ok this song was made famous by the Legendary Blues Man John Lee Hooker, that's why he says "I took my John Lee Hooker record collection and out the door I went" John Lee Hooker's grooves have been used in modern day rock a lot, ZZ Top's song "LaGrange" is totally lifted from John Lee's song "Boogie Chillin". This song is why I got into the blues. I heard that name, looked it up at the record store and I've been hooked ever since. Good Work Guys.

Man, first off, y'all are a super charismatic couple and seem super fucking cool. Thank you for this one. I knew the reference from this song from the Eric Church song "Record Year" that y'all also watched. Then, funny enough, Bill Burr also references this song on his podcast when he talks about an older white lady who messed up the lyric (said something like "one whiskey, one shot, one beer)...I had never heard this song before, and really enjoyed it, and you all's commentary (especially the "because i got high" shout out). Thank you, great content as usual!

This is actually a cover of two songs, both by John Lee Hooker. The first is House Rent Boogie the second is One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. That's why he's singing about not seeing his baby throughout the second part of the song. He's not upset over the rent because that was actually a different song.

This version is actually a medley of two songs. The first section, before he goes to the bar, is "House Rent Boogie" by John Lee Hooker. The actual "One Bourbon..." song is everything after the singer goes to the bar. John Lee Hooker also did a version of "One Bourbon..." although the original, with a switched order (One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer) was written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milburn in 1953.
George Thorogood is an interesting guy. He, like many players, learned to play by copying songs from records. Unlike a lot of players, he instinctively understood not only what the songs should sound like, but the styles of the players. John Lee Hooker, for instance is far different in style from Howlin' Wolf, who's different from Buddy Guy. The thing that makes Thorogood so unique, especially in his early albums, is that when he does a cover, it sounds a *lot* like the original because he understands that player's style. It's still a George Thorogood cover and is unmistakably his, but it feels like it could be of the era of the original.
