  • Colonel Osvaldo Fernandez was one of the few Cubans who actually knew what was going on at the time. As a young liaison officer, his job was to follow the Soviet troops to the various sites where their deadly nuclear missiles would be installed, to save Cuba from a US invasion. 45 years on Colonel Fernandez meets with Russian general Victor Yesin, who pays a last visit to Cuba, to see the place where he served as a young lieutenant in charge of putting the warheads on the missiles.

    In the fall of 62 my husband was a meteorologist hurricane hunter, in the Navy, stationed in Puerto Rico. They were checking on a disturbance to watch for hurricanes, in a C121 in the Caribbean. They received a message to change directions and take photos of a Russian ship thought to be in that area. They were to take the door off, and put a net over opening, for photographer, to lay out on,to take photos,as they banked the plane over the ship. The photographer was a large man and had concerns about laying on the net to take photos. My husband volunteered to do it. As luck would have it they found the ship, and the bay doors were open. My husband got photos of the nukes that were being transported to Cuba. The Russians on board were on deck smoking. They flew the plane about 100 to 150 feet above the Russian ship. The Russians were shaking their firsts and shouting but, my husband got great photos.

    Amazing!! Thanks. I read *Six Days* and RFK says that there was a last second decision to tighten the blockade to 500 nautical miles rather than the original (I think) 1000. This gave Kruschchev the ability to turn the Russian ships around, otherwise the ships couldn’t have been turned around in time.

    Vasili Arkhipov saved ALL OF US!!! It's a shame that 99% of people have no idea who he is. That man should have a worldwide recognized holiday for him because there's an extremely likely possibility that a gigantic portion of the world's population (maybe almost the ENTIRE population) wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for him.

      Nuclear War probably wouldn't kill most of the world's population, if you taken into account the reduced yield that's happened because of nuclear disarmament the vast majority would survive a nuclear exchange and even the fallout wouldn't kill the majority of the rest.
      Don't get me wrong, probably billions would still die and it would be the single greatest disaster in human history, but to say that it would kill most of us is an over-exaggeration

      The invasion of Cuba ( The Bay of Pigs; was a brainstorm of the CIA during the Eisenhower/ Nixon Administration due to Castro takeover. Not JFK.
      Th3 CIA had ties to the US Mafia that had been making a fortune in Cuba under the puppet regime of Batista. While there still were some C7bans that did not want Castro, the vast majority were for him. So the mis calculation by the CIA that this invasion would with the help of the locals to overthrow Castro was doomed to failure. That Castro made a deal with Khrushchev, made him a puppet of the USSR. It was due to a nuclear accident in a Soviet submarine that Arkhipov was on board that caused him to, as commander of the submarine fleet sent to Cuba, to prevent a nuclear war.

    • @walterulasinksi7031

      @@AeneasGemini at the time both the US and the USSR had sufficient arms to destroy the world 25 times over as part of the premise of Mutually Assured Destruction. The balance of power was very delicate. The biggest difference was that while Moscow had the full command over such nuclear uses, the US could work with independent commands if a missile hit Washington DC.

    Conventional wisdom has taught us for the past 60 years that JFK’s the biggest hero, he’s still a god. The Cuban missile crisis, doesn’t matter what it is. If it’s JFK, he’s brilliant, he’s the best, he’s great, it’s Camelot. Howerver, 1982, Mary Beth Norton and several others took a very different approach in a college textbook widely used today in Advanced Placement courses. They said Kennedy ‘pursued civil rights with a notable lack of vigor.’ They blamed him for the missile crisis, saying Cuban-Soviet fears of invasion were stoked by the 1961 Bay of Pigs landing and other United States moves against Cuba. They said Kennedy’s real legacy was ‘a huge military expansion that helped goad the Russians into an accelerated arms race.'”
    So in advanced placement courses in America universities from 1985 on, Kennedy is blamed for the missile crisis; Kennedy is blamed for the Soviet arms buildup because of his numerous efforts, starting with the Bay of Pigs, to invade Cuba.

    • @mikealvord55
      @mikealvord55 2 месяца назад

      Yes, and those textbooks neglect to mention the fact that if Kruschev hadn’t said his goal was worldwide socialism, and that they would bury us, and they were turning missiles out like sausages. Kennedy might not have felt threatened by Cuba. Yes it was. Cubans invaded Cuba not the United States. I don’t care who backed them and who trained him.
