Coyolillo’s Carnival Is a Celebration of Afro-Mexican Culture | Atlas Obscura

- Once a year, the people of Coyolillo, adorned in intricate masks and vibrant flower crowns, flood the streets to celebrate their Afro-Mexican heritage. They have been historically discriminated against in Mexico, and were recently acknowledged in the nation’s census. However, for Carnival, people young and old disguise themselves in traditional masks to show pride in their roots.

As a Mexican this makes me smile. Be proud of who you are as well as your ancestors. Being black is nothing to be ashamed of. Black is beautiful.
That’s because Mexico is Are the Indians from the tribe of Israel (Issachar) the original complexion is of the dark culture. Genesis 49 vs 14,15.
@bavmo7 Qam Yasharala Yeah. The so-called Aztecs and Mayans were Israelites
@@str8tuptlk The so-called Afro-Mexicans are the true descended from Aztecs and Mayans
✨I’m 3yrs late but this is BEAUTIFUL✨🙏🏾✨🧚🏾✨💫
Near the so-called Cerro Congo, in the municipality of Actopan, in the state of Veracruz, is Coyolillo, a congregation of the "Afro-Mexican race", as they call themselves. Founded in the seventeenth century, it is located about 40 kilometers from Xalapa, the capital.
Its first inhabitants were slaves who obtained their freedom and who worked in a mill called Nuestra Señora del Rosario, on the Almolonga farm.
Its carnival is unique in the entire state.
They dance with wooden masks representing animals, wearing capes, multi-colored headdresses and rustic bells.
The original dances are known to be long gone, but the "disguised" ones resemble a party called Gule Guamkulu from Mozambique, Mali, and Zambia.
Greetings from Minatitlán, Veracruz.
We recognize you our brothas and sistas!! black american showing love!!!
We Are one African family!☺✊🌍💜
That’s the thing, most of them don’t want to be accepted by you or me. They want the acceptance from the yt man. Just like American and African blacks.
Thank you... I too am from a community with African roots in Mexico. Except we are so well blended. Most people don’t know of African descendants in Zihuatanejo. Hyphens are a US thing. We use Negro/a or Moreno/a as terms of endearment (in my extended family).
That's amazing . Me gusta
Como me sorprende ver que tanto en la cultura Afro- Mexicana existes estas máscara que se usan en los carnavales al igual que las hay en la cultura Afro- caribeña.
Felicidades a mis hermanos Afro- Mexicanos.
Man we are indeed a beautiful people...Don't let anyone tell you different....Much love from the UK
Is great to know you roots I am afromexican born in the United states of America
So you're an american. Mexican is a nationality, not a race.
Mhmm same here , I have Spanish n Afro Mexican ( black) genes! Mano, viva la Raza
Incredibly unique and unsullied with commercialism. Wow. My first thought was I wanted to experience this culture but then I realized that I would be part of the problem that is erasing that which makes our world wonderful. Thanks so much for finding and sharing this Atlas! I’ve been following you guys for years and it’s just the best content always.
What do you mean by experiencing this culture and how would that be part of the problem?
Reg Fife I’d like to visit but I’d be a tourist. Commercialism in my opinion changes cultures, especially one so isolated, in negative ways.
I think _some_ commercialism is fine, as long as it is initiated and controlled by the people who are part of the culture, and it is respectful of that culture. As long as we live in a capitalist society anyway. For some cultures, that form of self-directed marketing and commercialism is the lifeline that allows the culture to survive.
If you don't post what a great time you had online, then people likely won't go :)
@@Mentocthemindtaker Well said

Just amazing. Love this ❤️
Yo no soy "afro-mexicana" pero si tango ADN Africana. Casi todos los Mexicanos tenemos antepasados africanos. Pero no a todos se nos ve por tanta mezcla.
Meanwhile the people of the Dominican replublic whose people have more African blood than these people are denying there Afro heritage.

This is very important for so little is know about the Afro- Mexican community which represents 2% of the Mexican population. How wonder that they have a good sense of identity
1. 2% it includes immigrants from Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, Honduras and Africa. A great number seeking and awaiting Asylum to the US
@@teresaguerrasalazar that's re-sent , Slaves ran to Mexico in slave times , and mexico took them in and protected them from the Americans

They look like regular mexicans
Mhmm but they are black and dark skinned Afro latin people
Yeah but most Mexican African DNA and embracing their heritage!!!! I don't think you get the point of the message we all are one race so people need to stop being racist!!
Variant degrees of African DNA in La raza. Some from the Moors. I have both subsaharan and North African.
Afro Mexicano Tambien son Afro Americanos porque Mexico Esta localizado en America.
En estados unidos son Afro estadounidenses.
Estados Unidos y America son cosas distintas.
Mexico es America !
These are descendants of Hebrew/Shemetic peoples of the diaspora, and they wear their heritage with dignity and class. Congo and most of southwestern Sudan (So-udan, or Land of Yahudah) was and is the land of the exiled and dispersed of the ancient so called Israelites (Yah'sharalim). Perhaps the next step in the wonderful revitalization of your culture is to search out your Hebrew roots!
Shalom
Chill they came to Mexico running slavery from America . Mexico took them in and didn't give them back to the Americans.
😂
We don't see the African culture or African heritage in their identity today.
They close to Ameridian culture identity
