I will get a bit of gas money. 73renogy.refr.c...

    - DCC30S 12V 30A Dual Input DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT (this was a game changer! MUCH faster charging than my previous charge controller + it charges the battery while driving, if necessary)
    bit.ly/3yFv7Gm
    - Deep Cycle Hybrid GEL Battery 12 Volt 200Ah (I AM sold on the advantages of lithium ion, HOWEVER, I don't feel the costs have quite reached the value yet.)

    - 700W 12V Pure Sine Wave Inverter (This is plenty for me. I use it for charging of devices, a fan, significant LEDs, and that's it. Go bigger if you're planning on a fridge, etc).

The damn started in 1942 and completed in 1944. Part of its power went to the Alcoa Aluminum company in Alcoa Tennessee but most of the power went to Oak Ridge Tennessee for the Manhattan Project.

The dam was built at the beginning of WW2 to provide power for Alcoa Aluminum but unknown at the time also for the nuclear project at Oak Ridge, TN. The sad side is that many many people , including me, lost a large part of their family history under the waters and also on the north shore of the lake as the government seized an additional 44,000 acres since the lake cut off access and put it in the Great Smoky Mountains Park. In most cases people were paid very little for their property and there was no recourse for them. It is a beautiful lake and park but came at a great price to those whose ancestors had lived there for generations

Yeah, I got that vibe as I traveled around there, learning about the towns like Proctor, and how the government still hasn't paid the full amounts for the properties. Thanks for the info! I could've used you as a guide!

Sometime in the late 60's some friends and I walked across the damn, and did a 22 miler up to Thunderhead Mountain, then the loop trail back down. Absolutely beautiful!

Fontana Lake is in Western North Carolina, not Southeast. Southeast would be down by the coast.

I own a house boat on the lake... side note, public at the time of construction it was used to generate power to build planes, but, years later it came out that they where also using it to generate power to build the first Atom bomb.

Wow! Was it for the Oak Ridge, TN complex of the Manhattan Project? I'm hoping to visit the Manhattan Project National Park in New Mexico this year. I love experiencing history.

@@deborahchesser7375 No, you're fine! It really is beautiful in the area. I took a month to explore the area, and the histories all overlap so much. I wish I would've been more into "vlogging" back then to document the adventures. Trying to make up for that on my new series of "Florida to PNW". 👍👍
