This was a job, got it in the end after about 1hr 1/4 of trying. Did this and the EGR clean. Another happy customer. Thanks again

Thanks for filming this - it was enormously helpful. I was able to clear the tube, but have a couple of suggestions for anyone trying this:
I was able to clear most of the pipe with perseverance but the very final bend in the pipe is tight and more than 90 degrees. I just couldn't get the wire round it. What I did was, on reaching this point, take a new piece of wire and use a pair of pliers to put a curve in the end of it. To give you an idea, my wire essentially wrapped 90 degrees around my finger. The overall length of the wire needs to be just about an inch longer than you can get down the pipe.
Now thread this curved wire down the (now otherwise clear) pipe - which should be possible with just your fingers. Position the wire in the chuck so that you've got maybe 1 cm of visible wire between the chuck and the end of the outer sleeve of the brake cable, and *slowly* rotate the cable as you press the cable assertively into the pipe. It won't bend too much because there's not enough outside the pipe and sleeve, and the curve will eventually engage with the bend in the pipe.
Now leave the wire in place, and shift the chuck another cm along the wire. Again you can put a good amount of force on the wire because of the short length, and it will continue into the pipe.
You'll know when the pipe is clear because the wire will suddenly move freely. Give it a slightly heartier spin as you withdraw the wire, wipe it, then repeat the process a few times (which should now be pretty easy).
After the pipe seems to be clear, leave the pressure sensor off, and rev the engine a little in idle before refitting it. You'll see carbon being blown out of the pipe as you do so - or at least I did. A couple of decent revs will will blast clear any loose material left behind in the pipe after the wire cleaning.
I found it helpful to use a bit of WD40 and later EGR valve cleaner. In fact, I left some sitting in the pipe overnight after I initially failed to clear it. I can't say how helpful it was, but the spatters of carbon and cleaner on the bonnet lid when I started the car meant it was clear the pipe was open again!
Finally, I spent some time trying to decide if there was exhaust blowing the paper when I did the test or whether it was just wind and engine vibration. You don't need the paper - there should be a healthy gust of hot fumes blasting up the pipe even with the engine idling - enough that you wouldn't really want to stick your finger over it. If you're not sure, then it's blocked.

Thanks for this. Tried cleaning for about 3 hours today and can’t get past the 3rd bend. Will try this tomorrow

This is the best tip I've ever seen on the internet for anything. I was able to fix my Juke following this guideline. I have to say it takes a little practice to get the length of cable and drill speed just right to avoid it knotting up or whirling too much. Took just over two hours. The pipe is just over 300mm long and the blockage was about 100mm long

Thanks Jim! I’ve had the same with my 2015 Qashqai 1.5dci only 35,000 miles. I followed your steps and fixed the fault! After cleaning out the pipe I reved the engine a few times and watched all the black carbon come out of the sensor pipe! I did have to nip to my local independent Mechanic to have the fault code removed and so far it’s not returned! Saved me a small fortune! If your ever in Derbyshire I’ll buy you all the Guinness you can drink! 🤣😉🍻

    Fantastic video Jim!
I have a Qashqai with 42k on the clock, followed your instructions , surprisingly hard going , the best advice I can give to anyone giving it a try is perseverance is the key , it takes a load of goes and it can be awkward with the brake cable .
I sprayed some WD40 down the pipe not sure if it helped of not .
I knew I was onto a winner when the WD started lightly bubbling out and then another few goes at it and it cleared.
When it is clean the air comes out a a fairly high pressure so you know that it's worked.
I bought a 20 quid OBD reader from Amazon which managed to clear the code.
Thanks very much Jim, you saved me a fortune!!!

First of all thank you Jim massively helped me out. Here’s how it went for me and what I’d recommend to others.
    Day 1.
Followed Jim’s steps exactly. I was at it for about 3 hours but couldn’t get it clear at all. Brake cable kept wrapping around itself, getting stuck on the pipe bends etc.
After reading some comments I realised that some qashqai’s have a slightly different pipe that has more bends in it. Mine happened to have more bends making the job harder! I tried some electrical cable to no avail. Day 1 and I gave up!
    Day 2
Bought some carb cleaner from screwfix for £5. Sprayed quite abit down the tube. Did away with the plastic outer of the brake cable and went directly into the pipe feeding it down. In and out multiple times, but still couldn’t break it clear.
***Top Tip which eventually solved the issue. ** - Force the brake cable down the tube as far as you’ve progressed. Snip the cable about 1 to 2 inch above where it comes out. Then attach the drill, turn and feed. Once there’s no more play. Take it out, spray more carb cleaner. Cut another bit of brake cable 1 to 2 inches bigger than your last and repeat process. Keep doing this and bingo! Will break clear and you can move the brake cable in and out freely. Turn the engine on and watch all that soot splurt out!!
I hope this helps people and thanks again Jim. You’ve saved me £100’s but at the cost of my son’s brakes on his bike! 😂

Jim you are a superstar. I tried with all different cables but the bike brake cable is the one to do it. Mines a Captur so difficult because of the scuttle panel to get the extension piece on the cable so I used a variety of lengths of cable and used the drill to push it down. Worked a treat and the crap that was blown out on starting the engine before i put the sensor back was unbelievable. Engine management light not come back on after 20 miles so fingers crossed. Thanks Jim

I've used this technique today, trust me if it's not loud with a noticable when removing the sensor it's definitely blocked, my advice would be go down to the point where it will go no more, mark how much wire has gone down remove and cut the wire to about 2" longer you will get a lot more pressure on it with the drill then just keep working up on the length of the wire once it's all the way in , great tip

Jim, you're a feckin' genius! Had a quote of over £400 from my local Nissan garage to fix this issue. Spent £2 on a brake cable and £3 on some ERG/Carb cleaner and it cleared all the gunk out. Very awkward to get to (my engine has the big plastic air pipe right in front of the ERG pipe/sensor) and it took me a couple of hours to complete it but it's done. Thanks again.

Greetings from County Cork. Great video. We did the same engine in a Dacia a couple of days ago. We checked the pipe with a small vacuum pump.As it wouldn't hold a vacuum we knew the pipe wasn't blocked, but when we're checking it next time we'll use your method with the paper. The fault with that car turned out to be a small rubber pipe to the dpf sensor cracked, buried down the back of the engine, so not an easy fix as it all had to be done using a mirror.

Thanks for this video helped in my diagnosis, in case this helps anyone else..... I have BMW X3 F25 2.0D 2017 model with the B47 engine. Had engine management light coming up intermittently, codes from Bimmerlink show codes 290b00, 28de00, 28ec00, 2ab600. I took off the exhaust pressure sensor and no air could be sensed coming out, removed the metal pipe that feeds this exhaust sensor and it was totally blocked(its a metal pipe on BMW) Managed to clean through using thin wire cable attached to drill as per this useful tip. All now OK. Thanks for the tip Jim.

Thanks for the video. Just done mine now, took a while (2+ hrs) with WD-40 and thin bike cables. Then when I hit bypass the blockage I revved up the engine and plumes of black soot came out. Errors lights went straight away. Nissan garage said it could be 1 of 15 problems and suggested working down the list until they disappeared (££££). Amber management light is still on, but I’ve read that will disappear in time. Thanks

Jim, please can you tell me how to remove the black plastic electrical block (the one with wires attached) from the top of the pressure sensor. It looks easy on the video but I cant see, or work out what to push or pull on the block to release it, and I dont want to break anything. There is obviously a little tab that one presses or prises witha screwdriver, but I have looked and looked and cannot work out how to do it. Thanks. John Collyer

I'm not sure I went the full distance? How much cable wire should be cut or go through? I tried this and had little success. I had wd40 foaming up then I'm guessing I opened it up as nothing was coming back up.

Hi mate, I had this issue a few years ago and resolved it by doing this.. I've just had the same faults/symptoms again recently so removed the pipe to my surprise the pipe isn't blocked!
Any suggestions? Could it be the exhaust gas sensor itself? Cheers

Really struggling with this...It just doesn't want to budge after the first 6 inches...I'm letting it soak over night with WD40...If anyone has any ideas about how to soften it up a bit I'd appreciate it...I'm using various cables with different diameters and outer lengths but pushing it just causes the cable to knot or stall.
