I got one from work. I love it over my 2017 spectre x360.
It's quiet, lasts 5 hours while streaming music from youtube. quite light and got that nice 1080p matte display.
If you are thinking of getting one for travel and a mobile office. It is a fantastic idea.

I own both a 7470 (For Windows 7 compatibility) and a 5491 with the full 6 core cpu and optional Nvidia graphics. It's not a gaming laptop by any stretch of the imagination. But it's certainly a power users workhorse. I considered this model highly. Just the options of the 5491 had me impressed so much... But You will want to fill both slots of memory with this model. I ordered mine in the base 8 gb and bought an after market16gb kit. Money well spent. I gained nearly 9% performance jump over all without a battery life hit. Swell machines. 1080p on the run. Can't beat it.

The display on this thing is kick-ass, 14-inch 1080 IPS is just about perfect. Sure you can get a UHD display but you're going to drain and wear out your battery faster and at an arm's length I can't even tell the difference. I'll take the 1080p display and 60Wah battery thank you very much. This laptop is essentially every bit as good as the XPS13 or 15 is a less fancy enclosure.

Been using this since last 6 months as my office laptop. I have been a ThinkPad user (L412, T450, E460) since last 6 years, and this doesn't stand anywhere near them. The track point isn't nearly as good as a ThinkPad nor are the keyboard and trackpad, it gets crazy hot that makes it nearly impossible to keep it on your lap while working. Even doing light programming and browing makes it go all volcanic, during the quarantine I have had many episodes of random shutdowns with this machine I checked for temperature and it didn't seem hot. It's better than HP Elitebook though (but not as pretty with shiny aluminium and that sharp logo) but nothing like my T450.

I support most dell laptops in the Dell e74xx series and have to say that if you can get the 7480/7490 or the Thinkpad T480s (or the T470s), doesn't matter which to get. Get whichever is cheaper. However, although 8th gen is preferred. In my opinion, I work with/on Dells, mostly the 7470 and 7480 and 7490 and the docking stations I have to say I like the Lenovo T470s/T480s best. The Lenovos feel more premium.

    I own one with the 1080p IPS touch-screen, i5 8350U and replaced the SSD with a 970 Pro 512GB. upgraded from a Lattitude e7470.
Works great. The fingerprint sensor is very mediocre and far from impressive and the long POST time even on minimal setting makes the boot last way longer than it should (approx. 20 seconds to desktop), but those are the only issues I have with it.
4core/8thread cPU and 2 SoDIMM slots make it a great potential mobile VM box. The LTE module works just fine too.
Keyboard is awesome, touchscreen works great and cleans easy. It's a great productivity and IT (self)education machine.
Basically, this is going to be my main work/education device for the next 3 years at least.

Myself and a colleague have had issues using Dell Latitudes for pro audio in the past. We had skipping audio or dropouts when using ASIO drivers (low latency sound card drivers used for music production and DJing on Windows), and had to run DPC latency checkers to try and figure out what system drivers might be causing trouble. It's been many generations since our issues but I'm still wary of the brand. For my current machine I was lucky enough to find a review that listed DPC latency test results online. It has been perfect.

I own both the e7470 and 7480 with i7 cups and my 7480 has 24 gb of ram and m.2 ssd storage. for what these things are, they do it well. Equally as fast as my doctable e6540, yet more then a half smaller all around. The flipside to all of it is this comes at a cost. Both in performance as they use a U series cpu, and no dedicated graphics, finally costly. Especially if you step up from the base config. But if your needing a very stable, capable laptop they don't come with this much bells and whistles this thin and light. If your on the go like I am, it's worth every penny.

I have a 7490 too and it has a terrible issue with fan. At higher load fan tends to pulse secondwise, spins up fast within a second and slows down immediately. Sounds like a steam locomotive puff puff passing by. I have browsed articles, howtos etc. nothing has helped so far. Do you have a good idea what's wrong? The fan does not seem to be broken. I can reset BIOS to factory setting (not initial factory BIOS version) and issue is gone for a while, but then strikes back. Have never had similar issue with any notebook I have owned so far.

I read some forum, they replaced the fan and it's better with fan noise. But I can't be 100% sure

Lisa! Are you going to review the Yoga 730? (the one with GTX 1050) . That would be great!

    • @KungFuIsland
      @KungFuIsland 6 лет назад +1

from what I've heard, they haven't fixed the throttling issue yet. The CPU would downclock to below base speed whenever the gtx1050 was active because it would be throttling it down. It was some issue with the BIOS settings and Intel thermal framework. Otherwise it was nice, but not being able to use the gtx1050 was a dealbreaker, so I returned it. (despite all this throttling it still had mediocre battery life). Better to pick the 720 as it has a bigger battery, PSU, and doesn't have the issue. Their Ideapad 720s 15 (with the 1050 ti) is a much better buy if you don't need the tablet function.

so my work just gave me this to work from home and every time I'm looking at the screen it just looks off and I couldn't figure out why but now I know thanks to you it's the stupid 720 screen on it. it's fine but if you are use to always looking at 1080 screens this is going to look weird if you can dock it I would recommend it.

Should work if you put in 16 gb at least but it's gonna be slow with current versions - especially movie editors.

07:42 Oh dear. I had a 2016 XPS model and I absolutely hated the trackpad! So bad that I had to sent it back. No problems whatsoever on the Elitebooks and X1 Carbons. X1 Carbon remains king if you ask me (although it's quite pricey).

Awesome review as always! Question: If I went with a configuration with the core i5, do you think it would be good for some basic video editing (not 4k) or music production? I've been looking at these more business oriented laptops for a while now to upgrade from my current laptop. Thanks!

I bought one of these on the outlet for under $1000. SLP screen, IR, i5, TB, and 512GB NVME. I bumped it to 32GB of RAM.
While I was very happy with it initially, the fingerprint reader was TERRIBLE. So bad that I had to return it. Now we're getting them at work, and they're still terrible compared to the Goodix readers in the XPS, Inspiron 15, and my MateBook X Pro.

hello thanks for the video, i have a question, there's a version of the dell 7490 i7 with 16gb ram buy without fingerprint scanner, do you think it's worth, i mean the difference in price is just for the fingerprint or is there something else missing???

Hello, can you review the Dell Latitude 5420 as well, I use one for work and it works fantastic. Would still love to hear your thoughts. Before this laptop, my attention basically revolved around macbooks and xps lineup, so I was surprised this model works very well, with complete set of ports including two thunderbolts 👍🏻👍🏻
