Tommy Cooper - two bits - HQ

  • Here are two pieces of business from The Maestro of Magical Mirth. My favourite Tommy Cooper story concerns his habit of carrying a pocket full of tea-bags. Not for drinking, but rather for pressing into the palms of those who opened doors for him - along with a murmered, "'Ere you are - 'ave a drink on me."
He wasn't mean - he just loved to make people laugh. And as the doorman would open his hand, expecting to see a folded pound note, when he saw the tea-bag, 99 times out of 100, he would burst out laughing. Tommy LIVED for that. And of course, the tea-bag was worth INFINITELY more than a pound. The doorman would have a story he could tell EVERYBODY - and a memory beyond price.

People used to love watching Tommy Cooper for the hilarious, timeless comedy, often completely overlooking the BEAUTY of his magic tricks. The way he would fumble and mess up even the most simple of illusions and then "accidentally" make something work. Sublimely clever - he really was a Master of his Craft.

The hoop trick, the thing is if you pay attention, when they hit the deck they did "fall apart in front of your eyes" as you can see one rolling.

it takes a master to get the trick supposedly wrong and entertain the audience and at other times throw in a sudden twist to the trick at the end. No outlandish gimmicks and dim lights but a good front of curtain stand-up routine. He must have had something for he was enjoyed by millions for decades

the first trick shows everything that was great about the man. milking it for every laugh he could find. all he's doing is ripping up bits of crepe paper ffs! and, then, at the end, he brings the house down simply by getting it right...
genius - not just of comedy but of ALL aspects of front-of-curtain performance. the timing, the looks, the interaction with the audience, the looks into the wings... everything about him was special. there will never be another!

TC was a one-off. Nobody before or since has matched his comic timing.
At the peak of his powers, no comic could touch him. Even when he had
that tragic fatal heart attack onstage in 1984, he made it look like a comedy skit.
My favourite TC joke - "I went to see the doctor the other day. He said
lie on the couch, I want to sweep up!"
Tommy Cooper was a true immortal.

  • @davidwrightatloppers

@markhorneyuk - Yes. There was a woman who kept laughing louder and out of time with the audience.
In the business, it's a worse problem than HECKLERS - at least you can put them DOWN. But if you put down someone whose laughs are GENUINELY just out of sync with the main audience - said audience will think you cruel.
So you just have to try and RIDE it - as Tommy did!
