I am recently retired and happily getting back to pencil sketching after many years of absence. I found out I can still do a decent sketch and decided I'd paint a small mural on the end wall of my hall. WRONG! Despite watching hours of online painting videos, I can't grasp how to transpose a pencil sketch to a painted picture, whether on a wall or paper. I finally came across this video and am so excited! You speak in SIMPLE TERMS, all along explaining WHAT you are doing, WHY you are doing it, and what it WILL ACCOMPLISH. I've subscribed to your channel and can't wait to watch more of your videos. You've given new hope that I can save this project from the jaws of disappointing defeat. God bless you for sharing your talent, your gift and your experience...........(PS- DON"T STOP "TALKING TOO MUCH" as noted in another remark. Your verbal explanations are what makes your videos so excellent! "What, why and how" is the basis of all learning, and the more you explain, the better you impart your knowledge, especially to new enthusiasts. Less verbal explanation would make your videos like any other and take away what makes them special and more effective.)
I LOVE the simplicity of your color palette, how normal speed your videos are and how helpful and thorough you are in describing what you are doing!!! I wish I could add a photo to show you my first attempt at painting water!! Thank you!!
Joe, thank you so much for the step-by-step thought processes combining what, why, and how. That's the skill of a true teacher. The behind the scenes in your mind helps one to understand and apply, rather than copy a demo. You can pass on the benefit of your experience; this lends hope to practice that I can creatively express what I envision. I don't want to be bound to models. I like the way you think too: methodical, detailed and objective. Praise be to your almighty designer. May you continue in good faith.
Thanks for continuing to post the free videos. Helpful things in every single one. Loved seeing more of your muralist work. Very much appreciate the insights on color, form and the true nature of light.
Your so talented, these rocks are realistic looking. It amazes me how you turn a flat surface into a giant 3D painting. Thank you so much for this informative video!
You have a wonderful gift of teaching that has helped me on my painting journey! God bless you and your family- God is using you to touch the hearts of people you will never meet:)
Dude you're my role model. Not only are you aesthetic. your color control is superb. I need more idols like you in my life, please sustain my inspiration with your smile.
Joe your work is a great help, I also work a lot with acrylic reproducing paintings, when I have some doubt I see the videos to achieve other effects in the finishes, thanks!
I loved watching you paint the rocks. I’m working on a painting now with boulders. As it turns out after watching your video I’m using the wrong color. You make it look so easy but I love creating rocks and boulders!
You explain and paint with such practical advice! You're work is so amazing! I would love to be able to be anywhere near that good! I've oil painted 7 years or so, and i overwork each one to death. I'm glad to see you approach painting without having to THINK so much about it, and get right to it and still come out incredible.
Awesome as usual Mural Joe. I really enjoy your style and hope to get a little more realistic in painting some day like you. One of the first things I bought when I started my mural business, was a rolling cart. You should thing about it yourself so I don't get tired just watching you bend over so much! ;-) Thanks for the vid!
Thank you Joe. I am in Flagstaff for half the year. I do portraits, so appreciate these tips! Did you paint the sunflowers at Cedar House Coffee Shop? Beautiful too. Kelley Jean B.
Dude Joe, I've been painting for a few years now, I'm also studying art in school, but I always learn something from your videos, and this one is no exception I like your color theory and how you mix..that rock color was nice! Keep up the great content!
I'm always so afraid of putting bright colors on the canvas, especially for something like a rock lol, but I keep coming back to this video to show myself that it's ok, it's just paint! Your instruction is very much appreciated.
Hi, Joe. Very, very nice! I have a question. How do you prep the surface if you need to do a painting on a cement outside wall? Thank you for all your work! Many blessings!
Hello, Joe! I always watch your videos. I admire your talent! You make magic very easily and fearlessly. I respect your work! You give me inspiration. Sorry for my bad english. I live in Belarus.
Wow, I was just in need of something like this! You made me realize how to paint people, and now I got stuck on making a rock texture since it always looked like a playdough mound, hopefully this helps me, wouldn't be the first time!
Can I make a couple of suggestions? First, that you watch this video. The reason being, when you were painting the first rock addition, there were a couple of places where you could have left it. One being, at one point, you have a rock with a very flat, diagonal, surface. That would have been what I would call, a good sitting rock. Then, you changed it, and it had an indent in it. It looked like a rod had been forced through it, similar to what you might see when they are separating granite, or, marble. Then, you changed it. The change was good, but, before the changes was good, too. I know that you are very busy and probably don't have time to watch your own videos, but, I thought I would make the suggestion that you watch this one. Perhaps you could use those rock ideas somewhere else.
I love your lesson...it's very informative and easy to follow...1 question..you're painting a large surface...why not you use a larger brush?..does it have to do with control?
Kia ora joe you da man alrite i was watching this vid awesome by the way nice work and when you where painting what happen to the two doors on the side lol?
Hi Joe... Thank you for the video :-). I wonder what you do when you dip the brush in the paint. Do you have some sort of palette or do you just put the brush directly into the bucket of paint... if you do that... doesn't the colors mix too much at some point?
I have a question that I cant seem to find the answer to anywhere!!!! I figured if anyone would know, it would be you. How do you paint objects transparent or glass like that typically are not transparent. For example, how would you paint animals or creatures to look transparent or glass like? This could make a very cool and helpful video because no one can find any ideas or help on this idea anywhere! Thanks so much!
When it comes to blending you mentioned always having a wet brush and lots of paint on the wall. I noticed you sometimes also have a dry brush to soften edges. Is that another method you use a lot?
Hello Mr. Joe.. How are you.. I am a beginner.. I have a query... how do you make same color again after mixing two color.. I tried but result was not same..
You don’t need boring school. Just watch Joe. He teaches from his heart. His tool is his passion. And how he selflessly shares this special talent which I call a “gift”from God. I call it a gift because it’s something that was given to you for you to give away. I can feel that when he speaks. Joe I don’t know if I’m more amazed in your awesomeness of your knowledge of art or how your mind sees it and interprets it scientifically and its complexity you break it down in layman’s term for your audience to absorb. Not to mention his humbleness. And the best part I don’t think he’s aware of it. He’s just authentic to watch! Now if I can absorb it!!🥴
Know More Nothing, I have the same issue. I think lots of Artists do, however I don't think Joe knows exactly what it will be. He starts out with a blob and it evolves. It just takes imagination. You just need a general idea and let it evolve.
Tamara Figge ive tried tutorials.Hundreds of hours of youtube videos on drawing. Practiced thousand and thousands of sketches. For example i will redraw a figure several hundred times in every position and angle. Yet i still cant draw anything freehanded that resembles a figure/person or object. i spend 4 hrs everyday,8 hrs a day on weekend and 14 hrs a day on my days off just drawing. i will draw a circle, rectangle or other shape thousands of times within a week. then i will shade all of them from all 360 degrees of light sources. They say practice improves your skill yet ive been stuck at inability to draw freehand. its like my brain gets overwhelmed with all the information. when i go to draw as soon as i focus on the paper to draw whatever i see in my mind disappears. If i trace outlines i can shade a drawing in hyper realism. I remember in high school most of the class who never even drew before ended up drawing better than me by end of the semester even though i had 10-12 years of practice. how am i to improve my drawing ability if i forget what i learn the next day? even if i repeat the process thousands of times. I started doing art again recently and i gave up a year ago becauae i felt like im getting no where. my freehand drawing ability is equal to that of a 10 yr old. Even if i have a reference photo i cant freehand draw it. as soon as i look away i forget what im looking at within a fraction of a second. it feels like everyone else has some magical talent that allows them to see things in their head and put it on paper.even people who have never drawn seem amazing to me when they do a sketch. is there something wrong with me?
I'm not a pro or even intermediate but I can advice you to forget about theory when you try to place your thoughts onto paper. Make a scetch and then use it as a reference for your drawing but with applied theory. @ And have less self-criticism.
I don't know for sure what you meant, but I take you are insulting Joe and anyone who needs instruction on painting rocks. So, if you're so superior and you find this so simple that it's demeaning, then GO AWAY, and let the rest of us enjoy and appreciate what he is offering.
"you speek to much". You are SO WRONG! His verbal explanations set his videos apart from all the others and make them special and much more effective. Perhaps you are a gifted artist who doesn't need to hear the "what and why" of each detail. Those of us who are beginners or are struggling NEED and APPRECIATE and THIRST for the verbal instructions.
Hola!!! From Colombia. 3 years ago I saw this video and I am watching it again!! 👋👍

3 years ago. And I still learned a ton. Great illustration and inspiration. Rocks and Mountains are my favorite forms of nature to paint. Thanks bro
Shapes great so realistic but the colours are blending in beautifully .
Flagstaff AZ! I miss that place. How awesome you get to make a living sharing such gorgeous work in a gorgeous place. (NAU alumni)
I LOVE the simplicity of your color palette, how normal speed your videos are and how helpful and thorough you are in describing what you are doing!!! I wish I could add a photo to show you my first attempt at painting water!! Thank you!!
Beautiful, I love the way you paint such large spaces. You are a wonderful teacher, I enjoy watching you turn a blank wall into magic every time!

Hello! If a potential client was too far to travel to, would you consider painting on metal canvas and shipping your artwork to them?

How long time you did this project?
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
The Best Teacheeeeer! !!!!
Thanks
'For older painters amongst us, I'd suggest putting my paints on a table to avoid bending down so much.
Yup my back hurt just watching it
Yea, he'll get there, we all do.
U ever varnish?
Good
What if ive been drawing and practicing for 20 years and still cant freehand draw? whats wrong with me?
