What beautiful sailing grounds. You and “Sailing into Oblivion” had inspired me to look closely at the Westsail32’s. Happy to report I’m laying down watching your video on the settee of Hull #808 in Port Townsend,WA. Life goes by so fast in the grind, you inspired me to slow down and get back to sailing. Cheers to you!

Mate that is awesome. Congratulations. What a great hull number! What is her name? Send some photos.
I really wish you all the best and that you get to enjoy your time with your `new' Westsail as much as I get to enjoy Little Wing. For me, your comment sums up the essence of sailing. It is about slowing down; slowing down and just being.
      All the best.

Thanks Innfall. She looks absolutely great. I left a comment, which if all goes well should be on your channel page.
By the way, Little Wing once had her homeport in Portland.

West Sail 32's are not noted for there speed however you seem to be getting very respectable numbers. Could it be that most of these boats have old and worn out sails or maybe your an exceptionally good sailor? What ever it be it is a joy to watch your videos and its opened my eyes to these beautiful yachts .Thank you.

My pleasure, I am glad you enjoy the videos. I wish I could take credit for her good performance but I think they are just underrated. Perhaps people compare them to lighter weight yachts chasing around the cans and then in comparison the Westsail will be sluggish, but when it comes to chewing up miles... it is what they do well. Either that or I just got lucky and picked up a fast one ;)

Have to second Ben’s assessment here. Properly balanced and with the right sails for the conditions the W32 sails just fine and in comfort. Check out Sailing Into Oblivion (Jerome Rand) for another view of a W32 sailing in a high performance mode in classic open ocean conditions.
Then, let us know what you think… You’ll be surprised.

Hi how long did it take ? I want to sail from Cairns to gold Coast first time regards Richard

Sorry Richard, I have no idea how to answer that. It depends on so many things. I would strongly suggest the Australian Cruisers Forum and Cruising the Coral Coast by Allan Lucas for excellent pilotage information. Two things I would recommend is not to overestimate your average speed in your passage planning; be conservative and to be careful with relying on Northerly winds. Whilst the Northerlies do set in around spring time they are not as reliable as the South East trade winds. I found the Northerlies to be more fickle, often weak in the mornings, sometimes dying altogether before turning into a North Easterly sea breeze.
