    Fabric softener used to actually have a purpose back in the days, when laundry products were harsher and left clothes rough and scratchy. Fabric softener coats the clothes with a hydrophobic coating and it builds up over time. That waxy coating reduces the permeability of activewear and reusable period products which is why they advise against using it. It also makes the grime harder to remove from clothes, so, really, nowadays fabric softener brings more harm than benefit. Nerd rant over, just wanted to share!

    I've never understood fake tan. It smells bad and it often looks bad. I don't know who decided to demonise fair skin but it's pretty messed up to talk about looking pasty/ugly/sick because of your natural skin colour. You don't look sick. You're just used to seeing yourself with fake tan on.

    • @susiem.2068
      @susiem.2068 Год назад +3

      100%. It's crazy that in some parts of the world, if you're too dark you're pushed to bleach your skin but if you're too fair you're pushed to tan. Somehow the only thing that benefits from this amount of self hatred is the beauty industry.

It’s so sad the mental toll it’s taken to get me to a place where I feel confident in my own skin. I am with you on every single thing you listed, except cannot get rid of qtips 😂 I will keep cleaning my ears after showering until something bad happens. It’s just too good!
    I’m glad you talked about stopping self tanner- more people need to do that! Out of the whole list, stopping self tanning is the one that I think helps simplify the most. Self tanning really causes a lot of complication in my life, at least, so it’s a relief to have decided to just be over it and stay the same color all the time!

    I use cream bronzer, blusher, and highlighter, then set face with powder, then i use powder bronzer, blusher, and highlighter. I find that my look is more dimensional, and also i find the products stay unchanged all day with the double layers of products. I realize that those extra steps aren't for everyone, but i love the process of doing makeup, so i enjoy the extra steps. In reality. it doesn't really add that much time (maybe two minutes) to my overall makeup process anyway.

    I use Qtips in my ears, probably shouldn't but I do. Every several years my ears will plug up, likely from wax blocking the canal area or whatever, so I will go to the doctor and get my ears flushed out. They take a cup, hold it by your ear and flush your ear with warm water. As odd as it sounds, it feels nice! The problem is everything is super loud afterward because your ears are squeaky clean! Normally I hate going to the doctor but for this I don't mind at all. Ok, I probably just earned the title of weirdest subscriber. Good video!

      This has happened to me for years. Mines unrelated to q-tip use entirely but drugstores actually have diy wax removal kits. My primary care doctor recommended debrox when it became a repeat occurrence and I have been using it ever since as needed. It does not involve sticking anything hard in your ears. It's basically a hydrogen peroxide solution that loosens the wax and then you shoot the water into your ears as you stand over the sink. I'm sure some people would find it super gross but it doesn't bother me at all.

    Liquid lipsticks spawned the whole Lip Scrub & Lipstick Remover and Lip Mask habits too. If you use the long-wearing product that's impossible to get off and that dries out your lips, you need all those other things too; so from a marketing perspective, getting people to stop touching up their lipstick through the day as had been done normally since at least the 1920s, was extremely profitable. For me, taking time to touch up my makeup is indeed a form of self-care so I never got into the can't-wash-it-off type of products, but I get that some people want that. Also don't need primers, eye primers or setting sprays, with my normal-to dry skin.

I went through a phase using them daily and it made my ears itchy and I think I irritated them so I agree you can overdo it so if it's all or nothing for you...nothing is better than daily.

The only except for me is the Tatcha Silk line but I use my generous sample of this sparingly as well. Great video! Edited: and candles!!! They put so many harmful emmitants into your home, and are terrible for your lungs. No matter how ‘clean’ your candles are (I.e. sans lead wick) you are still breathing in foreign air filled with particulates (i.e. small particles). I don't buy bronzer because I like just doing a few steps for my makeup. Since I have a medium/South Asian skintone the perimeter/the area where you would apply it is naturally darker than the rest of my face. So I'll just wear a light skin tint but avoid the perimeter of my face. Since it's just a light coverage skin tint it doesn't look odd. But it almost looks like I am wearing bronzer since my skin has that pigmentation already.

    Our lists overlap in a few categories, like laundry items aside from unscented detergent, q-tips, liquid lipsticks, and cream highlighters. I do still love cream highlighters, but I have a few in my collection that I’m extremely satisfied with so I don’t feel a need to try other formulas. Something else I don’t buy are cotton pads. Most often I apply toners with my hands, but if I do feel the need to use something to apply it with, I use reusable rounds. I like those for removing face masks, too.

    I use plastic ear cleaners (can't remember what brand) to clean my ears with and use Q-Tips for nosebleed care. I put dollop of Neosporin on each end of the Q-Tip and coat the inside of my nostrils to keep them from getting too dry. (I have to do this b/c a medication I take causes nosebleeds as a side effect.)

    I started using more cream and stick products as I aged. They often look better. Under eyes eating concealer when not set with powder…I know just what you mean. My ophthalmologist told me to use cotton buds for washing my eyelashes. And I know the advice is against using them to clean our ears, but my otolaryngologist is fine with me using them. He had me show him what I do first, though. I absolutely hate liquid lipsticks. My skincare routine has gotten more complicated as I’ve aged, but I’m always looking for ways to reduce the complexity of it. I understand where you’re coming from. We’ve used fragrance free products of all kinds since they became available. I’m extremely sensitive to scents. I haven’t tried press-on nails, because it seems like all that plastic can’t be good for the environment. Nail polish probably isn’t either, but I have a few. Self tanning has never worked for me. The smell, issues with application, and all of them turning me orange just don’t seem worth the hassle.

    Sarah I there with you on nail polish. I trimmed back the color of my lipsticks and my nail polish pretty much mimics that. I also have a black and blue and seafoam like green. Less is more. Easier to choose what to put on. I use mascara past it's prime on my eyebrows and it works like a charm to darken and set my brows. It also takes 10 seconds to put on. I also don't buy a primer or setting spray...I think those are so gimics put out there by the makeup industry. Powder has always set a look. Your moisturizers/sunscreens are your primer. True I use an eyeshadow primer, so I don't have creasing, but that is different.

    I wish i could stop buying dryer sheets! Here in Minnesota, there is a HUGE difference in our clothing and linens when i forget to throw in two per load. The static is unbearable, and lasts until the next wash. Getting dressed or getting into bed is a miserable shock fest; it's not just one shock but a stream of static discharges! I have had to strip the bed and remake it if i try to use sheets that have gotten laundered without dryer sheets. As for dryer balls, i have bought them for the sole purpose of stopping our dependence on dryer sheets (both for our pocket book and also for the environment), but they are WORTHLESS. They do absolutely nothing that they claim to do. They do not reduce static, they do not keep clothing from tangling in the dryer, and they do not speed up drying time.

      I think climate has a lot to do with this. Dryer balls do work for me (we have five big wool ones), but I live in North Carolina.
