It’s been discredited by scholars, but I have no doubt in my mind that the whole “lisp” thing came from a king of Spain who couldn’t pronounce his words properly so now they sound like they have peanut butter on the roofs of their mouth

    • @lincuchilla
      @lincuchilla 7 месяцев назад +41

@-DRIP While that story might be funny, it's still fantasy. The actual explanation is a bit more boring. See, in medieval Spanish, what people now pronounce as /θ/ used to be pronounced /dz/ (couldn't find the exact IPA symbol). For example, in the word "plaza" the z would've been pronounced like the one in pizza. That being said, I just want to say that a lisp is a speech impediment. And Spanish people do make the difference between /θ/ and /s/.

    • @BankruptMonkey
      @BankruptMonkey 11 месяцев назад +48

@@tttITA10they also use more formal language than modern speakers do, so even in the original language it sounds stuffy. Consider, Shakespeare is constant sex jokes and sick burns, but people treat it as formal and boring because it's in an older style of the language.

Hey! Here's the actual translation if you're interested:) (I made it might not be absolutely perfect)
    L'amour est un oiseau rebelle
    Love is rebel bird
    Que nul ne peut apprivoiser
    That no one can tame
    Et c'est bien en vain qu'on l'appelle
And it's in vain we call for it
    S'il lui convient de refuser
    If he desires to refuse
Rien n'y fait menace ou prière
No matter if we threaten it or pray
L'un parle bien l'autre se tait
One speaks well the other's quiet
Et c'est l'autre que je préfère
    But the other's my favorite
Il n'a rien dit mais il me plaît
He said nothing but I like him
    L'amour est enfant de bohême
    Love is child of bohemia
Il n'a jamais, jamais connu de loi
    It never ever knew laws
Si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime
If you don't love me, I love you
Si je t'aime prends garde à toi
    If I love you beware!
    Prends garde à toi
    Beware!
    Si tu ne m'aimes pas
    If you don't love me
Si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime
If you don't love me, I love you
    Prends garde à toi
    Beware!
Mais si je t'aime, si je t'aime
But if I love you, if I love you
    Prends garde à toi
    Beware
    L'oiseau que tu croyais surprendre
The bird that you thought surprise/startle
    Battit de l'aile et s'envola
Spreaded its wings and flew away
L'amour est loin tu peux l'attendre
Love is far, you can wait for it
Tu ne l'attends plus il est là
When you'll stop waiting, it'l be here
Tout autour de toi vite vite
    Everything around, fast, fast
Il vient s'en va puis il revient
It comes, it goes then come again
Tu crois le tenir il t'évite
You think you hold it, it avoids you
Tu crois l'éviter il te tient
You think you avoid it, it has a hold on you
It's originally in French! Written by Georges de Bizet from a book by Mérimé
