Unfortunately because of my ignorance I only replaced the outer tie rod. A few months after the alignment I found that my wheel/s wiggle causing my car to swerve and there's a lot of play in my steering wheel and I am now replacing the inner tie rod to solve this issue. Great video.
WARNING! Do not EVER heat a ball joint or tie rod end with a torch! My father almost died from it. The grease inside vaporizes and when the retaining ring fails, it blows up like a shotgun. It was red hot and went through his right eye and lodged in his head for 4 hours......burning until they were able to remove it.
I actually loved this video and the individual! He was humorous and most important he hit the problems that you are most likely to experience with the job. I dislike videos that don’t show the potential issues and make it look like magic when it usually isn’t the case lol.

While you can mark where the tie rod was, and count the amount of rotations, the reason you would want to replace them in pairs is because you're going to want to get an alignment, and why pay for two separate alignments, because guess what? Your other tie rod end link probably isn't very far from needing replacement either
In my experience personally, you need to change all your front end parts at the same time. Including tie rods inner and outer, ball joints upper and lower, hitting on an alarm if you have those.
Agreed. Not only replacing outer and inner but doing so on both sides. With 260K miles on the original Toyota parts I bought OEM parts for another quarter million. Bought new boots, too. For $15 why not? And new sway bar links. The originals have been making intermittent noise on certain bumps for at least 10K. I'll take it apart once, fix it once, and get it aligned once.
Just what I needed to replace. Was actually thinking to do just the inner. But I might just end up doing it all after this video. Thanks. Solid stuff. Great content. I enjoyed watching, great sense of humor.
Typically, if the outer is bad, the inner will be as well, and if it is not bad at this point in time, it will be bad in a short amount of time. So, save some time and go ahead and change both, the inner and outer while you are in there. It should also be a good idea to change both left and right assemblies for the same reasons you mentioned and I also added to. After all, your suspension really is the hardest working parts on the vehicle.
Great video. thanks! My 18 y/o Dodge Grand Caravan is running great, but I need to change the entire suspension out. Going to check your prices out although quality matters the most to me.
Just relace both parts, doesn't cost that much more, and guarantees you won't need to go through the whole process again when the other one needs replacing, plus no need to worry about damaging the joint getting it off !
Im a broke ass college students and just decided to replace the outer tie rods only for $40 drives great, clunking is gone, just waiting until the whole steering rack gets worse and i have enough money to replace the whole thing.
Not only all the things you mentioned but you also need an alignment after. I know you said it but it was an after thought. An alignment requires you to take off work to take it some where and costa $70+ dollars to have done
I always leave the nut on backed off some what to protect the male threads on the tie-rod! All these stuck/difficult removal videos are due to improper installation?
Your video or amazing. Very informative and detailed. But don’t take this the wrong way. Comedy is not for you. Lol😂. But you can’t get better at something if you don’t try too. thanks for all the new video you make and for the knowledge that I’ve learn from your channel.
I need to figure out what seems loose under my van, it sounds like every part connected together is loose and the whole front rattles while driving on bumpy roads and parking in driveways
My van makes a few rattles too and I had it checked on by multiple shops that didn't see anything. It's 18 now with 156k miles. Going to change all of the suspension out.
The way Len's videos are trending, eventually he'll tell us to just replace all the parts at once, i.e., the whole vehicle. Then we won't need 1A Auto at all!
So, what if the outer tie rod won’t come off the inner? Even with heat? (I loosened the jam nut) AND holding the inner tie rod with vice grips - on the hex area - strips it?
so I came inside because I have the weight of the front of the truck sitting on the tie rod bolt because it wont pop off.... trying to figure out how to remove it.
You could use some rust remover gell and clean up the threads by the jam nut and then use a wire brush, then use some thread losoener spray, if after ll that you might use heat but using it initially is just laziness.
this is a bit of an extreme example , but if we were to change full sets all the time , we'd be shedding 1000's of euros every year , every 6 months . +1000's for the labour . No one will rebuild it's car , there is no point in burning 10-20k in a few years . Some parts have to be changed in pairs ok , but not everything .

My go-to channel for the best team of informational and personable professionals with some humor thrown in too!
Len always has a great vibe!! 😁

Good solid information!
And, use anti-seize!!!
By the way, I have learned from experience to replace both SIDES at the same time.
In my experience personally, you need to change all your front end parts at the same time. Including tie rods inner and outer, ball joints upper and lower, hitting on an alarm if you have those.
Man I appreciate You Guys! And all the info you give

+Randy Duncan Thanks for the feedback!
A1 makes nice videos. Professional layout and proper repair etiquette. Goes over common mistakes people make and how to do the repair properly.

Wow I started out watching you guys a long time ago when y'all first started putting videos on RUclips now look at you
Great video. thanks! My 18 y/o Dodge Grand Caravan is running great, but I need to change the entire suspension out. Going to check your prices out although quality matters the most to me.
Never actually showed how to replace inner rod.
you dont want to separate them if you are replacing both. you can put your new ones together next to the old ones getting the measurement exact....
Great advise
I love how you show us the right and wrong things. this is fun XD
Man I absolutely love your videos I think you're an awesome mechanic and I have learned a lot from you
you guys make the best vids
Very interesting and informative.. thanks for sharing
Crusty parts like that, I wire wheel whatever I am planning on taking apart first. That way you aren't running the nuts over rusty garbage.
Don't wirewheel anything near the brakes...that brake dust is toxic. Bet you already knew that. 😉
I have a 2014 Hyundai Elantra it has the electronic power steering right now the light for the skidding control, plus the abs brake !
Just relace both parts, doesn't cost that much more, and guarantees you won't need to go through the whole process again when the other one needs replacing, plus no need to worry about damaging the joint getting it off !
Nice video Replacing both only makes sense
Just replace both I did on a 2004 corolla I used the same boot because the new ones were too "new" to get on there!
Great teacher. Thanks for your detailed explanations
thanx bro thats was the problem loose tie rod from hitting it out the socket
Im a broke ass college students and just decided to replace the outer tie rods only for $40

Very useful, only best videos from this channel!
Ok. Fellows mecánico sanchez official send me here. Good video..

I had bad inner tie rods so I replaced the inners and the outers because...why not?
I need to figure out what seems loose under my van, it sounds like every part connected together is loose and the whole front rattles while driving on bumpy roads and parking in driveways

Very good video man.
Spray pb blaster on one day ahead on both jam nuts
I have a question. Is the tie rod end (outer) the same size on both ends on a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500?
You didn't list the tool showing at 0:02🤔
The way Len's videos are trending, eventually he'll tell us to just replace all the parts at once, i.e., the whole vehicle. Then we won't need 1A Auto at all!
Where did you get this vehicle from the bottom of the ocean 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I mean they are from New England, that's all the information you could ever need.
So, what if the outer tie rod won’t come off the inner? Even with heat? (I loosened the jam nut) AND holding the inner tie rod with vice grips - on the hex area - strips it?
Highly interesting
What do you do if the inner tie rod is leaking fluid?
Good video!!
I see everybody screwing the outer rod off by hand but it doesn't screw off that easily. how did you break it?
You did not show us how to remove the inner tie-rod, I want to know if that job must need a special wrench
This is how my outer tie rod job on Acura goes from $200 parts to $600 (inner and outer parts only).
What, if any, is the torque specs for the inner tie rod after replacing it?
The 2014 Hyundai Elantra still has the original parts from when it was built.and it has 97,738 miles on the clock.
Awesome tutorial/ information
Can't really afford both sides do I really have to change left an right side because just the right side is messed up
But will a torch really fully loosen a bolt bloated with rust?
How do you know if the inner tie rods are bad too
Why didn’t you show how to use the removal tool that free to use from part stores.
Why not give the torque specs for all
Lol bumper baby bumpers lololol
1A Auto!
Some inner tie rods are irreplaceable, they (OEM) unfortunately coming only together with steering rack set
so I came inside because I have the weight of the front of the truck sitting on the tie rod bolt because it wont pop off.... trying to figure out how to remove it.
Nice vid... #ToThePoint
Thanks
Is there is litle movment in tie rode end .???
Is it normal for new inner tie rod to be absolutely stiff
Parts are cheap. Why not replace the whole kit. I never understood
Mine is stuck .so how do you take it off without heat
You could use some rust remover gell and clean up the threads by the jam nut and then use a wire brush, then use some thread losoener spray, if after ll that you might use heat but using it initially is just laziness.
+chuck rafiki Thanks for the feedback!
No need to replace tierod end unless the balljoint is fkd 👍
you didn't show the clamp replacement. inner clamp is a PIA
Awesome
Good video
Never use zipties to secure the steering rubber boot. Ask me why
And get ones with grease fittings.
Why take them off at outer tie rod end, take the inner out with the whole assembly.
Gurl needs to get control of those flying hands and arms! Let's count how many times he says "of course!"
You didn't show how to remove the inner tie rod end. :I
He said shaft.
Ur awesome!!
This guy comes from the " Everyone gets a trophy" generation.
Any one can recommend me the quality of this parts
Replace it in pairs that way u don't have to go back in
this is a bit of an extreme example , but if we were to change full sets all the time , we'd be shedding 1000's of euros every year , every 6 months . +1000's for the labour . Did Len finally learn how to say veHicle. I always got a kick when he said veRicle.
If it’s rusted out yea replace it
Dang it
The best thing is not to let my wife drive my car .
🤔👌👋👍
