    Since I'm not a physician I can't speak to the question of depression. All I know is that after I exercise I feel great; my mood has definitely lifted. As the late Jack LaLanne said, "I hate the exercises but I like the results."

    I love walking, and no matter the weather I used to walk a minimum of 10km per day. Certainly I felt very much better for doing an exercise regularly. Last summer, having had cardiac problems, I could barely walk a few kilometres. Once I had a pacemaker implant I am back to my daily 10km plus. Not only do I feel better, but I am happier and feeling great to be alive. Many thanks Docs

    Love that you all have done this! I started running 45 years ago in order to manage the stress of being a single working mother, while going to night school, and having a toddler with a life-threatening genetic disorder. Not only did it work almost immediately and has continued to, but running has also kept me from succumbing to the darkest parts of depression after my son passed away. Run, walk, swim, hike, dance... as you said.. get up and move. It may literally save your life physically and mentally.

    For me exercise is all about keeping me limber and lifting my spirits. I used to be an avid exerciser and stopped for decades, gained a TON of weight and was very depressed. I decided to stop drinking sugar soda, eat fresh veggies and have lost almost 100#.
    I started exercising again and was shocked to notice how much it improves my mental health. I’m old and still fat so not looking to become an athlete but I know I’m going to keep working out daily mainly for my mental health. Great topic!

    I have been exercising a lot lately with my physiotherapy routine (biking, weights and lots of yoga stretches) and although I find it helps it doesn't get rid of the symptoms all together. I would hesitate to rely on exercise completely to manage my depression, anxiety and PTSD. It might work for people with mild symptoms though. Just my 2 cents worth. In reading other comments I do have to say when I am out in nature with my camera I do feel good after.

    I liveaboard a sailboat and have enough room to do HIIT strength training 3 days a week and 3 days of cardio walking videos in the galley. You don't need a lot of room to workout. I'm afraid of bears so I don't go for hikes in the bays we visit so this way I still get in my exercise. I find that working out helps keep life manageable. And I can feel the difference if I get distracted and stop working out.

    I’ve always loved being active, not just for the fitness and fun aspect, but for me a strong body = healthy mind! But after being diagnosed with ADHD two years ago (at 73 years old), I know exercise/activities are also like medicine for me. So is music, and the two fit together nicely for me. So, now I see exercise as a way to manage my ADHD. One example is when I will need to “sit still and focus”, I do something active first: walk, cycle, rebounder workout, etc. and it really helps😊

    I just turned 46 and I'm in the best shape of my life, better than when I was 26. What motivates me is that it helps with my depression. There's much in my life I can't control but seeing results from exercise, and sometimes just completing what I started, gives me a mood boost, I don't get from medications or other areas of my life. For me, martial arts are what motivate me to exercise, but I like a variety of exercises too.

    Although it seems counter-intuitive, since I have psoriatic arthritis, I exercise everyday because I know it makes a huge difference over time in my quality of life, particularly in controlling the a chronic autoimmune disease. On the hardest days when it hurts to get out of bed, exercise is often the best thing I can do. So I really appreciate this video and especially the message that we're not helpless to our emotions and chronic illnesses. Maybe we can't cure ourselves, but we do a lot for ourselves by putting one foot in front of another, and maybe picking up a weight. Thanks for all the great videos--you guys are the best.

    I used to do more exercises, stretching, and weights but as I've aged I have so many issues with my feet, shoulder, hips and hands I've had to cut way back. This in turn has made me more depressed. I've had severe depression my whole life and exercise didn't make it worse but it never made a huge impact except to help me keep my weight down and gave me more purpose to get out of bed. So in that respect it helped, but unfortunately I still have to take meds. Everyday is a mental struggle.

    Last fall, I started watching what I was eating and walking every day on the treadmill. I'm obese. My walks were 5 minutes of warm-up, 30 minutes of faster walking, 5 minute cool-down. In December, I added strength training 3 days a week. Then I added short swimming sessions 3 days a week. Then I added daily stretching sessions. I am losing weight slo-o-o-owly, but keep telling myself, "Trust the process." None of my activities are at gee-whiz speeds or weights, but I'm (pretty) consistent.
    The other day, my dental tech checked my BP TWO times. Seems it's gone down quite a bit. So, even though I might not be SEEING results, and depression and anxiety still rear their ugly heads, exercise IS working - just not as damn quickly as BAD habits can mess with me!!!

    I just discovered you docs, thanks for the exercise suggestion and reinforcement, I have had depression and anxiety all my life and as I get older (and have more health issues) it's depressing, even though a healthy vegan, stress got to me, last year I got shingles, covid, mysterious bladder infections that took months and strong antibotics to clear and now I'm trying to rebuild my microbiome. LADIES, make sure if you are not feeling well and can't find an answer get a urine culture done (my doc thought it was long covid and insomnia, etc., even with NO UTI infection symptoms (as when you were younger). That was my story (and others my age). I'm 79 and have always been very active and so they say look younger and act younger, I'm working at getting back to that but depression stands in the way a bit. I'm back at the gym now and walking my old dog, this helps her as well! Just don't stop exercising, I did during the worst of my health problems but I won't again, I'm hoping in 10 years or more to go out while exercising!

    The joke about Doritos having hope molecules was great and made me LOL. Laughter also seems to increase "hope molecules". I like the way you doctors use the scientific terms instead of the hope molecules way of describing it like the lady on the video. If I just heard that I would think it was just some pseudoscience thing. But yes, excercise does elevate mood for sure in the short term. I'm used exercise most of my life to deal with chronic and sometimes severe depression. I will say though, that it only goes so far, at least in my case. When I am very depressed and dealing with serious mental health stuff, the excercise is like a bandaid, it's good but it won't cure it. Drugs have never worked for me and I am wary of drugs and their side effects anyway. Yes, my experience with excercise and depression is it works but don't put your eggs all in one basket if you are very depressed. You'll probably need to do more like counselling, social activities, change of diet maybe, maybe drugs, and oh, yeah, last but not least, watch Talking with Docs for the laughs and excellent medical info.💗

    We see it even in movies very often, a child, man or woman gets frustrated and then they start running as fast as they can and then they get some release.

    When I'm angry or upset, I can't keep still. I have to go and do something physical like washing dishes and housecleaning, and I know that gardening helps my anxiety and depression. Sometimes we laypersons look at the results of studies and think, didn't everybody already know that? 🤔 Guess not. 😉 But thank you for the confirmation. 🤗👩‍🦳💕

    While exercise has tons of benefits, I’ve never felt that it improved mental health in a meaningful way. The mind is too powerful and takes you wherever it pleases.

      Thats cause you never really listened to it and instead overrate your mind. There is something vain about it.

    Walking. Even with a walker. Use the pedometer on your phone to track how far, and how many steps.

    If you’re depressed, it’s hard to find the motivation to “get up off your seat and get around” (aka exercise).

    Depression is a serious illness treatable with medication. Exercise is wonderful, maybe as an adjunct, but please see an expert physician.

      Yes we are certainly not telling people to stop their meds or not go to therapy. But this can help prevent it in some situations.

    Most people sit for a living, or worse can work from home and don’t really need to move but 1000 steps a day. Everybody thinks they are ADHD or are in-fact ADHD. I am pretty sure almost nobody had this problem 50 years ago. Technology, combined with a diet of processed foods means you can sit all day every day.
    How many people were ADHD and depressed 50 years ago?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 месяцев назад +1

      So we would agree the number was less 50 years ago. Technology, lack of exercise and poor quality food are the causes for the uptick. Back in the day people didn't tell about being depressed. You were encouraged to suck it up which has its own problems

    • @mortimersnerd9991
      @mortimersnerd9991 6 месяцев назад

      The problems were different for sure. At the time, the view of the future was that technology and related advancements would make life better. When in fact a marvel of engineering such as the Herman Miller Aeron, on which I am presently enthroned, may one day be cited as toxic to wellbeing as lead. --- I like your videos. Keep going. I should get up now.@@TalkingWithDocs

    As someone who has struggled with depression since menopause, I find these comments to be actually somewhat patronizing. I’ve never stopped exercising. I’m very physically active that said, I also have a struggle every single day to want to keep breathing. To suggest a there’s some thing simple I or others are doing wrong that’s causing this is very insulting to me and every other person struggling with major depressive disorder. It’s not about “lifting spirits”or being upset or hurt or disappointed , it’s that I am literally no longer the person I was 10 years ago no matter how I eat, sleep, exercise, pray or meditate, It’s as if like thick curtain hangs between me and the excitement for living I used to feel every day. So yes, this post and the caviler comments make about an illness that has seriously changed my life is incredibly irritating.

    Is it basic physics??? "A body in motion, tends to stay in motion" I know for me the more I lay around the more tired I become and the more I move the more things I want to do around the house :)

    100% subscribe to this (the docs, and the exercising). Team sport is sociable and enforces commitment but I wondered if the ' hope molecules' were susceptible to being corrupted by any negativity, like feeling responsible for team losses, (the 'Backs' always blame the 'Halves') and wondering if you just slipped off the pitch, would the team benefit more from the space left than from your efforts. 🏑 🙄
    Just go for a walk. Definitely walk through the countryside and get the heart rate up.
    What stadium was filmed here? That was one massive cockerel in the background.
