I freaking love these opera summaries. Now every time I hear these songs from these operas my brain immediately goes to what the actual meaning behind them is... And in some cases it makes the songs very out of place where they're being played. I mean they had goofy sing a love song set to the tune of the habanera in the Mickey Three musketeers movie... If that's not hella out of place I don't know what is.
You think that's out of place, try the Muppets version. It's either going to be adequately kosher somehow or weirdly ironic depending on your mindset, but it's still a great adaptation.
The combination of funny and accurate translation alongside the IMPECCABLE singing is just phenomenal, so glad the unfathomable algorithm put this in front of my eyeballs ❤❤❤
Not only are you able to play the piano and sing in every range, you can also write songs that had me laugh out loud!! Hats off to you, can wait to here more xxx
I just realized that no one is talking about the fact that when he says “They like big butts and they cannot lie, you other brothers cannot deny” is a reference to the song by Sir Mix-a-Lot Baby got Back. How is no one talking about this?!
You have ruined me because every time I listen to Habanera now I instinctively start singing your version in my head🤣🫣🤣🫣🤣 I really am loving these types of videos though🤣🫣😍

@@cerebrummaximus3762I think there are videos where he did what you described, or came close: for instance, his version of "Oh mio babbino caro" essentially gives the message of the original despite not being a word for word translation. In Habanera, the original song describes how Carmen feels about love, while his version, to me, seems more focused on explaining to the audiece what's going on. Agree to disagree though, I'm not trying to pick a fight. All his versions are great and do a fantastic job at making opera more accessible.
Just found your channel- love it. You have joined the likes of Tom Lehrer, Tim Minchin and Randy Rainbow as artists I admire for their talent, wit, commentary and sheer entertainment value (I'm also an opera fan, so the Opera for Dummies series hits the spot 😊). I look forward to hearing much, much more from you 😊
I used to be in an orchestra (just 40-60 teenagers making a lot of noise really) and we also played the Habanera, and we were doing a concert together with an opera singer. Then one time during the break one of my friends said 'Did you know theres also a muppet version??' So ofcourse we watched the muppet version, and we were having such a hard time after that keeping a straight face playing that song. I just watched a gorgeous presentation of this song on RUclips a few days ago. The mezzo was amazing. All the performers were strong. And now YT gives me your brilliant piss take.
I sent this to one of my friends (she’s a classically trained singer) who performed selections from Carmen at a recital. She told me “Where was this when I was in school?!”

My 7 year old daughter is sick this weekend and she has asked for this video on repeat. She says that "you're awesome, very cool, and very talented." Thanks making beautiful things that can bring joy even amidst the flu!
I saw this on Facebook and had to immediately find your other content. You have a new sub. I love listening to different opera arias and I love when people find out that this very famous song is just a slut anthem. I wonder if you'll do the doll song from the tales of Hoffman. Its not nearly as humorous as this, but it is popular.
I've attended several operas over the years. Growing up, I had no idea what was being sung. Now, we literally get subtitles. And now I cannot wait to go see Carmen on stage and find out just how they do go about translation for the masses! 😂
lmao I can't see the song in the same light now haha (also, it would be awesome if you did an "Opera for Dummies" video for a piece from Giulio Cesare.)
But that is what this aria was about. It's not a literal word for word translation, so if it makes you feel better that is not what was literally sang. But the meaning conveyed is one-to-one.
