What I love the most about your videos John is you catch then release. You don't wave the fish around in the air for 5 minutes telling how beautiful it is while it stresses from being out of the water. Thanks!
once again such a nice concise edit of your great ability to locate keepers! and I have to say, there's something extra special about kayak fishing on warm foggy mornings. nice post js. hope you all enjoyed your dinner.
Good catches! Enjoy the weather! Back in New England, it's freezing rain- cold - snow ..- rinse and repeat for all the days. Not missing anything whatsoever.
The sounds of that motor on the 3rd fish had me looking around lol. That was a great clip of the power of the fish pulling the kayak. Somebody had some fun this day!
One tip when casting at a tailing fish Slow it down when approaching it. When you see whatever wants to bite tailing your lure. Twitch it twice as fast but with a slight pause in between each double twitch. I've caught some very nice fish doing this.
There were only a few years when I didn't live on LI, and that was when I was upstate in grad school. When I finally got back for good, it was in Wading River. I so clearly remember passing your white jeep with a rod on top of it on Randall Road my first evening back. It was the first surfcasting truck I had seen in a couple of years, and I was downright excited to see it. I knew I was home.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John. After the white Cherokee (best 4x4 I ever owned) I had a green ex D.E.C. Jeep. I recall driving along the town beach and seeing you in your red Cherokee with your children in the back in their car seats. And seeing you and George G. fishing together. Those were the days. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and books. Yes, even this old inveterate surfcaster ( Fred Golofaro - R.I.P. used it once to describe me in one of his reports) can still learn from the pros! You do us all a great service by sharing your experiences and knowledge. I tell everyone who wants to learn to be a better fisherperson to watch your videos, catch your seminars and read your books! You will catch more fish! I could talk your ears off and maybe one day we can CATCH up one day. Thanks for reaching out. Greatly appreciated! Fish on!
The only thing I can really suggest is throwing shrimp or crab imitating lures because they're typically eating shrimp and or crabs which is why they're tailing
Tip for the tailing reds, especially when using scented baits....cast past the tailing redfish, slowly bring the lure into it's path, then kill the retrieve. More times than not, the redfish will sniff out that bait dead sticked on the bottom. This technique works great with DOA Shrimp, Gulp, and Zman's scented baits.
Another great video John! Just went out yesterday for sheepshead here in St Augustine. Another bait that they can’t pass up if you can’t find crabs is mussels. I bought a 4 dollar bag of them from Walmart and had a limit in a couple hours yesterday from my kayak. Tight lines!
The key to the tailing reds is very little movement of the bait throw it out past them and reel on the surface then drop right in front of them and don’t move it. Gulp 4” new penny shrimp will get them every time. They spook very easy to moving the bait when they are tailing. When you drop it in front of them do not jig either slow slight pull to drag the bait or don’t move it at all.
Nice job on the trifecta! Sheepshead are some of the best eating fish imo. Don't sleep on fried speckled trout either! Love the overhead shots of you retrieving and setting the hook. Good stuff
i once fished the shallows of the indian river for reds and the locals there used about a 2 or 3" GOLD spoon similar to our 'krocodile" spoons except gold in color. stealth and a cast in front of the tailing fish caught nice reds (3 to 6 lbs.) all day. love your calm, scientific, and common sense approach to fishing.
In carolina we use popping corks as the bobber and a jig under. Cast past the fish. The noise of the popper bobber makes them swim to it and hook up everytime
They just love that sound apparently it sounds like a shrimp? But I'll put my jig and litter 6 inches away from popper in 1 foot. Still works with gulps
@@JohnSkinnerFishing it will also help keep the jig in the middle of the small water column. Keeps it off bottom and it jigs when u pop it. Suspends when not. And when they hit it it obviously takes your popper bobber under
We have tailing reds all year up here in SC. The absolute best action I've have was on a 1/8oz trout eye jighead and a swimmin trout trick. They seem to be less skittish with the smaller, skinnier profile bait. And 1/8oz doesn't make much noise dropping into water.
Use a Zman crawdad ned rig on a mushroom jig head when your that close to reds and that shallow. They look like little crabs and make almost no slpash.
For three days Brother and I fished redfish on the fly rod mid-December in New Orleans for the first time, I don't use the word epic lightly it was epic! 28 redfish only 6 under 36" largest being 39"
I’ve caught hundreds of tailing reds in NC with weedless gold Hopkins spoons 1/8th Oz. You don’t get as many trout interested but I’ve rarely seen an actively feeding red pass it up. You can let them flutter into the grass and wait for the fish to catch up to it if you lead it too much. Once you bump it out of the grass they crush em. Thanks for all the content!
Hey John, been a while since I’ve fished for tailing reds on the flats. But I was always taught to cast beyond the fish, and a few feet ahead of the fish! This can be tricky sometimes because you need to know which direction they’re facing. Fishing it slow past them normally resulted in getting bit, especially in clear water. But they’ll mess with you big time, good luck!
Try vudu shrimp with procure. Or savage gear shrimp with procure. Even if they turn on it right away the scent usually will get a follow. They’ll usually eat if you don’t spook them.
Them tailing reds in that area are always the most skidding tailers I’ve ever fished for. You generally only get one or two of them to eat a trip. Lately I’ve been getting them on top water.
Nice job on the tailing red john. I used to do that in the Laguna madre on the texas coast with a fly rod Its a rush . Heres a tip try to get an angle so as you cast past em the lure is visible to the red but not heading directly towards it. Its very unnatural for any small fish or shrimp to swim directly towards a large predatory fish. And the reds know this and many times youll get a refusal. Hope it helps. Just me but i would never leave a great trout bite to cstch a sheephead. Lol
Sheepshead never heard of it. I'm from Massachusetts maybe you could do a cooking or grilling of your fresh caught fish beachside, bet it would be good.
If I noticed correctly you are using a loop knot on that soft jerkbait. Could you go over that sometime? I know it provides more action on the lure but it would be great to hear take on it. Awesome as usual. I will be down in the Englewood area hopefully in February.
Check this video out, Joshua Taylor, how to get bait. Next year when go down to Florida bring your big ICE SCRAPER if you still have one. The one they use for sidewalks. They probably don't sell them in Florida.
Im trailering my starcraft down palm beach in March for 10 days and im going to try some back water fishing. Im more of an offshore kind of guy but I figure since I'll be camping on peanut island a few nights I should try. I think next winter I may take a 3 month sabbatical down there. I'm looking into buying an rv and since I'm a roofer I can work anywhere. I hate this cold rainy/snowy bull crap of Philadelphia. I had 3in icicles on my rod tip the other day 😢😭
Where are you fishing John..... about ? Your 1st area looked VERY much like my island near Fort Myers. Most people beat up under the bushes for snook but I like the fact your fishing a lil off. I typically don't fish the shallows like that but I guess you showed me something. And the 5" jerk bait is money, I don't use gulps as there too expensive when the bite is on and the damn puffers like to eat chunks out of them. Fine fishing !
I've been watching your channels for some time now. I really enjoy them not only because you put a good product out but because I fish the same places. I wonder how Ive never run into you! I love sheepshead too, absolutely delicious fish. Btw, where do you get your mud crabs?
Tailing reds ProCure > Gulp. Also if they arent hitting just let it sit and they will pick it up when they feel like it, no reason to work it the whole way in if they arent being aggressive
Hi John, I didn’t want to bother you and wasn’t 100% sure it was you, but were you having a late lunch at Gramma Dots today? (1/11/22) I’m a big fan and watch all your videos and have lotsa respect for your expertise and knowledge!

One word on the redfish in the beginning….NICE!!!
Those are some amazing trout you’re catch!
Just watching the catch between the red fish and the trout I could tell the difference in the fight.
That hit at 6:40 looked so solid. You could tell it was a big because the nose of the kayak just spun towards it!
Awesome fishing my friend.

My favorite combination of fish for a slam! Also delicious eats!
John has zero fear! The second I see a shark I'm hitting the maximum overdrive away from it he went straight to it!
Those big sheep’s are fun, and I find that they eat the jig right up, no nibbling
boat flips some quality trout that for some of us would die to hook up with; brings out the net for sheepshead lol!
Some great fish there! I'm currently hitting the river thames in England for Perch and pike but man that looks like some beautiful fishing by you!
