I didn't expect much when I clicked on this but oh my god was I wrong, this is amazing.

This is the University of Texas. They are known for high level musicianship. The person playing the main melody line has a Doctorate in Tuba Performance! I would bet that half these guys are getting advanced degrees in their instruments. You would be hard pressed to find better.
James Matheson, Jr. yea but it’s also not like if they recorded this using a normal mic on a. Classroom, you can tell they added quite a bit of reverb to it and it was recorded in a pretty acoustic room. I’m not saying this was bad, it was really
Good, it’s just not what it seems?
Hey, stop saying God's name in vain. He sent his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for every single one of your sins, including the one you made from this comment. Jesus Christ loves you, so please repent and turn to his grace. He's coming very soon!
@@chrisleromans5845 Amen to that
They went down tuba river to play
*badum tssss*
Sigh. What are we going to do with you? XD
Very good...very good.
Tuba or not tuba
Ethan Sandres and euphonium
Imagine a film score where a majority of the film uses a symphony orchestra, but the most impactful moment of the film uses this exact arrangement. I would really love to hear that. And I've also got to represent euphonium. The euphonium is my favorite instrument to play. It is beautiful. I'd love to play in a euphonium/tuba ensemble. My goal as a composer is to give the euphonium a permanent spot in the symphony orchestra. There will be lots of amazing low brass parts, but truly beautiful euphonium parts.
Wyatt Wahlgren e
You're a composer
@Wyatt Wahlgren Just a brazen reminder to pull all euphonist to watch the anime Sound Euphonium because it's the most love the instrument is going to get in any media, ever
@@VersusThem 😂 Honestly too true.
Unless you add the British brass band tradition...you can hear some pretty fantastic compositions played by outstanding Euphonium players
a
Yes!
you just did.
the cinematography is insane !
it beats the hell out of the shitty audio quality
Gurantee it's just your speakers or headphones, the audio quality is very good, maybe the reverb is a little much but keep your opinions to yourself unless you're qualified to say so, thank you =)
Hypnotic! I could listen to this on an endless loop.
uh, yup. I think I been dooin that already too .
exactly what i was thinking!🎧
Me 2
I started on trumpet in 1968. My profile pic shows me playing baritone horn in step with Dr. Howard Cleave in 1970. I then went to valve trombone, played a little tuba and sousaphone, but I’ve been a slide trombone player since 1974. That is what keeps me alive! I hope you all can be as fortunate as I have been with the so-called low brass instruments!
normantrombon 😂 i started on trumpet too and switch to euphonium
@@menacevang605 me too. :)
Howard Cleave started me on trombone, OMG, in 1951 (age 9). Wow did I have a crush on his daughter Trudi!
Friend: So what kinda music do you like?
Me: ahh well it's complicated.
My friends think it’s weird too, your not alone👌
@@sarahpotter1928 I just have fellow band kids as friends 😝
@That Guy, nothing complicated for me at all. The tones of both instruments just wash over me, and I love it❤️. What a lovely combination . Now subbed. Thank you and best wishes from Cornwall,UK
No its not. You like good music 🎶
@Axlerod Horowitz I play baritone saxophone and I am interested in EDM
You guys need to do more videos. I have been playing the tuba for seven years and the euphonium for two years, and have found this video to be a huge inspiration to work harder than ever. People don't understand how beautiful the baritone and tuba can be when you put some effort into it.
Kevin Sallwasser omg ikr. Us tuba players are so underestimated
*Euphonium
Yes so true, praise the lord
Max Ramos it’s actually a baritone. A Euphonium looks WAY different.
yeah because most bands just force them into bass lines only
Those dynamics though.. this shows how they matter! I am a percussionist but this is amazing!
brysonlane12 Right on. I'm a percussionist too. I couldn't agree more. You said it. It's amazing.
Percussionist says this can't be beat! LOL
@@colesisler582 same dude. This right here is beautiful. It put tears in my eyes.
eyyy percussion fam!! 🥳🥳
Agreed I'm a percussionist as well
I watched this for the first time like two years ago, and I've listened to it probably 20 times since. I play euphonium, and it's my favorite ensemble video out of all I've ever seen. I never paid attention to who made it, but today I noticed that it happens to be the college I'm attending next semester. I'm now looking forward to UT more than ever.
My daughter plays the tuba. This performance first opened my ears to hear and mind to slightly understand what an expressive, the most human and solemn at the same time this instrument really is. I do admire you the conducter. Pharsing could'nt be more beautiful. When listening to something like this, one realizes a bit more what a valuable thing this life of all of us is. Thank you.
Maria Eskelinen 8ub
Dang... you hit me hard with that
I remember shocking my mother when I started playing tuba. I fell in love with the soul that it can portray. I used to call it the brass bassoon. Highly underestimated yet powerfully expressive. I miss my tuba. Hopefully I'll get to pick it up again after college.

Simply stunning! Way to go, folks! I am a band instructor in Canada, and with the terrible shut downs of our world because of the Covid 19, I have shared your delicate, reflective and heartfelt of this with all my students, and our staff. I have found myself completely drawn to this performance for the last two days. It is a message of hope and beauty for our world.Way to blow apart the stereotypes of low brass players!!
High notes at a slow pace on tuba is such a blessing to the ears.
Dang. If the tuba euphonium ensemble in my college played like this, I may have actually enjoyed sitting through all those concerts. Definitely beautiful instruments, but often terribly misused/underused.
Our tuba/euphonium ensemble always played arrangements that were voiced poorly for the low register, rarely making use of the upper range of either instrument, resulting in what sounds like a bunch of non-pitched rhythmic ‘farts’ much of the time. It’s a shame that was my first/only exposure to the ensemble for years. Anyone else experience this with collegiate tuba/euphonium ensembles?
I co-teach the tuba/euphonium at Oregon State University. We usually do mixture of original compositions and quality transcriptions and arrangements. We sometimes incorporate percussion or feature a soloist. Making full use of the range and color of the instruments is so important!
should've used string bass. just a better tuba in my opinion. def not biased :)
If a player masters or spends considerable time on their low range on a euphonium or tuba, it doesn't sound bad or like 'farts' at all. It can actually sound quite beautiful :) I think there might have been a misunderstanding of what style of play is required for each part of the instruments' registers.
It really depends on how you play the horn in its respective registers you may have a B flat tubist play the really dark deep low tones that bring this piece to life. And then have say an F or an E tubist Master the higher range on the horn and then you’ll have something cooking and may not even need the Euphonium if played to perfection the Tuba can do everything the Euphonium can but better I played Tuba so I may be biased😂 but it’s a melodic nature the “farts” you stated may be from the player themselves making mistakes and not having a proper foundation on how the instrument can be manipulated in the lower register this is definitely a Legato piece which are my personal favorite
I’m super late, but as a trumpet major in college I see it go both ways. Euphonium is an incredibly beautiful instrument that can bring so many different colors, but I’ve seen that here in Texas at least among younger players, the kind of blasty or “farty” marching band tends to be very common. I think it’s very important that younger low brass players are exposed to all the different uses of their instruments and how to play more than just simple bass lines. Love your channel btw Erik!!
I started playing tuba when I was 12 and whenever I watched this video and listen to how beautiful the tuba can sound I never let go of my tuba ♥️
keep with it bud, you'll never regret it
for me to be a trombone player
hearing this song actually made me shed a tear
It's soooo freaking beautiful i love the tone quality and verbrato of the Euphonium and especially the Tuba
This is easily the most incredible small ensemble I have ever heard, and I've been playing in and listening to brass ensembles for 20 years. Five years later I'm sure most of these players have moved on, but i still want to offer them all a heartfelt thanks for this magnificent performance. I wish there was more.
As a tuba player myself, this is the most skill I've ever witnessed on a group of individuals. Each one can do without the other, there tone is harmonic, almost one.
That soloist is the literal god of tubists besides Øystein Baadsvik
Cole Lambrix what about greats such as John fletcher, Patrick harrild, les Neish etc.....
Them too,
Øystein Baadsvik is crazy good, like its close to not even human have you heard Fnugg by him?
I recommend Wilfried Brandstrotter. He is a god on tuba.
Øystein Baadsvik is better tho
as a first year music major studying tuba performance I am 1) in awe 2) inspired as hell! and 3) just a little bit intimidated by that incredible tuba soloist!!! kudos all around, y'all are awesome
This was in my recommended so I decided to click on it and I wasn't disappointed.
Might be two years late but this video (the cinematography and music) will remain timeless. Bravo!!
A horn player myself, long ago, this rendition with low brass is a wonderful thing to have stumbled upon. Thanks guys. The COVID-19 lockup becomes more bearable when music like this can be heard and my Texas rivers brought to my screen. Thumbs up, a bunch of them from a once upon a time low brass musician.
I have listened to this piece for hours. So beautiful and mesmerizing! Thank you for this!
Isaac Zefo same and i am a tuba player
Same here Isaac. I'm a 70 year old tuba player. I believe these musicians touched the heart of God himself.
Yes Sir, they did!
Listening to this makes me want to be a better tuba player
same i am a tuba player
Now if only someone could design a synchronize swimming routine around this. Simply gorgeous. And kudos for sure to the cinematographer.
Very good, Rich!!
Makes you cry, in a good way.
Bring me to tears every time i hear this 😍
That last chord is so awesome. It's sounds like an organ.
Nick Cavallo pretty sure I only hear one voice playing the third of the chord and the rest is the most well intonated stack of perfect 5ths I’ve ever heard
Am I dumb but what’s a chord
@@waltermccord550 is when diffetent notes come together to make a good sound. jk there are some cool videos out there that explains

This is so good I can't stop watching this , I've watched this like 9 times , it's so relaxing , and makes you think how beautiful the world is
This is one of my favorite songs ever and I never thought a tuba and euphonium group could pull this off. I literally cried listening to this because I want to do this so bad.
Hi Charlie

This needs to be on Spotify so more people can appreciate it!
I stopped everything I was doing, and did not move one single inch until this video was over. I'm sitting here in my room in tears because of the beauty that just came out of my speakers. This song holds a special place in my heart, and the sweet sound of brass made it even better.
Now this is true ear candy, thank you for sharing, this is a keeper.
The audacity of this channel to upload this absolute gift to the human race and never upload again :(
Best performance of this song ever! In my opinion. Beautiful work guys, Bravo!!
This account really just dropped this banger and left
Drop dead Gorgeous. Many thanks from me and everyone in the Kirkland Choral Society, Kirkland, WA
51 people are angry woodwinds
Thomas Donald I thought the same exact thing
Or guitar players
Thomas Donald or high brass
I mean they’re angry because they can’t produce this on a small scale
I play both guitar and saxophone.. but holy shoot I never knew low brass could sound this amazing
How did I stumble upon this Video? no freaking clue, but so glad I did.
The beauty of our instruments. This is one of the few songs that can really showcase how deep and beautiful the low brass can sound. It seems like the low brass never gets the melody. The wood wind instruments sound light and soft like a fairy, and it is beautiful there’s no denying that, but the Richness and smooth dark metallic sound that a tuba or a euphonium has is a different type of beauty.💖🎼📣
well said 🤝🥲
When I listen to this I start to cry because of how beautiful it sounds
As a Tennessee boy, this reminds me much of the wonderful and great Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble founded by Winston Morris. Texas and Tennessee - together showing the broad and melodious capabilities of the tuba and euphonium! BRAVO!
Thanks for mentioning them, gonna watch out for their performances now
If I could give it two thumbs up I would as a tubist and euphonist. I haven't played in a few years, but I still love the sound.
I play French horn and I this makes me wish I could learn tuba just for this, or just get this as French horn music.
I was a Horn player then I heard this now I play Tuba
😂 I’m a euphonium player and I wanna play French horn ;-; but still play euphonium
Tuba is pretty easy. People don’t expect much of you and the only struggle is the amount of air you need.
I'm 55 years old. I used to play various sizes of clarinet and saxes in my teens and twenties. I also dabbled with flute for a few months a few times. I know from the fingerings of those instruments that some notes are played with the exact same fingerings on all 3 families of instruments.
I would figure the brass would be the same thing to some degree. Am I incorrect in that presumption.....???
You could always get a Wagner tuba as an in between of the two instruments. It uses a horn mouthpiece but give easier access to the lower ranges the horn can’t usually reach.
This peace is the mostly wonderful I ever see in my holy life, God bless you!
This is unbelievable... crazy good... You guys can hurt somebody with this... or maybe just heal cancer or something...
The music was great, but seeing 5 euphonium players in the same room was also a treat!
You have a specific euph and tuba studio???? My highschool has one euph player (me) and one tuba player and you have a special place where they all go? Im jealous.
emo leader well this is a music college
most colleges have a low brass studio, although this one in particular is going to be really good (Texas is the band state).
TheBareFootBandit Being a tuba player in the state of Texas and almost made the All-State band, this is an incredible piece of music and it sounds absolutely amazing.
Same. I was the only euphonium player, and we had one tuba player. Now, we just graduated. Our wind ensemble gets an entirely new section of completely different people next year.
This sounds like a song that would be played in Heaven. I love you Jesus Christ.🕊❤️
Beautiful!
Sometimes, it is nice to be reminded that humans can do amazing things. Thank you so much for this wonderful piece of music.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! I’m in tears.
I hope at least some of these gentleman were able to move into a professional career with their respective instruments. I've been coming back to this since it was posted...
Clay Garett, the tuba soloist, is currently an tuba/euph assistant professor at the University of Texas
@@tiffanytan557he teaches Tuba and Euphonium at TCU!
John Flores was my band director in middle school! He's one of the best directors I've had. Sadly he moved schools so I don't see him often
Oh my gosh. Man, this sound hit me hard right in the heart. Great job U of T musicians.
That one made me tingle.
I recall someone complaining about a tuba/euphonium quartet being called a "tuba quartet", but I'm sure he would even admit that the two instruments sound fabulous together. That and there is a shortage of standard chamber ensembles that admit baritones and euphoniums.
John Ries the euphonium is also known as the tenor tuba anyways so it isn't wrong to say it's a tuba quartet
Lucas Boylan
Baritone, euphonium, and tenorhorn are all part of the tuba family. I'm no expert, but "tenor tuba" appears to be a generic.
John Ries tenor horn is definitely not part of the tuba family
Lucas Boylan tenor horn in the German and American understanding is basically a baritone with rotary valves
...and a bell that points to the side instead of up or forward. I definitely don't mean what here in the USA is referred to as an alto horn.
I find tenorhorn parts in German band arrangements much more fun to play than baritone ones (good thing I read both treble and bass clef parts).
This is why I’ve played tuba for 45 years.
Dear listener:
Do yourself a massive favor and plug this into the best speakers you have, preferably anything with a decent subwoofer. Laptop and/or phone speakers simply don't do it justice. Enjoy!
Listening to this on my phone, I was thinking I need to do exactly that. Thanks for the tip!
I love that TJ West is part of my favorite band podcast, "After Sectionals."
Gorgeous beyond words. Is the printed music available? Please say yes!
Charles V Just bought it. Me and 5 other people will be performing this in April (I will be the tuba soloist)
Daniel Martinez Boiling Springs High School (yes, high school kids are attempting this)
Daniel Martinez That must be awesome. The only problem I've had so far with this piece is hitting that high Eb and F.
Daniel Martinez If the soloist in this piece is doing all that on a Bb or a C tuba, I'm impressed. I have to do this on a Bb.
Daniel Martinez OK. I feel a little better about myself now. I can hit those notes on a Bb, but they sound NOTHING like that 😂
I listen to this at least 1-2 times a week... truly extraordinary musicianship! Please make more videos!
So pleasant I've listened to this to go to sleep before 😴👍

So beautiful I cryed alittle but then it's that life changing song like a redemption song
Beautiful. Two people need to go to 'Ears Are Us' after giving it the 'thumbs down'.

You know, people might just dislike brass music. They are entitled to their own opinion. I think this is wonderful, but other people might think otherwise.

Very very nice arrangement. A pleasure to listen to. EDIT: Also, as a tuba player, I can't believe that one guy is playing with a mustache. I couldn't even keep a seal at all. Great job.

Beautiful, my son used to play in high school band. He loved playing at Tuba Christmas in McAllen where 100s of tuba players from RGV Schools & universities would gather for a performance during holiday. My wife picked up his tuba and played in his honor during following years performances. Bittersweet memories. Thank you

This is definitely a huge inspiration to us euphoniums! This also goes to show how good it can sound with just a little effort
What a work of art! The magic of music captured magnificently. The music itself, the performance and the videography are superb. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.
Both the tuba players and euphonium players sound amazing
You know euphonium and tuba nowadays are underrated and I hate that bc they are probably the two best sounding instruments in the whole brass section let’s just be honest here I am also a euphonium player here
1st time hearing this. been playing tuba for over 4 decades and I can say I was impressed with the sound, playing and the quality of the video. 1 thing also about the video, I can hear the emotion in the music being played by the musicians.
Thanks for that too.
I play the euphonium and this is so inspiring. It is so sweet
Two people accidentally hit dislike.
They took it for a SECOND like button!
Make that 3
I knew it was gonna be amazing if you aware of the instruments and how they sing you already knew this should be EPIC!!!
I cant believe this is only played on the euphonium and tube. Beautiful piece.
What a wonderful presentation
Only 6 years later but...this is so beautiful. Thank you for this.
I miss live music so much.
Amazing! I would love to hear more works produced by this group of musicians. Hearing this piece reminds me exactly why I love playing and listening to Tubas and Euphoniums. Thank you for this quality work.
it’s really sad how the beautiful sound of Tuba and Euph are just associated with songs like bouncy marches and bombastic frantic pieces. It’s pretty rare to see something as amazing as this from tuba and euphonium, but god is it worth it. This is what people need to know the low voices for.
I don’t play baritone or tuba (I play the trombone) and this almost brought tears to my eyes, I never realized how graceful these instruments were.
oh yea, euph and baritones are really damn smooth in the higher registers
That was the best trumpet song ever
these guys are too good... I'm a baritone and their tone, tuning, just... quality, in general... it all just puts me to shame lol. Then again, I am in the eighth grade, but that doesn't excuse my bad playing
Jason Cadwell you will get there! Practice helps. I play sax and every time I hear a incredible sax player I think same thing, but they had to practice and with time they got better
Baritone, or euphonium?
