I’m recently retired and this is my first time staying in SW Florida in the winter. The video was really helpful to point me in the right direction to target trout around structure. The water temperature near Sanibel and Fort Myers is around 66 and I’m not having any luck from the beaches.
If you're not eating speckled trout while you're in Fla you are missing out. They are mighty fine table fare! I started using the Tsunami Carbon last year. Thanks for the recommendation!
Nice trout! If you like reading Louisiana has done a long term study on specks and they have the most successful fishery for them because they have the best management program. You can find their research articles on line and they are worth the read!
I agree with the earlier comments about trout versus weakfish. 12 years in FL full time and NJ transplant, so I've caught and eaten both. Trout are a much better taste and texture. Don't keep them much above 20" though. They tend to get a tad mushy and wormier when they're bigger. BTW, don't sweat the worms, if you see a few.
Thumbs up on the high cam. Trout are one of the few I enjoy eating. I just sauté in a little butter and olive oil, salt and pepper. Simple but I keep only for the same day! Anxious to see if you fix up that boat and work the inlets and beaches. I don't have a yak and primarily fish a Boston Whaler Montauk. Looking for some of your wisdom on that type of fishing.
The overhead camera view is an excellent addition, John. I watched your short jerking motions on the rod tip, and applied it successfully on my next trip. Thank you.
John, trout taste nothing like weakfish. Trout are actually in the drum family and taste fantastic. And this is coming from a guy who won't eat weakfish for probably the same reasons as you. Definitely give them a try. I'll take a trout over a mangrove snapper or redfish in a heartbeat. The only inshore fish I'd rate above a trout would be a cobia, pompano, and sheepshead. Flounder is up there too. Plus trout are stupid easy to fillet. Also for what it's worth, my wife during a blind taste test will choose trout every time for what it's worth. Also you can keep 1 trout above 19 inches in SW Florida.
Probably not an issue with a light setup like you're using here, but do you think the gloves would help protecting your casting finger from being cut up by braid when surfcasting? Ever faced this issue? Curious to know how you handle.
Those are some quality trout. Beautiful fish. I used to wade fish port aransas area. My main lures were a rebel jumpin minnow and a 6 inch sluggo. Both very effective. In my opinion trout are delicious. Great job out there.
You found one of my favorite islands to fish in the winter. Only spot I’ve been finding big trout lately. The slot is 15 to 19. But one over 19 per vessel is aloud. If you bake it in lemon butter sauce it comes out pretty good. But you have to eat it that day.
I like the high camera, would really like to see it in action on a large fish that has the power to pull the kayak. I noticed on initial hook up, it jerked the kayak toward the mangroves. This view makes the action seem more intense being we get the perspective of how the kayak is responding to the tug. Happy hunting John!🎣
@@JohnSkinnerFishing one thing I would do, and have done myself with multiple cameras recording, is when editing unlink the audio from the head camera and put it in for the high camera. The reason I say this is because the sound on the head camera will be much more crisp when it comes to the reel and drag. So in other words, you won't lose the intensity in the sound by using the audio from the high camera. Can't wait to see more of this. Good luck, but you don't need me to say that 🎣👍
Thanks, but that is way too much work. I'm supposed to be retired! I did do something today to clean up the high audio. It should be better, then I'll be able to amplify that audio in the video editor. We'll see...
The mix of the two cameras in this videos feels just right - sitting view for the majority of time, with a bit of the high camera for a different perspective.
Like high cam too.Tee handle on motor raise fits through scupper. Flopping trout knocks it thru and you're wading or cut cord to raise motor. Be careful.
Thank goodness John, we’re dying up north. Incredible sunrise, green mangroves, sunshine, warmth, shark, reds, snooks, and trout. What more can we ask for? Excellent and love the high cam and the comment suggesting running the drone along the mangroves. Your next video can’t come soon enough! Tight lines 🤙
The high camera was really cool. Like the way it shows the action of how your fishing the bait and your retrieve speed. Very very cool birds eye view of the kayak gave it an almost like being there feel to video. Thanks John… by the way just got the new Dark Matter Skinner rod cant wait for fluke season to try that baby out feels like it a really nicely made rod.
I use a 7ft for inlets and to fish along rocky shore when the fish are close. But usually 9ft is my go to. With 1/2-1 ounce bucktail depending on conditions and depth
@@carlocosta1706 it depends on the fish and the day. I use different color paddle tails and the zoom flukes. It’s usually a case of matching the profile of the bait
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Hi John, the application is for seabass in Ireland, family up there, just smaller version of striped bass, good fishery than other parts of Europe,as banned commercial fishing...not to many inlets, although where i fish entrance to estuary, the grounds very rocky and can be shallow,i don't see anyone fishing bucktails, all use Japanese lures, expensive,i had success on 3/4 oz bucktails up there last year, during short visit, lots of anglers use softplastics, find bigger ones don't cast as good, waters can be calm at times with not much wave action, most anglers use fancy Japanese rods around 9ft light rods 10 to 30 g,which i think can be limited sometimes against wind, keep up the very educational vids !
Good trip, also liked the high camera and how you switched back to the reg cam. Also like you, I don’t like eating the trout, to me they don’t taste good at all…. Thanks for sharing!!
John, if you had your boat down there how would your fishing change. Obviously wouldn’t be able to get in to those shallow areas but are there deeper places in that area holding fish?
When fishing off shore, would you rather have the tide moving in or out? I am trying to plan my pto and tuna trips for the season. my first guess was to be heading out at low tide, getting the spot as the fish should be moving in. or would leaving at the high tide be better? the bait hitting a wall of waiting fish on the outgoing thanks for any insight, really hope to meet you one day. thank you
U would want to look that up some people who know what their doing on RUclips if you wanna try or go to salt strong which does require a subscription but is bound to have exactly what your looking for or at least good tips for other offshore species that u can integrate the knowledge with

The 5" gulp jerkshads are the mist popular softbaits in New Zealand. Great video as usual. Thanks

Love the hig camara 🙌🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🎣🎣🎣
Great shots. Thanks for this vid. Can you activate the high camera remotely? If so what are you using to activate it. Thanks😎
I don't. I just turn on the high camera and run it until the battery dies.

Yes.

Love the high cam John
Hi camera is very helpful.
You have to try the daimiki armorshad!
Love the high camera view!! It’s neat to see the flats around the kayak
I was thinking the same released just in time, heard that skiff coming....Fish on

I thought you can keep one over slot
You can. I didn't realize that because I wasn't looking to keep any.

Hi John, I think you're learning that you need to add that location into your rotation. Nice fishing.
I have never eaten a weakfish but specs are a nice tasting fish. I grill them in olive oil and just add a few spices.
I'll trade you that 77 degree water temp for that blizzard we got yesterday in the mid atlantic. Couldn't even get the slime rockets to eat today

Teaching them the in's & outs on the water? I would definitely be interested in something like that.
I haven't because I'm pretty busy the way things are.
You should make a video swimming your camera drone along the mangrove edges early morning.
Tall camera is great.
I prefer the high camera.
The high camera is incredible
The high camera was Great, a new look at what you see. Gret video, keep up the great work!
Another awesome video! I also live in Lee Count but spent time in CT. In my opinion spotted sea trout are exceptionally better than weakfish.
Poorly prepared, soft mealy and tasteless. We prepared, firm and flavorful. I keep the skin on the filets, spice them, then bake.

Florida fishing is very addicting . I’ve caught the fever for the past two years .
+1 on the high camera, it reduces glare and we can see right through the water. Depth perception is the next challenge to conquer!
Those larger reds fight like a carp in a shallow lake..

Very nice 3 spot Red!
Sick camera angle! can see all the fish!
John, love your FL adventures. What do you mean by “good timing”?
A fishing skiff cruising by just after I released the fish.
The high angle looks really great. It was so cool to see the other fish react while you had one on. Great intro too.
The high camera really showed the sand potholes in the grass…perfect trout habitat!
I was waiting for another video, perfect timing. Reds are so much fun to fight, love the sound of the drag.
If this your go-to kayak now? what about the hobie?
I just revived it yesterday. You'll see it soon, but yes, this is the primary.

I like the high camera! Which OldTown do you own and do you trailer it?
AP 120. I use a bed extender on my short bed truck.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you. DT
Since the Gopro alters perspective, about how far from the shoreline are you actually positioned? Thanks!
Around 100 feet I think.
Gotta love the redfish. It's like hooking a bus! Interesting how far off the mangroves they are when they hit.
What color gulp swim bait is that? Great vid!!! I’ll be there in a few weeks and can’t wait!!
No issue with red tide? Thought it was still impacting West Coast.
None. Florida is clear.

How often do you retie your lure
Depends on the condition of the leader.
What I wouldn’t do to go fishing with skinner the master
Did you get a reprieve from the cold front that hit FL overnight?
55 when I went out this morning.
Super fluke style always a killer near cover I find. Good stuff sir!

Can you eat those fish
yes on the trout.
