- On July, 15 2016 a faction of the Turkish Military attempted to overthrow the government. During the short lived coup attempt 246 people were killed, 179 of which were civilians. In the aftermath President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had thousands of members of the military and judiciary arrested, had at least 21,000 teachers fired or suspended, and shut down 2,500 educational institutions.

It always gives me goosebumps to watch unarmed civilians confronting heavily armed military machine. The bravery, unity and commitment of Turkish people is unmatched.

Seeing all those workers and students fighting the rebels while theh carry the turkish flag is one of the most emotional things i've seen, i am not a turk but the turkish people are one of the most patriotic people on earth.

No matter what, you have to admire the courage of those people coming out to the streets with nothing but their own national flag to abort a coup.
One of the crazy things about this video is watching the destructive power of military hardware. It almost leaves you breathless and shows what they can do in an urban battlefield.
This also made Erdogan much more powerful and he was able to consolidate power, now he's the only dictator in NATO.

I get what you mean, but this is in no way comparable to the Tiananmen situation. That was a government crackdown on a protest, while this is a civilian attempt to stop tanks from aiding a coup of the government, essentially a pro-government action.

Man you really have to admire the Turkish citizens, inspirational. Idk what the Coup was about or for what reason. But the citizens didnt get mad they just showed love, expressed how they where feeling and passively resisted, they even tried to have conversations with the soldiers about what they are doing, asking them why they are shooting at they're own citizens and trying to come to a peaceful resolution. It's amazing what people can do when they unite. I hope you all find peace happiness and prosperity. As an Australian I have always had respect for Turkey anyway after our troubled past in Gallipoli, A strong, brave and honorable country. ✌️

The Turkish Republic has (or had) a policy laid out by the founder of the country Ataturk that would grant the military the power to replace governments that tested the country’s democracy and constitution. The military saw Erdogan as an authoritarian threat to the Turkish Republic. However, the civilian reaction was probably due to the fear that of past military coups which had previously themselves resulted in brutal military dictatorships

Being a soldier I feel for both sides because as a soldier if you are given a command by your superiors and dont carry it out the consequences could be loosing your life and if you carry out those order like in a coup you face execution...damn rock and a hard place

In the USA, you swear an oath to defend the constitution and take orders from the president and officers appointed over you according to military law. If the order is illegal, immoral, or unethical as a soldier you should have the integrity and courage to hold your duty to the oath you took and disobey that wrongful order. It was fake and designed to serve as a purge of high profile individuals who weren’t loyal to Erdogan. It resulted in a consolidation of power by Erdogan loyalists.
Erdogan is a puppet to foreign powers and the Turkish population is forced into mandatory conscription to be used as footsoldiers for neocolonial foreign powers.

"Democracy cannot be stopped" That's now a moot point when Erdogan is consistently and persistently removing many democratic norms and becoming more like a dictator with every passing day. One thing is for certain, with Erdogan in charge, the chances of Turkey becoming an EU country are non-existent. And the more it isolates itself, the less prosperous it will be.

The EU has made it clear over and over again that it doesn't want to have Turkey in it, mostly because of anti-Muslim bigotry. the idea of Turkey joining the EU has been scrapped by both sides for a while now, Turks waited long enough Europe didn't comply, so the government looked in the opposite direction. This is Europes fault as well.
You know it’s heavy when civilians call for execution of the traitors. I was a soldier at that time stationed in Ardahan in the far east of Turkey. Soldiers who went to ankara were given orders to execute the president like how khadaffi and mubarek were executed. They used thanks to shoot the parlemental building in Ankara because they thought Erdogan was inside. Thank god he wasn’t.

@@brett4264 fair point. I was more inferring that there isn’t some talking head trying to explain away the situation. Just from what I gathered and based on the info given at the end of the video, the President of Turkey is/has been consolidating his power into more of a dictatorship. Which seems more than not to be the preferred form of government in these Islamist countries. That’s why I’ve always been against U.S. intervention in the Middle East trying to spread Democracy as usually either the populace of said countries don’t want it or don’t get it or both. They seem to love authoritarianism.

Man, I visited Russia during this time and did a layover in Istanbul. The day after I landed in Istanbul, but was already in Russia, the Airport had a terrorist attack. Then after two weeks in Russia, my return trip was through that same airport. One day after I was already home, Martial Law was declared....crazy two weeks in Istanbul.
Sadly, same thing is happening on Sudan right now.
I think people need to understand the political situation in Turkey. Ataturk who was the founder of the republic envisioned a secular and democratic nation and entrusted the safekeeping of democracy and secularism to the military. Previous coups in turkey actually restored democratic institutions. While I'm no expert on the socio political context of this latest one, we should realize that Erdogan does intact push the nation to conservatism and does act in autocratic ways...
And he's clearly popular because of it, not every country is like the West, Western style democracy has simply failed in most countries in the world

I get that maybe people want a more conservative society, im just saying that Ataturk established a framework for what he considered the modern Turkey to look like and then entrusted the military with the power to enforce it. So regardless of what I believe, I would say that the coup was not necessarily an irrational act, its entirely rational granted the historical context. Yet considering the inflation of the lira, the state of the Turkish economy, and Erdogans actions against press freedom and western allies, I think it could be better.

I think it's good to also tell the military reasoning. They are tasked to protect the democracy and the secular state as envisioned by Atatürk. They did that many times before and reinstated a democratic government immediately afterwards.
Erdogan is on a path to become a dictator. And all the values the Turks differed with from most of the Arab world are slowly getting lost. That's why they tried to overthrow Erdogan.

This is the vice news I found informative, I wanted to say loved, for the raw exposure of what is going on, but the loss of life, the slaughter of those people made me change my response. It would be disrespectful to those who died. Thank you vice for sharing this story.

Must be a very emotional moment
Backstory of the coup:
The Fetullah Gülen organisation is a religious extremist sect from Turkey. The sect exists since 1964. Over the years, they grew stronger and stronger. İn 1999, Gülen was to be arrested because of charges of infiltrating the state and trying to overthrow the Republic and replace it by sharia law, like in İran. He fled from Turkey and never returned back.
İn 2003-2013 Erdoğan and Gülen were actually cooperating with each. İn two separate courtcases thousands of Generals, Admirals, high ranking Police and many more were put into jail with fake charges.
Then, in late 2013 Gülen tried to overthrow Erdoğan by causing civil unrest. İt didnt work out. Now, Gülen and Erdoğan were split. Erdoğan brought out the innocent people from prison, although back then he had helped Gülen to put them into prison.
Anyway, now Gülens people were being cleaned out from the state. They had actually captured around a third of all the state we could say. They recruited their own men into positions in ministries, Police, Military and so on. Now since they were being cleaned out, the only way they saw was to do a coup.
That coup was done on the 15.07.2016. It failed due to a few big reasons: 1. They didnt manage to cut off internet in Turkey. 2. The commander who should have taken over the highest command position, was killed. 3. Only a small part of the Military was actually doing a coup.
The coup ultimately failed.
Gülen is a terrorist. He and his organisation tried to end the Republic twice. Their ultimate target is to make Turkey an İslamic Republic, so a dictatoship like İran is nowadays. Erdoğan today is an autocrat, but at least when hes gone we can return to normal. With Gülen, there wouldnt be a way back to democrcy for dozens of years
I hope that after Erdogan you get a capable leader who, together with the government can get the country on its feet again. Turkey has a big potential to be a both economical and a geopolitical superpower in the region but with Erdogan style of politics, which includes making as much as possible enemies, ruining relations with other nations, spending money recklessly in war operations outside of Turkey and basically destroying economy, the potential has been postponed for several years.

As someone that dislikes Erdogan. Purging the Gulenists is probably the best thing to happen ti Turkey in the past 20 / 30 years. And I'm terrified the opposition might be too lax on the issue if they ever gain power.
