- Near Dullstroom, Mpumalanga there’s a valley that bears the traces of different peoples who have lived, farmed, and fought there for centuries. Bokone means north in the Sotho languages including SeTswana. Bakone means people of the north and they’re part of the BaPedi nation. To this day they still use Mokone as a greeting; which is the singular form of Bakone. I’m loving the stories and thank you.

Bakone are still around. They part of bapedi in Limpopo-mpumalanga border. Others are part of vhavenda(goni people) and they're also in the north west of polokwane under chief Matlala.
I do understand that there are modern people who use this name. From what I've read, their links to the more ancient people are not 100% clear. But, you seem to have much more detail that I was able to access.

Oh Al, what a good piece of work once again! Most of it I have never of, but the Bokoni people I have. I have done a video called "Is this Africa’s “Stonehenge” or is it just an abandoned cattle pen?" where in some other ruines are of the Bokoni are featured. I will add a paragraph from the video, which of course you may delete. Keep up the excellent work!
Although the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted that the Bokoni people settled here since the 16th century. The Bokoni were pursued by the Mfecane, and that's why the structures the Bokoni built look like a collection of interconnected forts. The Mfecane eventually drove the Bokoni away from here in the 1830s.

Such a beautiful place. We live in such a beautiful, picturesque country. I hope that neighbour faced the consequences. Scorched Earth was so cruel. Am I right when making the assumption that they would then often take the woman and children to concentration camps too?
Yes I think you might be right that they took them to concentration camps. I am sure Al can give you more deets. (Maybe he should do an episode on that)

Thank you. Yes, women, children and the non-combatant elderly were taken to the concentration camps. It is such a sad and bleak episode in our history and there were so many more camps than I first realised that I don't think I could do justice to the subject. But I know that we will have to touch on it again as it is relevant to other stories that I hope to tell.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, so apologies if I have but a while back I was watching a documentary about the Duchy of Cornwell from when King Charles was still Prince Charles and he showed off tins that were chocolate and sweet containers, from companies such as Cadbury, sent to the British officers stationed in South Africa at the time to boost their morale and I've since just had this very sad image of these officers eating their treats on one side of those concentration camp fences while young children of all races in those camps were looking on and dying themselves of starvation. Such a sad, sad time in our history.
Ouch! Yes, that is a very sad image. I don't think most of them were monsters, but war is a harsh business.
The paragraph you read explained clearly to me the cause of the very deep anger and anti British sentiment my Ouma often expressed. As a young child she endured the crushing hardship and heartbreak of being interred in one of those concentration camps
Yes, the more I have read, I have also begun to feel the magnitude of the suffering. Very sad. Thanks for your adding a bit of your family history.

We had a farm that's two farms away from where you are on the otherside of rainbow valley we also had outposts on the farm my dad passed away and my mother sold the farm miss it so much
I can imagine. It's a beautiful part of the country.
It's has the best summer but the coldest winter some days it gets very misty so thick that you can't see your neighbors house and can last for up to three days. The thunder storms that roll into the valley are out of this world to watch 😊
