- Colonel Osvaldo Fernandez was one of the few Cubans who actually knew what was going on at the time. As a young liaison officer, his job was to follow the Soviet troops to the various sites where their deadly nuclear missiles would be installed, to save Cuba from a US invasion. 45 years on Colonel Fernandez meets with Russian general Victor Yesin, who pays a last visit to Cuba, to see the place where he served as a young lieutenant in charge of putting the warheads on the missiles.

In the fall of 62 my husband was a meteorologist hurricane hunter, in the Navy, stationed in Puerto Rico. They were checking on a disturbance to watch for hurricanes, in a C121 in the Caribbean. They received a message to change directions and take photos of a Russian ship thought to be in that area. They were to take the door off, and put a net over opening, for photographer, to lay out on,to take photos,as they banked the plane over the ship. The photographer was a large man and had concerns about laying on the net to take photos. My husband volunteered to do it. As luck would have it they found the ship, and the bay doors were open. My husband got photos of the nukes that were being transported to Cuba. The Russians on board were on deck smoking. They flew the plane about 100 to 150 feet above the Russian ship. The Russians were shaking their firsts and shouting but, my husband got great photos.
Lol
Wow! You and your husband are a part of American history......I hope you passed on this story to your posterity ......thanks to your husband from a life long history buff😎👍
Wonderful thing. Thank you.
@@richardsegura8117 Cool story. Not long after your husband took those photos the US Army installed four Nike Hercules Air Defense Batteries in South Florida. They were dismantled in 1979.
Great story...god bless your husband...thxs to him and the kennedy administration im here today...
My left ear really enjoyed this
I've been watching for 30 minutes hella confusedwith just my right ear bud in. Thank you so much for this comment 😅 wow I was confused why there was only music and birds playing
Just take your earphones out and stop complaining
lmao 😂
I've been using my right ear bud. What's wrong?
My God I love Cuba so much .... my wife and I have been there so many times we were told Cuba should just adopt us
As Cuban I liked this documentary.I'm glad I was born after that mess.I must say Soviet people were good to us.We kinda needed it ,Cuban government always been inept.
Thank God I don't line in Cuba. Your government are nothing but communist dogs.
@@billyashworth7393 You're right .I've been living in United States Of America about 3/4 of my life
@@pulser445 your lucky your there, many cubans tried and were killed
Here we are in 2022 and ever so close to this situation.
Amazing!! Thanks. I read *Six Days* and RFK says that there was a last second decision to tighten the blockade to 500 nautical miles rather than the original (I think) 1000. This gave Kruschchev the ability to turn the Russian ships around, otherwise the ships couldn’t have been turned around in time.
Vasili Arkhipov saved ALL OF US!!! It's a shame that 99% of people have no idea who he is. That man should have a worldwide recognized holiday for him because there's an extremely likely possibility that a gigantic portion of the world's population (maybe almost the ENTIRE population) wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for him.
true.
But on a side note...am I the only one who really disliked the Cuban officer in this documentary?
He is acting like a complete douchebag.
The russian colonel on the other hand acted all cool and normal.
Seriously that old cuban officer made this unwatchable for me.
Nuclear War probably wouldn't kill most of the world's population, if you taken into account the reduced yield that's happened because of nuclear disarmament the vast majority would survive a nuclear exchange and even the fallout wouldn't kill the majority of the rest.
Don't get me wrong, probably billions would still die and it would be the single greatest disaster in human history, but to say that it would kill most of us is an over-exaggeration
The invasion of Cuba ( The Bay of Pigs; was a brainstorm of the CIA during the Eisenhower/ Nixon Administration due to Castro takeover. Not JFK.
Th3 CIA had ties to the US Mafia that had been making a fortune in Cuba under the puppet regime of Batista. While there still were some C7bans that did not want Castro, the vast majority were for him. So the mis calculation by the CIA that this invasion would with the help of the locals to overthrow Castro was doomed to failure. That Castro made a deal with Khrushchev, made him a puppet of the USSR. It was due to a nuclear accident in a Soviet submarine that Arkhipov was on board that caused him to, as commander of the submarine fleet sent to Cuba, to prevent a nuclear war.
@@AeneasGemini at the time both the US and the USSR had sufficient arms to destroy the world 25 times over as part of the premise of Mutually Assured Destruction. The balance of power was very delicate. The biggest difference was that while Moscow had the full command over such nuclear uses, the US could work with independent commands if a missile hit Washington DC.

These docs are the best!
Doc's fine but how did you manage to record mono audio in 2021?
A historic moment! Don't you dare question it. lol
This was a very interesting post perspective of what happened as told from the Cuban and Soviet view. Very good video. It shows how fragile peace is.
yes but the cuban officer was extremely obnoxious ...and why did he had to mock that farmer's father for goodness sakes ?
@@eval_is_evil It was difficult to read the captioning. But yes why did the colonel make such a comment. I am sure you noticed that the general showed more respect for the dead at the monument to the Russian soldiers that died.
@@eval_is_evil because thats what communists do. Thats how they operate. Its like they are also tryin to convince themselves that their actions are somehow justifiable.
Rather BEST CHANNEL and as ALways Play the Perfect Documentary in history,
THAT OLD (CHEV OR FORD) TAKES ME BACK TO THE SIXTIES👍LOVE TO HAVE ONE NOW😊(ps) REMEMBER WELL THE CUBAN MISSLE CRISIS......WAS 15/16 YRS. OLD IN ALASKA

I would love to see you do a documentary on the Nike Hercules Air Defense System in both USA and NATO.
Nice historical video and introduction of witness
I was a 12 year old boy in Denmark by then, tensions was high, it was all over the news, and everyone was scared.
I'm glad that it faded out, but it was a close call.
Thanks to Timeline and the to old comrades.
Russia had only 2 ICBMs ; Kennedy knew that. Cuba had six.
We have repeat the history again folks, look at the news around us.
*Hello. Could you please make a documentary with the neglected people in Europe. For example, Cigan (Gypsy) and Roma people in Hungary, Slovakia, Czech and some other parts of East Europe are more abused and neglected than you can imagine anywhere in the world?*
Two generations of Cubans have been deprived of the fruits of progress. Tragic!
Conventional wisdom has taught us for the past 60 years that JFK’s the biggest hero, he’s still a god. The Cuban missile crisis, doesn’t matter what it is. If it’s JFK, he’s brilliant, he’s the best, he’s great, it’s Camelot. Howerver, 1982, Mary Beth Norton and several others took a very different approach in a college textbook widely used today in Advanced Placement courses. They said Kennedy ‘pursued civil rights with a notable lack of vigor.’ They blamed him for the missile crisis, saying Cuban-Soviet fears of invasion were stoked by the 1961 Bay of Pigs landing and other United States moves against Cuba. They said Kennedy’s real legacy was ‘a huge military expansion that helped goad the Russians into an accelerated arms race.'”
So in advanced placement courses in America universities from 1985 on, Kennedy is blamed for the missile crisis; Kennedy is blamed for the Soviet arms buildup because of his numerous efforts, starting with the Bay of Pigs, to invade Cuba.
Yes, and those textbooks neglect to mention the fact that if Kruschev hadn’t said his goal was worldwide socialism, and that they would bury us, and they were turning missiles out like sausages. Kennedy might not have felt threatened by Cuba. Yes it was. Cubans invaded Cuba not the United States. I don’t care who backed them and who trained him.
First! .

Obi Wan has taught you well.
Thus us choice fush und chups eh bro?
They stirred when the USSR put a nuclear pistol to the temple, and the Soviet Union lived with this pistol since 1945!

Khrushchev, according to everything I've ever read.
These guys were lucky Kruschev blinked.
Super
60yrs ago and it's still thier no wounder they are so poor
@@degamispoudegamis crazy how one country can do that too another you think Russia would help them since thier the ones that put them in the mess in the first place
The Cubans thought they had a chance lol.
i love marsten matt
Yes
Russians blinked. Ultimately they imploded. They wanted their MTV.
No truth in that whatsoever. A deal was done between the Americans and the Russians that prevented it. And that was Russia would remove their Nuclear warheads if America removed their Nuclear war heads in Turkey. Saying the Russians blinked first in nothing more than a myth.
@@MrUnbling 100% true and Kennedy had to promise no invasion of Cuba and to leave Castro in power, that happened and a Castro still rules Cuba
Repeat the situation again, seems some people never learned their lesson, if USA have “Monroe Doctrine” why can’t the Russian Federation have their own set as well??!!
What about the rockets In Turkey that US installed before the Soviets in Cuba.
Those missiles were obsolete..and were in turkey for a long time..they weren't placed there right before the missle crisis took place..that's a lie...the missiles in turkey were to be dismantled anyway but not under duress by the Soviet union.. know what you're talking about before posting it
I wish I could go about my business and listen to the documentary because I don't have the time to sit and stare at the phone. I'll look for other documentaries on this.
Is It True Cuba Makes The World Best CIGAR?
Fortunately the time of the red bloody faction is over ♥️♥️
Well dun.
Dont worry Bidden will rectify the mistake. He's just itching to start something with Russia. God help us

how come you don't give credit to the people that you steal the documentaries from?
My grandmother and her sister were in Siberia... In a concentration camp.
No point in watching this if I can't listen to it while I'm working... #timeline
I m sure it’s will more around USA mainland today , best to keep in peace around the world ,no need to worry about nuclear
Rather specialized. It involved the whole world, you know. This could have been so much better. It's history. You don't personalize it as though it's a movie. You lost me 9:26 in.
What about missiles from turkey
Bad audiomix!
Why add an unnecessary introduction by a ballerino wearing skin-tight leotards? One rather expects he'll perform a Tour en l'air.
There was LOT$ of RU$$IAN MONEY IN CUBA BACK THEM
Very bad don’t waste your time
unfortunately I have to agree
This seemed to unnecessarily glorify the Soviets and Cubans involved... Not a fan.
I love the Cubans
dear god I cant watch this anymore the Cuban officer is obnoxious ... why in the world would he mock the farmer's father ? Was that really necessary ? 😠 Communists and fascists act alike. I see no distinction in their actions to be quite honest and history confirms it.
You dont see distinction because you are a clueless m*ron, the communists were the ones who defeated the Nazis.

All I can say is:
Viva la Cuba, Viva Castro, Viva la revolucion!
