  • This is the first part of a series of videos I will be doing on the highly controversial Sega Classics Collection for the Playstation 2.
This collection came under such scrutiny by both professional reviewers as well as gamers. This is a collection of 3D remakes of some of Sega's most popular arcades. In Japan, these games were released individually at a budget price known as the Sega AGES 2500 series. 2500 stood for the amount of Yen they cost. Given the exchange rate that is between 20 and 30 bucks. THAT WAS JUST FOR ONE OF THESE GAMES!!! I'da been pissed if I had paid that much for one of these. However in the United States we got a collection of 10 of these remakes for only 20 bucks. That's much better. That's a real budget deal.
So is this collection as bad as they say? Absolutely not, but it does have a few serious disappointments built in. The graphics are sub par especially for the PS2. Yeah, they were budget remakes, but sometimes the graphics on some of these games can look like higher resolution N64 graphics (not exaggerating). However there are some games in here that look good, sound good, and play very good that makes this collection worth picking up.
First we're takin' a look at Outrun. A game that was cutting edge back in the day. IMO this game has been remade beautifully. It runs at a silky 60 frames and has great play control. One of the issues I had with Sega's revolutionary "super scaling" technology on their arcades is that it sometimes made your path hard to see and eventually make you wipe out. Now that polygons have been put in place of those scaling sprites you don't smash into rock formations due to confusion. The graphics in this remake are actually pretty good for budget visuals. The textures are nice a clean. The car unfortunately resembles the look of a BMW Z3 more than it does a Ferrari. They should have taken some lessons from Criterion on how to make fake cars look almost like real cars without infringing on copyrights. Oh well. The Music is out of this world. I absolutely love the arranged versions of the original songs. They're even way better than the remixed versions on Outrun 2006. All three songs are excellent. If you must have the original 16-bit tracks, those are also available.
Overall this is a good remake that is more fun to play than the arcade version IMO. Not only do you get the arcade tracks, but you also get an arrange mode which changes the gameplay a bit which is shown later in the video. You race against rivals and the goal is to leave as many of them behind you as possible. It is a nice edition to a very short arcade game. If you notice one of my rivals is a diesel rig. While incredibly ridiculous it was funny.

I'll take Out Run humming on the original dual 68000 processors that brought super scaling to life anyday. The Saturn still stands a the best home port. This version, while a noble effort, doesn't capture the same feel or charm of the original arcade. I maybe understand doing this version for a younger crowd who really can't appreciate the older stuff, but overall it's a bit of a disservice to a great game. It's a bit too much on the sterile side for my taste Sprites for life!

Out of all games in this compilation, which one do you think is the worst?

@GILakaGP3 The easiest way to tell if any game is going to work with the DF EX or the Mad Catz MC2 is to ask yourself one question. Does this game support the dual analog controller? If it does, it will work. If it only supports digital D-pad controls, these wheels will not work on those games. All PS2 games support dual analog.

@HSimon1981 what you mean by "for the PS2"?

VR & outrun work with steering wheel. It doesn't make any difference with VR stick with the pad. The opposite is true for outrun but it won't let you use a wheel at startup. You have to use a pad and hotplug a wheel.the game is really enjoyable with a wheel. But thanks to the stupidly strict checkpoints you won't be playing as long as you would like because the music is cool.

This is a pretty cool game for the PS2, I played it lot.
My best time in time attack is 5:05:31 in arcade course.

@GILakaGP3 Yes. I really wanted to like it too. I hated it because it was super glitchy. I paid 8 bucks for it brand new and returned it a few hours later. Yeah, that's right. It wasn't even worth 8 bucks to me...... plus I'm cheap. I even tried both the PS2 and XBOX versions. I just can't stand glitchy sounds and game play.
