      Preordered the day they were available. Wasn't sure until I tried out a demo with a Sony rep. After that I sold my A7rii kit and took a big hit :-). Who cares, the 30th can't come soon enough!

      @Justin Candler: yeah, the lenses are big, but people (including me) want same or better performance than their old dslr and unfortunately Sony can't defy physics with the lenses. But with Sony we at least have the option to throw on a small prime like the 55 f/1.8 for a light setup. Or you can go with lighter f/4 zooms.

    I bought A7Rii 3 months ago as it was nearly 1.5k cheaper than A7Riii in Australia. All I can say, A7Rii has some obvious flaws but the image quality you get out of it is pretty amazing!

    Guys just get an A7Rii with a battery grip and two extra batteries and stop being gear heads. I've made so much money off this setup in my career for photo and video doing big commercial advertising work. It's insane how much people are driven to consume by these companies. In 18 months people will be rushing to sell their A7Riii before the value drops when the next model is announced...

      Nonsense, the A7R III is only a big upgrade for people doing wildlife/sports. I'll be waiting for a new sensor instead of wasting my cash.

      Dan! literally got these stills and video from Jared Polin. The video where he displayed these images/video came directly from his video entitled "Sony a7R III Real World Review (vs Nikon D850)" at about 30 minutes in. And, it's nothing worse than it's opposite. Just be straight up and fully disclose. People are on RUclips seeking guidance and help. Do your own real shooting, please. SMH

      Sidney Black i bought an A7 II about 2 years gap. The A7R II was too expensive. I never had any issues with the A7 II Workflow and the limitations on ISO and AF and burst speed were never important.
      With the A7R III on the market it definitely is Wirtz upgrading tot he A7R II now. Used price in Europe for a really nice piece is maybe 1200€ or if you do not need support there are Asian grey market imports brand new for 1300€.
      Will go for a well maintained used and be happy for years again. Maybe I will get an A7R III when the IV is on the market for a few months, maybe I will wait for the V or VI.
      With the quality of cameras there is little need for upgrades since some years.
      Ok, i never Shot a video in my life and do mit intend to do so

    I bought the Sony A7RII a little before the Sony A7RIII came out even though I knew that the Sony A7RIII might be on its way, but I was offered the Sony A7RII for a good price, and I thought it still was a good camera and that the price suited me better!
    I'm not professional so the two SD cards do not mean much to me, and I'm also fine with the slightly worse autofocus for my kind of photography, and I'm also using a battery grip so the battery life is also ok for me.
    I'm still happy with my Sony A7RII, and have not regretted my purchase!
    Many greetings from Denmark

      My a99 has 2 sd cards and once I got both of them to work simultaneously it really slowed the camera down and I had to go back to using one or the other so I wouldn't lose any shots waiting for the buffer to clear. The fear we all have if having a card go bad. I have been fortunate and had that happen only once in the last 10 years

    I’ve used both professionally and I say absolutely upgrade. The difference in quality is slight but it’s there. Pixel shift for product photography, 120fps in 1080 (finally) but really this is a quality of life upgrade moreso than anything else. R2 users will recall the frustration of shooting with autofocus and the dread of looking into that battery percentage corner (oh god, so I have at least 3 fully charged batteries for this gig??)
    This upgrade was the best choice I’ve made in a while. Very interested to see where they take it with the SIII though 👀

  • @Ben-fq1lj
    @Ben-fq1lj 7 лет назад +3

    Better skin tones!?!! I have to respectfully disagree. Putting a capture of 3:18 in davinci, (although you can tell without even putting it into davinci), if you try to use the hue vs hue to correct the skin tones to match, the a7riii completely goes green if you try to match the 7rii. Not only is the skin of the a7riii slightly underexposed, but just look at the hands touching the door. She looks like a zombie on the a7rii! we need a much more controlled environment to determine this.

    Does the R3 handle Metabone to Canon adapted lenses better than the R2? I had some major issues that a firmware did help, but, still sometimes issues happen, like the settings changes or weird electronic issues changing canon to manual...there is a number of times I have to turn off and back on. I have had a issue with the card slot, and usb port that I needed to repair for $800. Is there a A7R4 coming up, now that we are mid 2019??

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 лет назад +1

      The R3 does handle the adapters better than the R2 but it's still not perfect and very dependent on the lens. It's also just about useless for video autofocus. I doubt we will see an A7R4 until end of 2020 at best. With the firmware updates and the lack of an A7S3, that signals that the R series is a little while away.

      +Ari Stones the a7riii is good enough for weddings and events now so I would get that. Plus there are still plenty of improvements for general traveling / street use but the a7rii is not ideal for weddings/events but the 3 will handle it perfectly

    120fps quality vs a7s ii? also 120fps in low light quality? lastly for really good 120 fps do you really need to be in ff mode? cuz I'm thinking about selling my a7s ii and getting this, but mostly so I can use super 35mm cinema glass. if aps-c mode 120fps is pretty weak than that would throw a wrench in my plan . thanks for your reply.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад +3

      I'll do more testing soon when I have it in studio but it was great out there. We did some night astro shooting and I was focusing in near dark just as good as my 5D4 although my subjects were mostly stationary. The viewfinder is better than the RII and just like the A9. Compares well to the 5D4 but the D850 is massive so not that big.

    Still a little confused about the rolling shutter. Was this happening in single shot silent mode, too, or just continuous?
    Asking because silent mode was the big selling point for me (over the D850).

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      +Seth Cashman the silent mode on this will have less rolling shutter than the D850 in silent mode but you can see it in fast moving objects. Not portraits or landscapes though. If you really want to use silent mode for everything, only the Sony A9 used a stacked sensor to improve read times and reduce rolling shutter to virtually nothing

    I was told you can make timelapses with the camera that get transformed into a video automatically. Maybe you can check the settings again. I have this info from a Sony trainer. So maybe, just the app is not working anymore, but you can still automatically create timelapses.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      +simonbolzdotcom you can't. What you can do is undercrank 1080p video by shooting fast motion at 1fps which will seem like a timelapse when sped up but is not what we want. But it's only 1080p video, doesn't record a jpeg/raw image, and you don't have full shutter speed control like when using intervalometers

    I had a friend lend me his a7r III for a week so I could compare it to my a7r II . For my purposes, which is honestly more still images than video. i can't justify the $650 price difference (current prices) for the minor upgrade. I did like the image stabilization but I have no way of testing the claim of 6 f-stops. It seems a bit generous. and going from A mount to E the cost of adding a new lens system is really adding up

  • @jkspepper05
    @jkspepper05 7 лет назад +1

    but seriously though.. for the average consumer of which this video probably targets, it is really worth $800-1000 over the A7R2? In Hong Kong where I am the A7R2 is now as cheap as HK$15,850 (US$2,030) on the shelves compared to the A7R3 at HK$26,990 (US$3,450)

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад +2

      Not from a quality perspective obviously so you can still get the same quality on the RII. But if this camera is your daily driver, I really think the usability has improved to the point that it makes a HUGE difference. Plus I skipped Sony for my wedding cameras for so long because I needed dual SD cards so the RIII is a must for me. Also if you shoot moving subjects and not landscapes/portraits I would HIGHLY recommend the upgraded focus system/frame rate. Unless you are a landscape photographer, I'd probably upgrade.

      thanks for your thoughts and you're probably right but I'm purely a consumer (non-pro) and as such have just pulled the trigger and upgraded by old A7R for an A7R2. The 3 is tempting but I really can't justify - maybe when the 4 or 5 comes out i'll upgrade to the 3!

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад +1

      It's probably not worth it. I talked about it in the full review and showed an example. You can see a difference but only when viewing at 200%+, there is a huge chance for error given that it is multiple shots and any subject/camera movement will destroy it, and there are so few times where you can use that kind of shooting with multiple shots anyway.

  • @Marticulate

      +Marticulate it's tough with video especially for gimbal use but for photographers, I wouldn't call it a deal breaker. Plus the 5d4 doesn't have any articulated screen and the D850 doesn't flip out either so is there a better option?

    I m also curious to know what happens when lets say I m in a dark scenario and I use off camera flash with slow shutter speeds. What kind of preview i get in this case ? I see an underexposed viewfinder ? I understand most people do not need this but I face it in each and every wedding party over and over for hours at a time. The question is how those fancy mirrorless cameras stuck up to dslr competition? I have not seen a reviewer touching this BASIC matter.

    • @MaestroDK
      @MaestroDK 7 лет назад

      It has a 'gamma' setting that make the viewfinder/monitor much brighter in dark scenes. I think that should do the trick. Note that this setting is different that the 'Effect settings ON'.

    • @pahountisg
      @pahountisg 7 лет назад +1

      thank you Mick! I m still wondering what happens with the external flash. If I activate the gamma setting I will still have to check the images like a dslr and review them *after* capture. Kind of contradicting the mirrorless advantage I would guess.

    how is a7r3 compared d850?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      Neck and neck with quality. If you love the viewfinder and the more traditional style of photography, the D850 is great. But once you turn on live view, video, or silent mode, things start to fall apart and the A7RIII starts looking really good. Plus the D850 is REALLY heavy by comparison with a 24-70 F2.8 attached and much taller. I found it didn't fit well in my backpacks and personally I'm beginning to try to lighten my load so I appreciate how small I can make the a7RIII kit but that's more subjective as you may want a bulky camera with huge grip and the a7RIII requires the battery grip for that and still get's tight with big lenses. Also to get the high speed frame rates on the D850 you need to spend $1000 more on battery grips and D5 batteries and XQD cards. Also if you use lenses longer than 200mm often, you might have a tough time with the Sony lens lineup...at least until next year when more become available

      Dan Watson is sony more reliable? I have the a7 1st version and compared to nikon, sony a7 start up look unreliable. Sometime, i receive error when turn it on. Nikon on the other hand, it makes me feel like a real camera. How is the iso on d850 when the scene is completely dark and how is a7r3? Is color on a7r3 consistent at different exposure.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад

      It's tough to know about reliability this early. Hopefully by the 3rd gen things are getting better but who knows. Of course Nikon has issued recalls over their shutter mechanism on almost every recent camera starting from the D600 (which I had) so I wouldn't act like they have a perfect record either. In fact, rather than fix the D600 they refused to acknowledge an issue and instead released the D610 which was the same camera with a new shutter. I think they eventually were forced to issue a recall but I suffered for it and several other cameras had issues. I'll be testing the other items more when I have the camera for a longer period.

      Yeah, it went on a huge sale around black Friday and is still on it. Not sure if they will maintain that price though. From a quality perspective they are almost the same. The value is going be in real world use which for landscape photographers might be minimal but most others it will be well worth it. I shoot weddings and found the a7RII almost unusable without dual cards, better focusing, and decent battery life to name a few upgrades so the value is ABSOLUTELY there. But if you can live with imperfections in exchange for $1000 in savings, the quality is the same so the a7RII might be fine.

But I think the a7RIII would be a good upgrade from the D810 especially if you want a smaller/lighter setup and are interested in video...and it's the same price as the D850 so no worries there!

    Sony, to me, seems to be a company that drips out features in a way to squeeze the most cash out of their customers. For example, Sony landed the 6300 and then 8 months later released 6500. The new Z battery is another example, I bet that you will very soon see the next 6500 with basically only the new z battery added ( sorry 6300/6500 owners, go get the new one). I am a Fuji shooter, and my 1.5 year old X pro 2 will soon have a firmware to add 4K video as well as other features. Fuji just seems to be doing everything right by the customers. Just my opinion,,, Thanks

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 лет назад +13

      Really depends on how you think about it. You could say that rather than hold on to new tech for the next 2-4 year cycle, they just add it to a new camera right away which gets new tech in our hands much sooner. But yes, I do wish they would do more with firmware updates for things like the updated menus, improving the buffer, improving AF algorithms, adding slog 3...stuff like that. Fuji & Panasonic do better with that. I disagree that they are squeezing cash out of their customers though because it's not like you HAVE to upgrade for any reason. Your a7RII is every bit as good today as it was 2 years ago when you bought it so there is no reason to upgrade except that you now have the OPTION to access even better features IF you want so I can't see how that is bad for the customer other than maybe lowering the resale value of older gear and giving us major gear envy lol

      They react to strong competitors, for example this A7Riii early launch (compared to A7mk iii) is Sony Counter Attack to Nikon D850.

      I don’t think it’s a money grab, Sony really is investing a ton of r&d into these cameras and they want a return on that investment. But I do agree they need to support older models with firmware updates. There’s no reason why we can’t have the new color science in the 6300, 6500, a7r2 etc, which would really help these camera bodies retain their value on the secondary market.
