This wasn't one of my favorite shows, but moments like these were so very well done. Everyone except Killua being totally stunned by Gon's power and bloodlust, the music building as Gon powers up, Killua just calming stepping into the mealstrom of energy to put a hand on his friend's shoulder and calm him down before he inadvertantly murders Morel. Definitely a well done scene.
@patricktorres1292 I just really didn't like how little value human life had in that society and how no one seemed to care about that. Mass murders are just shrugged off if they're even mentioned at all. No real consequences for just killing a bunch of random people. Only time a death seems to matter is if it's someone a main character cares about. It's jarring with the otherwise more lighthearted approach most of the series takes with Gon on his fun adventure. If the show had been done in a more dark and somber tone that might be less jarring for me. So that's what kept it from being a favorite, because otherwise it probably would be. @@BlandoGaming I think that dichotomy is part of the point, though. Too often, shows like this are presented in a very strict black and white where the main characters you're following and their allies are "obviously the good guys" and everyone else standing in their way are "obviously the bad guys." The stark contrast between how the show is presented at the start as a typical battle shonen and what you actually end up getting if you stick with it had to have been intentional. Think back to the author's previous work with Yu Yu Hakusho and how Yusuke was basically just a delinquent with a spark of goodness and how that series began with him being a "simple" Spirit Detective... and watching that progress to the point you find out he's the descendent of a ruthless and feared demon that, at any moment, can just simply snap to the forefront and rampage all over again. Even his "foes turned allies" trope friends are ruthless and frequently uncaring in how they dispatch anyone standing in their way. I think he prefers to write these stories to subvert the usual narratives of this style and to show that "reality," such as it is, resides in a grey area and the morals of everyone, even the protagonists, are often not as pure and noble as one may want to believe at first glance. Even early on, Gon's tendency to blind psychotic outbursts and rash decisions has been hinted at before this moment and it all comes to a head against Pitou. It's the idea that even the "heroes" are just as selfish, uncaring, and monstrous as their narrative foes are is the entire point.
My problem with the show was that the universe is way too big. Full disclosure, I don't blame the writer.
