  • Let Grillmaster Randy guide you through the ins and outs of Kamado Joe 3 Series grills! We’re checking out the Classic 3 ceramic grill, which has all the same features as the Big Joe 3 except for slightly smaller cooking grids. Speaking of those cooking grids, they’re made of durable 304 stainless steel and arranged in half-moon sections, that let you easily add fuel. The grids are part of Kamado Joe’s Divide & Conquer three-tier system designed to give you more cooking flexibility with different heat zones and a pair of half-moon heat deflectors. But what makes the KJ 3 Series truly innovative is the addition of the patented SlōRoller Hyperbolic Smoke Chamber accessory, which uses Harvard science to produce 20 times more smoke circulation inside the grill. In addition to its Advanced Multi-Panel Design, the firebox holds a charcoal basket that includes a divider and can be lifted out for easy ash disposal. With ample storage space and durable materials throughout, the Kamado Joe 3 Series has just about everything you could ever dream of in a grill!

    Below are more of the features we love about Kamado Joe III Series grills:
    - Thick ceramic construction helps maintain steady smoking temperatures
    - Convenient tools like patented ash collector and grate gripper

    - Kontrol Tower Top Vent built with powder-coated, die-cast aluminum to resist corrosion
    - Airlift hinge secures the lid and supports its weight for easy lifting
    - Lid-mounted thermometer
    - The cart comes with aluminum side shelves for placing items hot off the grill
    - Foldable side shelves have hooks for keeping tools nearby
    - The bottom section of the cart features a storage shelf

    If I were to buy the Classic III, how many racks of baby backs could lay flat on the provided grate? Now, what types of grate extenders are available to add more racks of ribs laying flat as well, and how racks of baby backs would the additional elevated racks hold? What I don't want is a rib rack device that holds the ribs on their sides.

    • @BBQGuys
      @BBQGuys  4 года назад +1

      I have put 4 baby back racks on first layer before, may have to trim them just a bit. The extender rack should give you space for another 3 racks of ribs. So you should be able to smoke about 6-7 racks all together.

    I'm tryign to decide between Classic III, Big Joe III, SnS Deluxe Kamado, and Blaze Kamado. Really might eliminate the Blaze as I don't think I can fit a blower at the bottom due to its vent design.

    • @BBQGuys
      @BBQGuys  4 года назад

      Kamado Joe comes with the included divide and conquer system and slo roller, which is a lot of flexibility out of the box. I haven't used the SNS, so I can't speak to that one but it does look like they have some neat accessories. Yes, Blaze Kamado is a different bottom vent so you are right about the temp blower if that is an accessory you want. Big Joe is sweet if you have the budget for it - fit some big 'ole briskets in that thing!

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn 4 года назад

      @BBQGuys I found out BBQ Guru does have an adapter for the Blaze bottom vent (I think you open the door like you were going to rake the ash out, then insert the adapter and attach the blower), so that's still in contention.

      @@encinosarah That's an apples / oranges comparison. The offset smoker will (in the opinion of most) provide unrivaled smoke flavor, but low and slow is really ALL it can do, and it requires way more maintenance. If you fill a Kamado's firebox with lump charcoal and get it dialed in to 225, you can walk away for 12 hours and it might have moved 2-3 degrees temp wise. Plus it's capable of a lot more besides smoking.

      @@praetorxyn Thanks for the reply. Have you seen the SQ36? It comes with a charcoal pan so that you can grill directly over charcoal. www.meadowcreekbbq.com/catalog/barbecue-smokers/sq36-offset-barbeque-smoker/

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn 4 года назад

      Sarah Scott I haven't - honestly haven't worked with any "rectangular box" cooker personally, or researched most of them, as in general I find offset smokers require too much maintenance and if I ever buy a Pellet grill it will be as a "when I'm too tired to build a real fire" grill. But it's still (at least I'm assuming, based on every non-kamado cooker I've seen) not going to have anywhere near the heat retention or fuel efficiency of a Kamado.
      I'm in the market for a Kamado because of its versatility on top of those two qualities. I feel like I'll get my money's worth when I can light it up when it's 20 degrees and the grill doesn't give a shit how cold it is, unlike the metal ones I have where I'd have to add charcoal regularly.
      I won't be buying until next year though; I have to put a new roof on the house this year 😐.

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn 4 года назад +1

      A pellet grill is only better when you're worn out and don't feel like dealing with an actual fire. The flavor won't be as good (though it still beasts gas). I'd go KJ3 all the way, as IMO it's much more versatile, not to mention playing with a real fire is fun.

    • @webmoss
      @webmoss 4 года назад

      praetorxyn with that being said, what’s your take on the Masterbuilt 1050? They’re owned by Dominus Capital which also owns Kamado Joe

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn 4 года назад

      webmoss I hadn't heard of it until you mentioned it. Obviously it's around half the price, so probably a good option if budget is more of a concern.
      But it's not made out of a thick ceramic or cast metal (Blaze Kamado is 1" cast aluminum and took 27.5 hours to burn 8 pounds of lump charcoal at 225 or 250, that's how long the temp took to drop and there were 2 pounds out of 10 charcoal left; haven't seen a test like that done with a ceramic).
      The primary benefit of a Kamado is heat retention. The material absorbs and holds heat incredibly well. So once you get the grill and dome soaked with heat it will cook very evenly top and bottom, and if you fill it and dial it in at 225 you can go away for 12 hours and the temp will remain rock solid. Another benefit to this is that it's pretty much impervious to ambient tempersture. If you get a Kamado going in winter, once it's heated up it doesn't give a shit how cold it is, same 12 hour rule applies.
      To mimic the "set it and forget it" behavior of the Masterbuilt or a Pellet grill, you can get something like a FireBoard 2 Drive (the Drive upgrade is cheaper than the fan control cable you'd need to buy to control a fan with the base model) and a blower fan (FireBoard also sells one), then attach it to the Kamado's bottom vent, and in the FireBoard app set a target temperature. It will spin the fan up or down as needed to control the oxygen intake of the fire based on the temperature of your grate probe. In fact, I think the newer Yoder Pellet grills use FireBoard control boards.
      I will say that based on what I've found, the gravity style smokers are supposed to give the second best smoke flavor next to offset smokers. But offset smokers can ONLY smoke. I would still prefer a Kamado just because I feel like it's more versatile than the Offset, and requires way less maintence during a cook. I'm not as familiar with the gravity ones but if the website's claims are true (set it and forget it for 8 hours) it's pretty good there, though if you ask me 10 pounds of charcoal being burned through in 8 hours is a lot. I don't know what temp that was at though.
      As a disclaimer, I don't own a Kamado or Pellet grill, but I'm in the market for one next year (have to put a roof on the house this year 😐) and I've been researching the hell out of them for the last month or so. I do own a FireBoard 2 Drive, but not a blower fan, as I dont want to cut a hole in my Kettle.

    • @webmoss
      @webmoss 4 года назад

      praetorxyn with that being said, I recently purchased the KJ II months ago. I like lump charcoal flavor and ceramic to cook in the winter. Looking in hindsight I should of got the KJ3 due to more features like the slow roller.
