WTF Happened to COLIN FARRELL?

  • To say Colin Farrell’s career has been unique is an understatement. He was famously discovered by Joel Schumacher, who cast him in 2000’s Tigerland; his good looks landed him a place at the top of Hollywood’s A-list, starring in Minority Report, S.W.A.T, The Recruit and more. But, it was his acting that made him a favorite of directors like Michael Mann (Miami Vice), Terrence Malick (The New World), Oliver Stone (Alexander), Woody Allen (Cassandra’s Dream) and more. As far as his stardom went, the only issue was that these movies were expensive but not terribly successful at the box office. Thus, for a few years, Farrell took on a couple of dubiously commercial films, such as the disastrous Total Recall remake, that didn’t work.
However, when he was making those movies, he also starred in Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges, which was perhaps his best role to date, and people took notice. So even if he looks like a heartthrob, he has the skill and range of a character actor, and it's in this role that he’s excelled in the last few years, starring in great movies like The Lobster, The Killing of the Sacred Deer, Widows, The Gentlemen, After Yang and, of course, The Batman, where he plays The Penguin. Join us as we take a closer look at his career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity.

Don't bullshit yourself. Colin is incredibly hit or miss with his performances. He's the actor that usually stars alongside someone better than him in execution and craft. For example, in Miss Julie and Ava, Colin was completely outshined by Jessica Chastain. Most recently in The Batman, even the most basic performances of the cast stood out more than his (and Matt's) bland rendition of The Penguin. He's a bit like the Triple H of cinema; just occupying space with bigger, more skilled stars.

The make-up in films can be arduous and long... I watched a few actors that also talked about hours spent with those make-up artists. One of more interesting was with John Hurt who was talking about the Alien, about hours spent on that table where the alien is bursting from his chest... But, he was a classically trained thespian, he had no problem lying there for hours for making that legendary scene.

@@JoBloOriginals That's good, keeping things positive. But I have to ask, have you considered changing the show's title? Maybe something like "A Closer Look at ..." or "Why We Enjoy ....." ? Just a suggestion. I expect you get a lot of grief about this particular series because of what it's called.

I am honestly a huge fan of Colin Farrell. I didn’t used to be, I actually really disliked him for many years during his early bad boy phase. I think I saw him in The Beguiled or The Lobster 4-5 years ago and was SO impressed! I really respect and appreciate the creative and ballsy choices that he’s made in this phase of his career. He is incredibly talented.

I like him but not enough to offset how much I don't want to watch the movie based on trailers
