There was a huge fire in 2016 that almost burned Gatlinburg down. That’s where all the tree damage was done.
We spend a lot time in Smokys. Very blessed to have them thar mountains in our backyard.
Amazing that they have to put up an electric sign that says do not litter! I feel like the Indian guy standing on the Jersey beach with a tear in my eye!
Right, but that Indian guy wasn’t even an Indian he was Italian Lol.
@@taco472 yes I knew that. I guess I should've said the guy that they depicted as a Native American :-) I often forget what year it is. LOL
Once you crossed the top of the mountain and said North Carolina line must be close, you had just entered North Carolina.
Great ride Russ.
👍👍 Thanks! It was very relaxing. Beautiful green scenery, something you don't see much in Mohave Desert.
After spending the winter in the Southwest the rest of the country looks like big green Candyland.
Been through several years ago. A lot different than the mountains in the West! Cherokee is a neat little town. Not far from Cade’s Cove either.
State line is the top at Newfound Gap. Been there many times in my younger days, hiked many of the trails, now I can barely walk at all but I have the memories. Back then the sign proclaimed the park "An International Biosphere Preserve"
This is one of the most visited National Parks in the Country and one of the best managed. Im glad you came to our part of the country! Enjoy!!
We enjoyed Smokemont Campground in our 5th Wheel a few years ago. No hook-ups but we did have a generator which is OK in late morning and through about 7:00pm. There are good restrooms and a sink for doing the dishes at the restroom outside. On the river. The visitors center near Cherokee is very nice and a lot less crowded than the Sugarlands one near Gatlinburg. Cherokee has a tourist feel but not too terrible. There also was a demo farm worth seeing and a herd of Elk!
Great video. In 2016 there was a massive wild fire that ravaged through Gatlinburg, killing 14 people, and destroying approximately 2500 buildings, causing an estimated 2 billion dollars in damages. Look up the story on it some time, its truly heart breaking. The fire was started by two teenage boys in the park, and spread to the town and surrounding area a big wind storm. The fire burned for 3 days and they expected it to burn itself out but suddenly the winds picked up and started blowing in access of 85-100mph. I love camping at cade's cove and love that whole area. I drive down from Canada once or twice a year to visit, even just for a few days, it's my happy place.
So like here where I live in Wales in the UK, Only difference is the road surface is a thousand times better your side of the pond. Great vid Russ.
HOW BEAUTIFUL ❗👍 How could you ever go back to Quartzsite 😊
In NC, you have to visit the outer banks!! It is a perfect time of year to be there!! So much history. The Wright brothers worked on their plane there. The beaches are amazing, and there are 5 light houses throughout the sound. You can actually go to everyone of them before the days end. Lost to see! Last time I was there I stayed at Kill Devil Hills. The beaches oh My!!
"leave no traced beyond your footprints"
a good mantra
@@jerrygundrum1 I'm a "leave no trace" kid..I'll take my chances.
Trying to imagine the root system of all those native species of trees ...as deep as the height? How incredible Mother Nature is!
Thank you for allowing me to go along with you and do what I can no longer do myself. My old legs just don't allow me that much walking.
You are so welcome!
Gat-lin-burg is absolutely gorgeous. TN in general is beautiful. I’m a Tarheel originally from NC. You will see the same beauty there, as well. Thanks for a great video, Russ! ♥️❣️🙏🏼❣️♥️
Was looking for this. Thank you for pointing out the correct pronunciation for GatLinburg.
I was born in Elkin, NC and spent many summers in the Smokies as I grew up in KY. We're both Tarheels.
@@karenwoodward7291 - yes!!!
I wish my dad was still around. He used to take me to go see the national parks around the Appalachian Mountains every chance he got when I was a kid. I'm 22 now and can't wait to go out and do it all again.
Thanks for the ride Russ!
I went this December for a week hiking trip. I loved it, although you definitely have more greenery to see.
You know you might have mentioned that the Great Smoky mountain is the most visited national park in the United States and yes there was a fire you might want to check that out 3 years ago in November and yes we have beautiful tunnels and if you will notice through your video there's a ledge they had to make them taller for RVs so they lowered the tunnel instead of raising it there's so much information that these people need to know about the Great Smoky mountains I'm glad you enjoyed your trip through it I do it about once a month because I live here and it is beautiful
Beautiful area!! That last zoom looking down the valley with the clouds...awesome!!!😊
We used to camp in the Smokies, as we called them, when I was growing up in KY. I was born in ELkin, NC and we moved to KY when I was 3. I've now been in Jackson, MS since 1978 and haven't been back to the Smokies, I miss it. Disabilities keeps me in. The fire that swept through Gatlinburg area several years ago nearly wiped it out. Dolly Parton did fund raisers to help people whos houses burned. Thats what you're seeing in new growth.
Folks forget that this area was settled by the Indians before the government came in, and President Andrew Jackson in 1830 signed the Indian Removal Act and forced the Native Americans into 20 long years of continual removal along the Trail of Tears in to Oklahoma. My ancestors were happy here with their beautiful settlements but had it taken away from them because the government wanted it also! Every time I visit the Smoky Mountains I’m reminded of what took place long ago!
Wow wow,I never no America have so much hills rivers mountain trees , greenry,,wow just beautiful,
LOVE The Smokies and camping in Cades Cove and hiking to see the waterfalls and cascades...
As a desert loving lady I’m always in awe of the green forests/ mountains in other states. Just beautiful!
Amazing park.
This was my late husband's most favorite place. After the first time he went here is seem to end up being our vacation get away every year. When you topped the Mountain you crossed over into North Carolina. Thanks for this adventure.
So pretty! Enjoy your travels!
Love hearing the birdsong! Thats something you dont hear in the desert either!!!
Simply beautiful.
This was a very relaxing ride through the Great Smoky Mountains! Our local gas station has signs up limiting gas @ $5.00 now It wasn't like that Thursday in Sparta or in Independence Friday. You will love the Blue Ridge Parkway. Right outside of Sparta, the section of the parkway called Doughton Park, has a old wooden house that sits way down at the bottom of the hill. People can walk to it & see it. The Doughton family lived there had 16(? I think that's right) children. The story board tells how they lived. So much history & beautiful views. Never ending stories of the past. Grandfather's Mountain in Boone, N.C. You can mine for Fairy Stones near Mabry Mills (Virginia). So glad you are here in the East.
Wow, absolutely beautiful! Putting this on my list of things to see. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from central Florida.
Beautiful and tranquil
Was really beautiful back in the 60's ;)
Looking forward to when we can RV into the Smokies. Beautiful lush greenery; loved sounds of water rushing & all the birds chirping. Imagine the pioneers slogging & slashing their way thru the bushes, etc.
Thankyou Russ ,Its gorgeous thru there 🐦
Great video for me to start following you again. I like the Smokies, when I go through & be around, when visiting my Grandma & 2 Aunts, in Asheville, N.C. I am 72, & my macula degeneration, doesn't let me drive anymore, so I am very grateful for your, well put together vides.
Daniel Boone Country ! Thanks for this nice video. Sound of flowing water is impressive. Most of Eastern America is forested and densely populated. That's why, living in the East, I find Western America more "exotic".
You Never Disappoint us. Fantastic :)
We visit yearly, we rent a five bedroom cabin for the whole family. We live about 3.5 hours away from the great smoky mountains. We love the mountains. Thanks for sharing.
If you can catch the blue ridge mountains at day break, it is breath taking. Love Tennessee!! I was born there.. I can wait to go back!! This fall for sure!! That is when I start my RV life!! So excited!!
When my kids were little I drove from Norfolk Va to Oklahoma...the song hwy 40 blues was a hit song. .when I see that road..all I can think of..those hwy 40 blues lol
Thanks, riding along. So Beautiful place. Beautiful...Nizhoniful...Nizhoni fully...
Thank you for your relaxing road trips
Another great Ride with Russ...YEA!!!
In the west the states are BIG and we have a lot of wide open space. Not used to so many people. I'm guessing all those parked cars were for the Appalachian Trail.
So happy to have come back to watch this video. One of my favorites this year. 💚
My family and I love the smokies. My daughter's wedding was on Cades Cove. Absolutely awesome camping all over the area.
love the smokies, love tennesee
I really enjoy the birds singing in your introductions. You plan that perfect.
That's a lot of green around you. Its beautiful.
Hasn`t changed much since the 1970`s. Great video, thanks Russ.
missed Mingus Mill..all kinds of very easy hiking trails, falls, streams thru there,,you barely scratched the surface..nice vid!!
If you want a smaller less built up area come check out cuyahoga valley national park they're not mountains more like small hills and little cities that surround big cities this is where the indians were every city has parks and we got rivers and the lake gives us weird nice weather the rain always passes over until the winter
Was in Pigeon Forge last week. It really is a busy place, to busy for my liking. We used to bring our kids back late 80s early 90s. I don't remember it being as busy. I know they 've added a lot of things since then. I myself would rather stay in the Cheerokee s. It more laid back. I like it better since I've got older. I sure love the Smokey Mountains though. I've got a lot of memories being there. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
My home state, TN, enjoy!
Great video Russ, excellent camera and editing job. A few years ago my company was hired to do all the video work for a documentary about this area, it's about a 40 minute documentary and it's on RUclips, the RUclips channel is Free High Quality Documentaries and the film is called " Great Smoky Mountains - Staggering Biodiversity in America's most visited National Park". It was a real pleasure to work on this project, the end product turned out wonderful....
I'm so enjoying watching this
This is my backyard too! Love your videos Russ!@!
Nicely done video thanks 😊👍🙏
Great scenic ride love the views of Smoky Mountains to NC
Hey I'm in cherokee. If you are boondocking go to conley creek road in Whittier. all the way up and camp for 14 day's. This road will also take u to Franklin N. C. Were u can camp at shooting creek
You don't see this in the desert for sure, good quote Russ, great video.
Beautiful!!
when you was heading east did you stop and see mammoth cave national park and Daniel Boone national forest in Kentucky and Cumberland falls if you didnt get the chance try to get through there on your way back west you wont be sorry you went right by one of the most beautiful places in the mid west and Lincolns birth place all in the same area the mammoth caves are beyond what words can describe
Looks so relaxing
Have fun there I have been there a few times. It's so nice love it.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. Brings back lots of fond memories. Be safe!
Saw a bear there last year and Elk in Cherokee. one of my favorite roads and places to visit. Have a broke foot and going thru your videos have saved me! I'm usually on the road thru the summer...oh well--next year! Thanks for the virtual travels!
Absolutely Beautiful ! Thanks Russ ! Stay Happy and Safe !
Wow. Such a beautiful place and awesome video. Thanks Russ 🚐
My family and I was at that very spot the over look he just left. We were there Oct 2021. Beautiful state.
so breathtaking! thank you so much for this.
Been there several times....have fun and enjoy the trip!
This is like my neighborhood. Beautiful my friend
Gorgeous park!!!! Safe travels!!!
Great video Russ! I could watch Cataract Falls for hours!
Fantastic area. It does look like blue smoke.
"gattenburg" makes me 😂 every time
Russ, checkout the Blue Ridge Parkway, it’s close to HWY 74, very scenic drive (if my memory serves me right).
Excellent video!
Beautiful area, thank you for taking me🙂 I'm from Nevada, I'm not used to all the green and rain either..trees almost made me dizzy when you were driving..I loved it..❤️
The last place you passed in your video was another visitors center. It's on the Left before you get into Cherokee. They have alot of elk there. It's really nice.
At the 28.10 minute mark. Note the great cloud scenery. When he zooms in, you can see some sort of 'blue haze' zone beneath the clouds.
I’m in Gatlinburg right now and I guess it is pretty crowded what is something I guess you should see once in your life tomorrow Maryland and the New York West Point
Look at all the greenery. I haven't seen green like that since I left MI for AZ almost 40 years ago!
Enjoy the trip sir👍👍👍
Hey Russ!!! Say "HI" To "SMOKY THE BEAR"!!! Be Safe!!!
Great video thank you
Viewing for first time on 12/15/2021. My niece is a ranger in the Smokies and lives in the area of TN close to NC.

As a teenager in the very early 70’s we got jobs cleaning out falling branches, etc in NC Mountains. All my friends got jobs and it was so much fun working together outside. We loved making a difference to these beautiful mountains. I think that’s why NC never had major fires to burn many acres. I wonder if those jobs are available today. I don’t think teenagers are very interested working like this now a days.
Love your videos!!!
That was beautiful Russ! Thank you. Tennessee is gorgeous. Love seeing the green. I've been in Arizona too long.
Very nice
We were there in 2019 (pre-Covid). So I guess we were part of the 12,500,000 visitors.
You went to the Smokys at the right time for the weather.
We did a Rv trip there in May of 2009. It’s been a while. Gotta get back.
Do some hiking
Great voice snd laugh! Inviting.
Russ, it maybe too late but there is a nice camp ground in Gadsden Alabama, it's next to water Falls as well.
