At about 1.30am local time a large container ship slammed into the 1.6-mile bridge and caught fire before sinking and causing multiple vehicles to fall into the water below, according to a video posted on Twitter/X.
It is not known at present whether there are any casualties. Emergency services were searching for at least seven people believed to be in the water.
Agencies received 911 calls reporting a vessel travelling outbound from Baltimore that had struck a column on the bridge, causing it to collapse.
Multiple vehicles were on the 47-year-old bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor trailer, Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department, said.

The writing says a partial part of the bridge collapses meanwhile I'm watching the entire bridge collapse
The entire Bridge is over a mile long, only this section collapsed
Ditto
You think the entire 1.6 mile bridge is in the one shot?
It looked like that in the darkness footage , I thought same, but in daylight you can see it's partial ,still devastating. And I still wonder how it was able to happen .I mean what was that bridge made of .
You clearly can't see the entire bridge in the shot, are you blind?
Just imagine how much worse this could have been during peak hour...
Just imagine how much better if it never happened.

It seems no one can understand how the entire bridge collapsed from one pier being destroyed. Think about how much unsupported weight there is from one pier collapsing and the ridiculous amount of forces applied to the rest of the structure. Theres no way that could be expected to stay intact.
They’re clearly a bunch of plebs, it’s obvious one pillar being smashed out would make it fall like a deck of cards, how people don’t get that is stupid.
Think about the poor condition of our infrastructure, that the entire bridge can't even withstand a hit on a pier at one end of the bridge.
Think about the 1.5T going to the military.
Don't try to justify this.
That's the design of modern bridges. All segments/ sections of the bridges lean on each other, not to save cost, but to minimize the number of pillars which could obstruct the ship movement underneath the bridge. Thus the destruction of one pillar results in collapse of the whole bridge.
@@user-ps2nn5pj4g it has nothing to do with poor design, to build a bridge that size that could withstand entirely loosing structural support but still allow passage of ships would be unfeasible. Very few cities would be able to afford the cost of building an extremely over engineered structure like that
@@user-ps2nn5pj4g This has nothing to do with poor infrastructure. 11 day old account, I smell a troll
You had one job
Is Lloyds of London on the hook for insurance for this? Because this took 220 mill$ to build in the 1960s. Now you’re looking at the price of most of the Dodgers bullpen to build back better? Heck it may even cost an entire Ukrainian day of military hardware.
If it was designed built by the people of London then it would not have failed so catastrophically like that.
@@King-Arthur-The-First 👍 Well said! Back in the day British Engineering.... BUILT TO LAST! 🇬🇧
You're making jokes? you're a disgrace
You're making jokes?
That's terrible, half way long the bridge you can see around 4/5 emergency vehciles with flashing lights and as the bridge collapses you can see them all go in. RIP.
Search and rescue looking for 7 people who were on the bridge at time of the collapse (according to another vid I saw)
From what I have been able to gather from other channels, it seems that the bridge was closed and being worked on?? They mention about 'workers' going into the water. 'Workers' on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Not sure, it could be emergency? or incident. but that is all that I can summarize until we get more information.
Damn that's sad. Dying on the job has to be one of the worst ways.@@metalgearsausage
That's sad. It's dark so i hope the workers managed to get out some how but that's a long way up and alot of mangled metal. I'm guessing the workers were assessing the damage caused by the ship to see if the bridge was still safe to use.@@gaebren9021
You only see 4 to5 but there are I am firefighter for 33 years I know for a fact there are more first responders you just cannot see them
I feel very sad for the people that were on that bridge. I feel like weeping for them. Precious lives 😢😭. This is so much to bear. I feel like weeping.
This is terrible!!! That bridge has been iconic to Baltimore skyline since before i was born. Prayers go out to anyone involved. Sad day.
AS a Marine Engineer of some years you can clearly see that as the Ship turns the corner that it looses power to all lights and steering gear , it takes time for the Engineers to recover the electrical power but it clearly comes back on and fails again . Speculation could be that in the panic Navigation attempted to use bow thrusters to recover the steering but with too few generators on this would overload the electrical systems and it again looses power . Power is again recovered and you can see the shadow of the exhaust coming out of the funnel as the main engine(s) are run full astern ! Power is restored just before the bridge in hit ! Where were the tugs which should have been escorting the ship under the bridge!
Excellent explanation. But, respectfully, I'm watching this multiple times with max resolution on a huge screen. I did not see any lights go out prior to the ship striking the support; I did see the bridge framework temporarily block the lights as the ship was moving from this point of view. I admit that I may be completely wrong about this. We'll just have to wait for more info.
Loses power

Let's make it look like an accident some guy on RUclips will explain it for us 😂
Holy hell... I hope everyone is found safe.
Very Sad 😢
Before the video commenced, a short advert from Baillie Gifford played telling me to invest in the American dream...🥴
Do you see the flashing lights on the bridge surface? Those are all the construction workers
crazy that I was on that bridge at a similar time a couple of days before .
What was the cargo on the cargo ship?
You might expect a section to collapse but that was a catastrophic failure. RIP.
One would think that a bridge in that place, would have abutments that could cope with that and protect the bridge itself?
no protection for the pillons ? bifore there most be cement construction to avoid disasters
no amount of cement would protect the bridge from a collision like this !
A direct result of minimal infrastructure spending across decades.
Can't you see how tall the ship is? Not only that you have to consider its inertia and where on the bridge it made contact.
I have heard (don't know if true or not at this point) that the ship lost power and they called a mayday. Because of the mayday, bridge traffic was stopped. But if so, why wasn't the road crew working on the bridge warned? And maybe I just don't know any better. But I would have thought that after the 1980 Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse, all bridges with large ships ships going under them would have bumbers, steel outer peripheries, or fenders. If this bridge did have something like that, it obviously was no where near enough and outdated for ships of today's size.
This was definitely a design failure.
I have read the same reports. The ship suffered a catastrophic failure and managed to send an SOS, but the workers on the bridge were oblivious for unknown reasons.
Collided with the One pillar that collapsed the entire bridge.
Hope everyone is rescued and emergency workers all be ok 🧿
wow is this the new polly bridge
Thanks for explaining "Lanes in both directions are closed."
The media: "A """"large section""" of the bridge collapsed"
The bridge:
🙏anybody on that bridge survived & R.I.P to those that hadn't
I hope there were nobody on the bridge at that moment 😮
you can see the lights of what looks like road work vehicles just right of the middle of the bridge about 4 to 5 vehicles
There was casualties sadly.
I saw somewhere that there was workers on the bridge at the time.
You can see cars on the collapsing segments
Yeah, people are saying "Mass casualty event" so, not good.
WTF. What time did this happen? How many lives were lost?
How old is the bridge ?
Who built it. ?
What firm had the maintenance contract ?
Did you not read the description or watch the video?
None of that really matters when its hit by a 900 foot long ship.
Incredible number of awful comments on here - what's wrong with people?
Welcome to youtube.
FJB!
welcome to the internet, your first day?
I don't like foreigners
How long have you got?
Sweet Jesus, that is horrifying! Those poor people!
Wow - frightening - hope some people make it out
Why wasn't the cargo ship centered between the pillars while crossing under the bridge .. just thinking out loud
Maybe some mulfunction on the ship. No other logical explanation.
Ship lost power twice thus no engine control.
Looks like it was already on fire, lost its steering and drifted into the bridge support.
my conjecture as well
I watched it again with max resolution on a huge screen. All I saw was an orange-tinted light on the ship pointing forward. I didn't see any fires.
It wasn't on fire. That is the engines being commanded, probably at full power, I hope in a vain attempt to reverse thrust. However, in this insane dystopia anything is possible.
You don't really beleive that a ship could knock down that bridge, what a fckn joke, it was a planned demolition
It infact, could. The old infrastructure of the bridges and the size of a cargo freighter makes this an absolute possibility, I'm sorry to inform you, but this was not planned. If it was, why would they kill people and slam a boat into it? Use your head please. @@FredPerps
Anyone else see the little explosions creating smoke along the bridge exactly the same time? Hard to catch one goes off in mid air on the far right side
I cannot see it, others have said they can see them too. I can't see any reason the right hand span would break first on the roadway. The steel had already torn away on the lhs of the lh pillar.
yes ..making clean breaks
That was one poorly designed bridge.
There was another bridge next to this one, which had the same fate, its ironic.
It’s like something out of a disaster movie. The bridge didn’t seem particularly strong
The bridge was as strong as any other. The ship that hit the support was in excess of 20,000 tons.
Big metal structures weighing millions of pounds dont just float in the air on their own..of course the entire thing fell
How was that possible? Was the ship captain sleeping?
Do you think the master stays awake for 6 weeks continuously?
According to reports, the ship suffered a complete shutdown. The captain tried to steer with what momentum they had, but eventually, with no thrust, they're at the mercy of the current. The backup generator did turn on which is why you can see the lights on the ship completely shut off, then turn back on. They completely lost any control of that ship.
What's infuriating is that there are now reports that the company who owned that ship knew of its power failure issues beforehand and this has happened before, but this time it was in a terrible spot.
It looks like the people in the bridge may have seen the ship coming. There’s a large space where the ship is and the cars on the far right seem to have their emergency lights on. They may have thought they were far enough forward/ traffic jam.
Rip Baltimore Bridge 🙏🙏🙏 you were a real one
Who was filming ?
cctv you clown....
It's locked off, so it's a camera for monitoring things. Probably loads for monitoring ship traffic, for just this sort of reason.
Serious questions on how to get round a nightmare for locals. 😩
Tough watch rip.
damn that looks expensive
It wasn't a collision, more rather an attack...
They should have some kind of camera to show how many folks was on the bridge. Pray for the people lost
The ship itself must've cried a lot :(
What a tragedy bro
Not the walk through the garden they expected
Unbelievable
Captain: ahhh shsshhh my bad
Did the shop hit the bridge supports
Yes, the shop hit the bridge supports
1.6 miles?
2.57 km in SI units
I always hated bridges this is why.
I know a ship hit it but that came down like a pack of cards , you have to question the design and construction of the bridge in the first place , you can expect the section the ship hit to fall but the rest of it should have held up .
The whole bridge didn't fall.
When a 95000 tonne ship takes out a central support, that part of the construction is gone.
The right hand section should have held up. The roadway broke first which is very weird.
I wonder if they had a pilot aboard or was navigating themselves
Two people have been rescued from the water and one is in a "very serious condition," the chief of Baltimore's fire department says.
James Wallace said the first unit arrived on scene at 1.50am and reported the "complete collapse" of the Key Bridge.
"Multiple people" were reported to be on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
Two people were removed from the water, Mr Wallace said. One person refused care but another has been transferred to a trauma centre in "very serious condition".
American conspiracy theorists are going to orgasm over this.
What would the conspiracy be? Seems like a fairly straight forward Maritime accident.
Did you see the explosion under the bridge before it collapsed?
@@user-cb2vm3um7g no explosion, no explosive ordinance recovered, lol what a fool. Two objects running into each other and kicking up water / dirt is NOT the same thing as an explosion. Nice try though 🤖
That bridge was very rusty anyway. Its years old.
So sad. I hope some people will survive. I wonder how fast water fills inside a car.
Loss of power from the ship..
Were there any cars on the bridge?
Do you live in a place where there are no news websites?
It looks like thrre was
Looks Like it but then everything goes dark as it comes down , no sign of any lights going in to the water
I thought all modern day safety standards had to be set for all bridges to withstand such an event?
There are aerial shots. Take a look at the size of the vessel and the width of the bridge. Nothing is going to stop a 95000 tonne fully laden container ship.
Especially after the 1980 Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse. The new Skyway bridge has rows of large bumpers for ships of all kind of sizes.
There were no cars moving on the bridge but these 4 ones standing there not moving, had lights flashing. sounds like they were from security or something.
Praying for survivors and for the dead such a sad loss of life the captain will have alot of explaining to do to have made such an error in judgement a bridge is a huge obstruction hard to miss
Man, it collapses completely. Hope everyone safe 🙏
Well, stay healthy for all of us & Safety First! Peace across the Globe ✌😉
If this bridge had been built by the greatest engineer of all time, Ismbard Kingdom Brunel it would never have fallen no matter what hit it
The captain of that ship has to held accountable. That’s insane!!!
Likely not. The captain of the ship wasn't actually responsible. The engine shut off entirely, causing anyone on that ship to completely lose control. They enabled the backup generator, only for them to still fail to control it.
The one responsible will likely be the company who owns the ship, as it recently had come out that the company knew this ship was having power issues, and used it anyways.

My understanding is Baltimore has the oldest and strongest harbor pilots union in the country. 2 pilots per ship. If this ship was having catastrophic failures of its electrical grid earlier in the channel, before the bridge one would think they would dropped anchor and worked something else out.
Apparently they did drop anchor, but for whatever reason they still drifted too much and struck the boat.
Who gave the Nissan Altima owner the keys to the ship?
Almost seems like it was on purpose.
If you look closely the ship's lights went out just seconds before the collision. That was enough to loose power and control of the ship.
It is not shown on this video that the ship's lights went off before the collision. @@ac583
The lights went out after it hit
@@user-bk3fz7wr5n There is a longer video of before the ship hit. It lost power twice before hitting the bridge and power going out a third time.
Your observation is correct for this video. However, the full video shows the lights going out earlier on, which means the engine room had problems. see it at let us know@@user-bk3fz7wr5n

How does a ship that size crash like that? They'd have all the guidance and gadgets in the world to help them along with tugs and so on. All those lives lost, unbelievable. People better go to prison for this. There's no excuse for this level of incompetence.
Looks like there was a fire on it might have lost its engine power and steering
Tons of things can go wrong in a ship which can cause loss of control and power even, that doesn't necessarily mean loss of power control means the engine dies either. Sometimes they can get stuck at full throttle. We should wait for the facts before sending people to prison.
