  • There are many items of clothing that announce to the world that their wearer is now a woman. For some people, it's the bra, for others, it's their first shoe with a heel. For many Indian women, that garment is the sari, an expansive length of cloth that takes skill and know-how to wear correctly. Girls learn to execute this multi-step process from their mothers, and "come out" for the first time in their own sari during Ritu Kala Samskara, a ceremony that marks a girl's transition into womanhood.
But, this journey isn't just for girls. For India's third gender, the hijra, that process of transformation is a much more complicated and fraught one to make. The label of "hijra" pertains to a diverse range of people who consider themselves outside of the cis categorization of male or female, but largely describes those born male who transition to female through a combination of gender affirmation surgery, taking on India's traditional feminine gender roles, and wearing women's clothing.
Though hijras were officially recognized by the Supreme Court in India in April of this year, which mandated their representation within government institutions, the idea of a "third gender" is not new there. Its origins go back thousands of years, and they have held cultural, political, and spiritual importance throughout history. But, like many in the global trans* community, they face incredible prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Even with their new legal recognition, hijras are still marginalized in a country where impoverished women do not have the same rights as their male counterparts. Since reliable doctors for sexual affirmation surgery are expensive and hard to find, many poor hijras seek out less-safe options. So, making the decision to transform at the risk of their own safety, civil rights, and personal health requires an incredible sense of identity. To hijra people, saris are a badge of honor, a symbol of self, and an armor against the world; it is their right.
With our host Asha Leo, we traveled to Coimbatore, India, to meet with a brave group of hijras in this episode of Style Out There. Watch as we explore their world and perspective, and how powerful a single piece of clothing can be.

The worth and dignity of a soul is measured by what it delights in! And delight/happiness is our highest desire.
Men have killed to have it. Kings have gone mad trying to find it. Wars have served it. Affairs have worshiped it. We all seek it.
Sadly, billions have died without discovering its secret... namely, that joy is not an it, but a He.
The Gospel is the good news that sinners can delight in a Holy God. It's the good news that all of our deepest desires are satisfied in the ONE who sent His Son to bring us to Him. .
God is so valuable and so satisfying that the most loving thing he could do for us is to make Himself gloriously indispensable. He is the only being in the universe for whom self-exaltation is the highest virtue.
Therefore, God's commitment to be glorified and our goal to be satisfied are not at odds but come to simultaneous consumation in the worship of His Son... who took upon Himself the Wrath that God had towards us in our sinful disregard of Him. A wrath that could never be appeased through man-made religion.
Jesus didn't die to turn the world into a paradise, he died so that we could stop seeking paradise in the world...
Temporal things such as beauty, popularity, money, sex, racial identity, gender reassignment... can never truly satisfy. BECAUSE WE WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE!
We were made to gaze intently into the Eternal Beauty of a majestic King, Father, and God... meet Jesus the Christ.
Life is hard, God is good, Glory is coming
😊... Thanks for taking the time to read this comment.
May God bless you with all things necessary for life and goodness.
      God Bless!

As a tamilian Hindu , I've visited MANY temples. And 90% of them have trans women begging outside of the temple. I've always wondered why they beg instead of getting a job and starting a life in their OWN homes with their families. But as I grew , I realized how the society mocked them for having a different sexual identity (transphobic ppl). They use adjectives like "adhu" which translates to "this/that/it". Our society doesn't really treat the Trans community like they should be. I also learned that they're kicked out of their homes for coming out as Trans. As they believe that transgenders go "against" nature. Not only Trans people, the entire LGBTQIA+ community.
Its 2020 now and I hope people will realize the importance of acceptance.

We used to have this concept of third sex in the Philippines too, before colonial era. It was probably influenced by this hindu concept. They were called "babaylan". Well, it is debatable whether babaylans are actually female priestess, but it is widely known that there are babaylans who are not male nor female and they hold a special role in pre-hispanic Philippine society as shamans or priestesses who blesses people. When the Spaniards came, they banned such things as they spread Christianity over the islands, and persecuted those babaylans because it is seen as sinful in Christian point of view.

who said i was atheist? why is it often assumed that someone who loves science is an atheist? just because God isnt real doesnt mean you cant believe in him. it just cant be proven that he exists or doesnt exist, and so its pseudoscience. so why is some invisible man in the sky more important than a living breathing human being. athiesm is the belief that there are no deities at all, but i cannot claim that they dont exist within our minds, they just dont have any standing outside of ourselves. so i cannot be called atheist.
where, pray tell, does /He/ say that transgender is wrong? are you sure you arent projecting onto him? isnt that sinful to do? insist that your views are his? doesnt that count as using his name in vain? what kind of god fearing christian will deny their own gods wishes of Peace and Love and loving thy neighbour, kith and kin. im not going to make the effort to assume what my gods think of myself or my peers being transgender. it would be disrespectful to them to do so.

India was never homophobic. Like never! The Britishers brainwashed our ancestors by preassuring their own beliefs on the people of our country and thats what made India homophobic. I wish people in our country knew about their own culture better. This is just soo sad

And its sad to see the elder generation still stuck in the prejudice. The existence of LGBTQ society should have been a non issue in the world. So sad to see it is because we are trying to put labels on everyone.

It's not an easy journey alone. I prayed every night while I was 'there', knowing that what I did is totally wrong. My parent passed away, my siblings disconnected all of our family ties.
After 10 years of filthy living, God answered my prayer at last - but with lots of obstacles & conditions that really hard - only then I felt so stressful and miserable. But chance only knocks once, so I packed all of my stuff and went back to my hometown on 2015.
People around keep harassing me, not to mention also trying to abuse me sexually, but I don't care! They don't understand what I'm going through, and I don't need to explain why.
Now, I'm having a great life away from those sad world. Yes, back then I got tons of money but I'm not happy either. Today, after hardly picking myself up to be a 'man' again, it's really good to know that I did the best choice yesteryears. Slowly but steadily, I'm getting stronger. It's OK if I don't be rich but at least I'm feeling great this way. My best friends are all around to be with and that's enough.
I do really hope that they will get through no matter what kind of hardship to transform themselves. Not because of others but for yourself. I wish them well with lots of love and prayer...
Believe me, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, my fellow friends. Don't be sad, don't lose hope. Just BELIEVE!

India is often a land of many Cultures, People and History. Ancient India and its Native religion (Hinduism) embraced diversity and different genders, It gave the world Kamasutra (The Sex Manual) and accepted Homosexuality, Hindu Fables often speak of Legendary & Heroic Men who identified themselves as Transgender, They were the equivalent of Great Heroes like Hercules and Ulysseus, But for India !!! That's not all, The Chief God of Hindu Pantehon (Shiva) is mentioned to be a Transgender (Being Part Male and part Female). So imagine how much they respected Transgender people when they worshipped a Transgender God as their Chief Deity !!!
But after India was Invaded by Islamic Empires and Colonized by British, Principles and Morals of Christianity and Islam crept into Hinduism and the Local Population made the Hijra (Transgender people) victims of Bigotry and people used to Humiliate them and consider them "A Social Disease". (This Bigotry and hate still exists today, Hard to get rid of the Past so easily).
But, With time, India is soon changing and embacing them and recognizing the human rights of people just like their Ancient indian Culture which celebrated them as a normal part of the Society !

you guys honestly make the best cultural videos in youtube. I'm amazed at how much I can learn from these few Style Out There videos I've watched. By far, this one has opened my eyes the most; I had no idea the Hijra actually "existed". The one about matching couples is also really great. Thank you so much for making these amazing videos and I hope to see more soon! Love you guys

This kind of made me tear up a bit, both happy and sad, sad because these people are being denied such things that a lot of us take for granted, but happy because even though they have lost touch with blood family, they are still able to find a family that openly accepts and loves them for them. I love this series so much :D

These women are beautiful and so empowering... hoping that more people watch this video and become aware of this loving and welcoming side of hijras.

Wow most people here are so accepting, everytime I watched videos like lgbt rights from my country the comment section is always filled with hate and I can't stand reading it even if I'm a straight girl I really can't stand seeing these people get treated badly even tho they didn't harm anyone and it's theur personal bussiness.
