By nature of definition it is the coward who is capable of the highest heroism. You’re misjudging him he is the best of example of humanity at its best
With his tone during his death, sounds like he went out with a smile, happy that he died with a purpose. Bittersweet is the closest we can get to good endings in Dark Souls it seems, same goes for Ivory King.
@Julio Cesar personally love the story for Anri . Helping her with Aldrich and saving her from the pain of her companion turning hollow and then putting her down afterwards to let her rest. Bruh these games stories have such great voice acting and fantastic lore its addictive
@Age Of Plankton also for us (the player character) our driving force is to complete to game whether kindling the fire, leaving it to fizzle out, turning into a Lord of Hollows or helping create a new painted world ; we always have had a goal in mind. For one to go fully hollow is to either lose sight of their goal or complete it . For us the game is over after completing the game. Thats why we can constantly respawn and yet others we kill will not. Their death from our hands makes them lose sight of their goal
@Julio Cesar I went with the path of her going hollow, for one simple reason. This way, she (I'm a male Ashen One) can get justice on the monster that claimed the lives of so many and bring about closure for both herself and Horace. Being a slave is no way to live, as a hollow or as your puppet. I told her where Horace was after killing his hollowed form and then I killed her hollow form that was next to the memorial she made of him. May they both rest peacefully.
I personally think that Hawkwood is the one of the most human characters in Dark Souls. He changes what he believes in constantly because of his lowest points in his life and it only makes sense that he dies at the place he started. I open at the close.
"By nature of definition, it is the coward who is capable of the highest heroism, for his obstacles are the greatest of all." That's a really powerful line...
@Daniel W But how is he called a coward if he was already showing signs of courage?? if a man flies and faced his fear of falling, does not this make him courageous??
@@Accomplish305 a coward who becomes a hero does more then a hero because not only must he overcome the same challenges but he must also overcome his own cowardice.
@Daniel W Thanks for the explanation.. I still did not get this philosophy completely but since it's not a critical subject so let's conclude by saying that Hawkwood's story is a little bit sad..
I like that hawkwood is essentially the anti-crestfallen warrior from dark souls 1. Both the crestfallen warrior and hawkwood had essentially given up when we meet them. Both of them are cynical and scoff at others attempts to claim greatness. But the difference comes what they did when they do see someone suceed. When the crestfallen warrior in DS1 realises that you indeed suceeded where he and others failed, he realises his cynism and apathy just made him look even more useless than before and just gives in to depair and goes hollow. Hawkwood however realises that all that cynism was misguided and it its time he just gets up and does something about his situation and starts striving towards a better fate. People always talks about Dark souls series as depressing and hopeless. But i love these stories about undeads that fights for a purpose in a bleak world. Thats what being human is all about after all.
What are you talking about? Crestfallen Warrior doesn't give in to despair--he decides he's sick of Frampt and he's going to do something about it. His literal last words to you are "Maybe it's time I do something about it… " He clearly hollowed in New Londo, which reflects that he moved from his spot. Had he just 'given in to despair', you would likely find in him Firelink Shrine. Both Hawkwood and Crestfallen get up to do something they believe in and both fail due to their weakness. Hawkwood is certainly more noble, though Crestfallen Warrior's ire towards the Kingseeker serpent is interesting. This is the same snake that's extolled you as some great chosen one--maybe Crestfallen sees through the so-called Kingseeker's plots, just as he was keen on so many other aspects of what was happening around him.
And then the Cresfallen Warrior in DS2 gives you a ring.......... and that's it. I mean. If you make the right choices he gives you TWO rings. But still.
I know your comment is old but the dark souls world is depressing but so many others are to warhammer fantasy and 40k stories of great empires that have fallen or are falling, either stuck in one place while slowly crumbling to dust and its all because of some human emotion greed, arrogance and so on. On the other hand we read and listen to the stories of the people who would not give up and fought and fight on in an endless fight that noone sees an end to but they fight on and on and on for something they desire a dream or perhaps just the hope of a better future has they face impossible ods.
Hawkwood is just a pessimistic newbie Souls player. He leaves Souls after learning the lore and seeing how depressing it can be. Then learns he can become a dragon.

@@DabroodThompson Same for me. I don't get the hate this is getting, and ironically the DS1 remaster dispelled a lot of it. It's like the nostalgia goggles were finally knocked off.
The thing that always gets me with Hawkwood... his cynicism is correct it seems. Just look at the good, proper ending of the game. You do it. You defeat the lords of cinder, you defeat the soul of cinder, you actually link the fire... and the flame barely crackles any higher or brighter. Compare that to Dark Souls 1 where the entire room was rapidly engulfed in a blazing flame of magnificence. All of that, all of it... for what? Delaying the inevitable by a few more hours? A few more days maybe?

I love how his voice gains a fuller, more masculine sound when you challenge him at the Abyss Watchers arena. I didn’t notice he lacked his shield. I read online that he takes your dragon merch if he kills you, which is pretty awesome.
And ironically, in his desperation to carve a piece of history for himself, I suppose he finally did: “Hawkwood, the last member of the undead legion.”
"I'm a deserter I know, but I've still plenty of fight in me!" After watching this video this has become one of my favorite lines in the series. I especially love the placement and timing of the line in the video coupled with the music playing. You made a line said by a man in anger after being attacked into something truly emotional
When I dueled him, I was wearing the Undead Legion Set and wielding the Farron Greatsword. I figured that, for this once proud Abyss Watcher, there could be no more honorable a death. RIP Hawkwood
This is, for Real, the best one of these you've ever put out. Perfect length, fantastic script, and amazing visuals. I'd be so happy with any more done this way.
I let Hawkwood take my dragonstone so he could achieve dragon-hood. I became the lord of hollows so Anri would still have purpose and left Horace in his pit so that he could enjoy the solitude he sought. They deserve whatever peace can be given to them.
Shit I'm too late for marrying Anri as the lord of hollows, but if I let Hawkwood take my dragonstone, is there any other chance to get another one? Or would I have to wait till new game plus??
This truly deserves the title "Prepare to Cry". Hawkwood is one of my favorite DS3 NPCs next to Lady Elfriede and Siegward. Dark souls has the best stories.

god Gwyn, WHY?
I just noticed that and I am dying
4:37 to 5:58 is the most beautiful gaming-related thing I've ever watched here on RUclips.
Thank you Vaati.
"An artoriasly difficultt task" - what a beautiful way of putting it for us nerds to understand :)
bahaha my captions said "a notoriously" but seeing this warmed my heart
I love how his voice gains a fuller, more masculine sound when you challenge him at the Abyss Watchers arena. I didn’t notice he lacked his shield. I read online that he takes your dragon merch if he kills you, which is pretty awesome.
"...to be alive is to be vulnerable..." an astonishing Madeleine L'Engle Quote.
That's why I love Prepare To Cry!
And ironically, in his desperation to carve a piece of history for himself, I suppose he finally did:
“Hawkwood, the last member of the undead legion.”

I never used a shield in DS3 (my first Dark Souls game)
I did use a shield though in DS1 since I played it on a laptop, keyboard only.
Great video, great merch. Ever since I started souls, crestfallen was my fav boi so this makes me connipt hard vaatiCry
I haven't slept in 28 hours but I'll stay up a little longer for this video
Amen
Why not lmao
@@alisen8557 ya I was up with homework and work right after I watched this I went to bed
5:30 did you just parry him with your back against his face ?
Need to do some extra flex on that unworthy dragon lol
Yeah I was like, DAME the old side bash and stab. Had to do it to em.
In the end. The casul made him his bitch
This truly deserves the title "Prepare to Cry". Hawkwood is one of my favorite DS3 NPCs next to Lady Elfriede and Siegward. Dark souls has the best stories.
I really like the symmetry of how you first meet the abyss watchers and how you brought hawkwoods story to an end.
Good shit vaati.
Good Gwyn. Vaati you get better and better with each next video. Is there someone better than you at telling stories that almost no one see? THERE IS BLOODY NOT EVEN ONE!
And I'm going to buy that T-shirt. Or all of them.
YOU make me to play Dark Souls... and i'm grateful for that
I agree with you strongly. Vaati is just a great story teller
me mum told bedtime stories ye those were the best
I could’ve sworn I was watching a movie. Masterfully done as always.
Nice!

So you tried your best to fix your mistakes from the past but failed miserably as your best was not even nearly enough and then in the end you just accepted that you're a failure and become a nihilistic asshole?
Me too Hawkwood, me too.

"You are a dragon more dragon than I..."
When vaat makes a new prepare to cry episode. PRAISE THE SUN!!!
I cried as soon as I clicked.
you don't even have time to prepare to cry
Ah, I see what a convincing spy you are.
Don't blow my cover

Aw I never knew that Hawkwood was the guy you had to kill for the twinkling dragon torso. That is actually pretty sad.
This is imo (to date) your best work, it's a cinematic masterpiece. The music scores so well with your brilliant script. The in-game dialogues complete it so well, not even to speak of this immaculate camera work. It must have taken weeks of work to complete this homage. But complete it is, well done
Hawkwood was my favorite NPC in DS3 because I really felt for the guy and when I finally had to face him, I let him have the dragon stones for I wanted to believe that he could have a happy ending.
He had a happy ending, he died fighting.
It’s so nice to see a youtuber making an effort to sell merch with a sick design like that. just ordered the premium white hoodie , looks so sick.
Hawkwood was one of my favorite characters from Dark Souls 3, the general nature and growing the character shows as you progress. An arse, for sure, but essential to a lot of really nice lore points that helped put in motion the ideas of the world.
The fight against Hawkwood was so well done. Some of the best editing I've seen
Though you have told me again, and again in the titles of your videos, this one I was not prepared to cry.... but I definitely did. Absolute amazing work on such a tragic character.
finally a youtuber that understands that i don´t want just a big fat name on my merch, but a cool design, which is only on the second or even on no look a merch. also i loooooove your vids. everytime i get goosebumps and even if i know the story, the feelings no one can deliver as you. : )
*pulls bag off Vaati* "keeped you waiting huh"
You're pretty good
Unkindled?!
I've waited years for this Lore...
It was worth the wait. Love the content Vaati. Thank you so much for this video!
How about a lore video on the Mad Cainhurst Hunter and Eileen The Crow not much was ever done on it it would be open for many interpretations
I know right? No one seems to talk about the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst, and yet he’s easily the hardest hunter fight in all of Bloodborne
@@jamesbell1186 he gave me fits it's such a great fight Hunter vs Hunter he's almost like fighting another player
@@jamesbell1186 i always see him as a member of the sable church.
Black garb, silver helm, also the rune looks like the yuri's sword.
Thats my theory anyways. I always believe that bloodborne and the "dreaming" hunters are just people from what the current usurped world of dark souls.
After all, aldrich's visions are very accurate. The new painted world is borne from Gael's blood tainted by the dark souls.
The inhabitants also transform into monsters based on emotions much like how the abyss corrupts and how ariandels painted world rotted.
Paleblood = blood tained with the light soul. At least to me.
Funny. Dark soul is about the sun and bloodborne is about the moon.
@@wanderingbufoon this black garb is the crow hunter set, people completely separate of the church. he wears cainhurst armour and uses their weapons too.
he was likely just another crow hunter who felt entertained by the hunting of hunters and joined the cainhurst warriors to have another excuse to hunt people.
@@jynxed66six54 In other words,a fellow hunter of hunters who became drunk with bloodlust, breaking his vow to the hunter of hunters oath and painting two targets on his back: One of the executioners, should any still remain, and one for the hunter of hutners.
These videos are incredible. The Souls lore is so enigmatic, the puzzle pieces so like easter eggs, that one comes away with only the vague impression of the story as a glue to bind the gameplay. The hidden truth is so much greater and I can honestly say that your exposition enriched these games twofold to me. Thank you.
will there ever be a story about the soul of cinder?
No.
the soul of cinder's story is the entire story of the dark souls series
I'd love to see one.
@@Robertward111 Then play the fucking games.

Please do a “prepare for cry” of Lady Maria and Gherman.
By the way, i love your stuff, thank you for doing such a great job with this awesome stories
Idk why he doesn't do more Bloodborne stuff, it's free content that'll probably get a lot of views
Holy heck this is so well put together... the story telling, the building soundtrack..
I'm really curious which song that is
Your mentality behind your merch line is something i love and something that other youtubers NEED to copy from. Simplistic merch with just a logo or a name isn't creative or interesting, but a unique design with references to what the channel is about and something only avid fans would be aware of is something that needs to be done more.
Although please put something small on the front if you deicde to make more merch, and keep making hoodies! By god, the lack of hoodies is what gives me the most conniptions!
Can we just appreciate the cinematography from 4:36 onwards? Such Art. Well done Vaati!
I never wanted to kill Hawkwood, when I met him in Farron I was like "sure, take it", but sadly I didn't have the option to do it, poor soul.
I never realized just how sad everything about dark souls is in general... Damn.
VaatiVidya, I had an idea. You should do a Prepare To Cry video on Eygon and Irina of Carim. I think It would be a good idea because of how it ties in with the story line, and what's in store for you when you do the questline.
There is just something about this video that brings me back to watch it over and over.. the music/pacing/story.. i dunno, but i love it.
The video aesthetics were off charts. Man you really edited it good. Loved it.

As an active internet consumer since dial up and aol, I have a total of 5 youtube subscriptions. Vaati you consistently produce high quality videos, with each being seemingly better than the last. Most being emotionally moving in an era where innovative nuance and originality is not easily achieved. I am buying a sweater, which is a big deal because I hate logos. Carry on, you amazing bastard. I’m not crying.
For most people, it may not be that much of story. For me, I have been pretty much depressed and failed at most things. Watching this video inspired me to at least be better, strive for success rather than just sit around and do nothing.
I got depressed because of college. So no biggie.
