Living in a rainy Northern hemisphere I take 4000iu daily year round. Also try to get a half hour a day of sunshine when the weather cooperates.
I shun the sun, twelve skin cancers removed. Supplementing all the way. When I go out, it is long sleeves, gloves and wide brimmed hats with sun screen on my face.
Me too, I’m prone to Melanoma along with four other family members, I’ve had to have Chemotherapy recently for an aggressive cancer.

@@duchesskll I only take D3 in a multi vitamin/mineral supplement. Which contains 25 mcg, that is 125% of daily recommended. Salmon, tuna and whole eggs are considered good sources.

I had a severe Vitamin D deficiency but if I took a supplement I felt very unwell. I was finally diagnosed with Primary Hyperparathyroidism.
Excellent video as usual. One thing. More sun at lower latitudes is NOT because you are closer to the sun. A minor detail.
Last year I stopped taking Vitamin D during the summer months. When I got my blood work done in September I was LOW in Vitamin D...I was shocked because I'm outside a lot. I have horses and dogs that I walk daily. We have a big property I'm always on the riding lawn mower or weed wacking. I'm 61 years old I didn't want to be low on vitamin D, but now I take it daily regardless.
I read a book that said if you get sun on your skin, but then wash your skin with soap then it washed all the benefits off your skin. It has to sit on your skin for 24 hours to soak in and become usable vitamin D. So it may simply be because of our culture norms of bathing with soap daily 🤷♀️

I live in Toronto and found out last fall that I was Vitamin D deficient, 57 was my level on a scale of 75 to 250. I had no idea that I was deficient so I would recommend that everyone have their Vitamin D and B's checked as part of their annual exams. I started taking a supplement and am now in the normal range.

One question is whether sun exposure is superior to supplementation? Does the body benefit more from sunshine than pills? Or, does it make no difference as to the source?
I have been to the skin cancer show and seek to avoid a repeat performance. I restrict my sun exposure with clothing, sunhats, sunblock, etc. It's a supplement for me.
Just take vitamin D pills and stay out of the sun problem solved
Many years ago, I can remember seeing a guy who had fallen asleep at the beach. Even the bottom of his feet got severely burned! I’ve had bad sunburn from standing watching Victoria Day Parade. Ended up with blisters, on my arms and face. Sooo painful. My Internal Specialist asked me to start taking Vitamin D and Calcium as my blood platelets dropped severely. Plus I’m 70 now so might need extra protection for my bones. Thank you very much for this info. I’m starting to get sun damage on my face from my younger days now. That surprised me with it coming out so many years later. I thought my eczema was spreading.

Well it depends on how much vitamin D you get from diet and supplements
I have had skin cancer so I don't go out in the sun much and I cover up if I do. A few months ago, my Vitamin D level was 27. I started taking a supplement and now it is 54. I don't know if you have talked about getting your levels checked but I think people should know this information for themselves. They don't have to guess about it.
This was a nice discussion of the various ways to get Vitamin D, and how much sunlight it takes to get it. I was surprised, however, given the title of the video, that there was no mention of how much supplementation is enough, and how much is too much. I suppose that, in the end, everyone should get a Vitamin D test every year to see how their levels are, and then adjust their supplementation accordingly. Also not mentioned in this video is how high Vitamin D levels should we be looking for? I did get tested once, back in 2020, and I was at 33, with a general recommendation of >30. Yet, I have prostate cancer, and I have since learned that the rate of prostate cancer progression may be slower if you have higher levels of Vitamin D. So, how high do you recommend levels should be? Over 50? How much supplementation is safe? I'm currently taking about 5-6000 iu per day, and thinking that if I can get my level to stay in the 50-60 level, that would be a good thing.
How much in terms of IU would the times you guys stated give ? Generally speaking. Thanks.

Hey doc, how do you get the sun to shine on places where it never shines?
It's not that you are closer to the sun when you are near the equator that affects the amount of vitamin D3 your body makes. The amount closer you are is insignificant. Instead, because the sun is higher in the sky at noon near the equator, it is cutting through a shorter path through the atmosphere, so more sunlight gets through to you. Up at the 45th parallel, in North America, like near Seattle, the sun is low at noon, and cuts through a longer diagonal path through the atmosphere, and more sunlight is filtered out before it gets to you, so you need to spend more time in the sun to make the same amount of vitamin D3 than you would need in Miami.

@@TalkingWithDocs You guys really don't get it. The sun is 93 million miles away. As stated, it is not that you are closer, it is the amount (depth) of atmosphere the sun has to shine through. Why do you think you can look directly at the sun shortly before sunset?
Shorter route in atmosphere = less absorption.
But this clip is informative, its not going into scientific depth or people wouldnt watch (especially with image of Doc in Speedos stuck in my brain!)

I discovered from 23andMe that I have two of possibly three snip’s that makes it harder for me to make D3 in my liver. So I need more UVB light and more D3 supplements. Just don’t burn!
I'm at the 35th latitude at 2000 ft elevation, have a small farm/homestead and hate excess clothes.....I think I'm good.😉

Its not because you are closer to the sun but because the sun goes thru a less thicker layer of atmosfeer that you get more sunlight closer to the equator

Love your videos... but it isn't that Miami is "closer to the sun", it is that the rays are not striking you at as shallow an angle (not a "glancing blow" like in Montreal) and their intensity (watts/square inch) is higher. More UV per square inch of exposed skin, and a corresponding greater risk of a sunburn.
Docs are experts in medicine, not always in physics. I think what really makes the difference is that in Montreal, the sun is lower in the sky than in Miami, so its rays travel through the atmosphere longer, and more of them will be absorbed or scattered before reaching your skin. Your explanation applies to a person lying on the ground, if you stand upright the angles are different for most of the body.
Question. Since we need adequate magnesium to help activate d3 in our body when taking supplements, does it apply the same way when it comes to the sun? Will having a magnesium deficiency cause an issue with our body activating its vitamin d when the sun is out?

Good information about vitamin d. I was finally tested for my vitamin d level which was minimal and then I had a dexa scan which showed that I had osteoporosis. So I've been reading on that and it seems like the vitamin d doesn't enter the bone without K2 -mk7. Could you speak to that a little bit? I wasn't specified as one of the factors like amount of skin exposure, altitude, latitude, etc. but rather mentioned kind of in passing.

I have fair skin, Parkinson’s, a family history of melanoma, and I live in the Colorado Rockies. My dermatologist says “no sun “ for me. I try to get vitamin D through my diet, but I do take supplements. When I play golf, hike, or xc ski, I cover up head to toe .

My dermatologist told me to take between 2-5000 iu’s of vitamin D3 to help prevent reoccurring basil cell carcinomas. Seems like too much. I stick to 2,000.
Not sure if I missed you mentioning this but, as another person referred to it, does it have to be a sunny day or can you get at least some of your required ration on cloudy days? What about daylight light bulbs or SAD lights? I'm assuming no good since even windows are blockers. 🤔

You missed a biggie in regards to Vitamin D, Sun Exposure, and health. It's the correlation of Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D levels. Studies show that the farther away from the equator that you are. The greater the risk of Multiple Sclerosis.

I was taking 5000iu a day plus whatever was in the food plus sunbathing but then my level hit 100. I reduced the supplement but now I have no idea what it is but I'm not worried. Glad it didn't get too high. (100+)

California Doctor Roger Seheult is an Emergency Room doctor and he has videos out on how the Sun helps to kill viruses like Covid as well as the treatment for Spanish flu in 1918. Are you familiar and your thoughts on the importance of getting Sun exposure to treat viruses?
I read a book on the topic that said the main problem with not getting a good quantity of vitamin D from the sun is because we don’t allow it to soak into our skin. So if you sit in the sun for 15 minutes, you still have to let the benefits soak in your skin for 24 hours & not wash it off ourselves with soap, which removes all the benefits of the sun exposure. Instead just wash with water and only use soap on soiled areas 🤷♀️.
So that thankfully is not true. The vitamin D is converted below the surface of the skin and washing would have no effect on its production.
so, how many milligrams of D3 should be taken orally daily if there is no sun?
As the docs said, altitude is not to be taken lightly. I live at 9,000 ft. Watch yourself. I've been to the equator in Ecuador, Galapagos.

When you approach the equator you need less time in the sun because its rays are more direct, not because you are closer to it.

My dermatologist and I had this conversation a few weeks ago. I was surprised to discover she wasn't as high on supplements as I thought she'd be. She didn't say don't take them, but suggested that clinical trials so far are still unclear. They aren't expensive or dangerous though. The same wild fish you should be eating for Omega 3s have significant amounts of D as well.

Yes the studies are not as conclusive as they are presented. Only issue with the fish is the lead, mercury, PCBs and plastic. 🥲

I recently found out I am severely vitamin D deficient.
Doc says I my levels should be between 50-80.
My blood test came back at 11.
So they had me on a very high dose (50,000 units) for several weeks before rechecking my levels.
They came up to 43, but doc wants it to come up a little higher yet, so has me continuing the 50,000 units for a few more weeks yet before doing another recheck.
I was a little surprised my levels were that low though.
I do spend a lot of time outside.
I love hiking and kayaking and biking.
And I also do birding/photography (mostly nature photography), as well as taking my service dog for walks.
So it's not like I don't spend enough time outside.
And I don't wear sunscreen due to being allergic to one of the main ingredients in it (tested by allergist doc).
And I know I eat some of the foods that also have it in them.
But my body still was badly deficient in it for some reason.
Should also take k2 when supplementing vitamin D at high doses

Just get outside and walk in the sun each day for 30 minutes, and take a daily 2,000 IU supplement of VD3. It's a Done Deal.

I average 10,000 to 15,000 IU's a day of D3 and I'm 76 years young. I have never been an any long-term medication and I haven't had a flu or fever in over 25 years. Oh, I also consume some excellent supplements.
Plus, the only needle's I ever take are for blood tests.
Hi bob. We think you missed the point which it seems that some people do. We have a lot of videos about supplements. We advocate taking many supplements. But some people get angry, not unlike your angry comment, if we advocate taking anything whether it’s a change of diet, supplements or medications. We have had some training in nutrition and have done thousands of hours of research. We want people to be healthy. You should actually take the time to watch our channel. really appreciate this channel docs! I live in Canada too and take a daily supplement of 1000iu. I'm in mid fifties. I've heard/read that taking even more D, like 2000-4000 is recommended. As you state tho, D is fat soluble so it is stored (not flushed). Is 1000iu sufficient or should I bump up to 2-4k? I don't measure what I'm eating or time outside, etc. I just don't wanna OD on D. How would I even know if it's helping or hindering me?
