I read in the comments on the original video that she had pneumonia during this performance and was advised against singing at all. When I had pneumonia, I found breathing at all to be difficult, so this is even more impressive.

SoHyang has always struggled with her health during her lifetime with those many illnesses.. uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be made in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician. Her singing is so special.

SoHyang is extraordinary vocalist. Her health was very bad at that time but she nailed it as always. I even cannot find proper words to explain her.. So special so precious so beautiful singer.
She was suffering from severe pneumonia at this time. So, the doctor said no to the stage, but Sohyang was on stage with a strong will

So Hyang always arranges her performances in an epic fashion. This one is one of her best.
You're right, Justin -- "pre-planned" vs "improvised" is a seriously interesting question with brilliant artists like Sohyang (and, recently, Angelina Jordan). When you listen to multiple performances of the same song and the same arrangement, you hear the same riffs and runs and strategies, but I don't know how much of it is a lot of practice, or just the ability to understand the best path to perfection, internalize it, and reproduce it at will. I think for Sohyang it's the latter. Sohyang is a musical genius, and so once she "understands" her version of a song, she reproduces it, much like a poet can recite a poem to great effect to an audience.
Just imagine how would she sang it if she was healthy that time. Damn! She is truly vocalist! QueenSo!

Every single time I hear her sing, I can’t help but just close my eyes and lose myself in her voice. I don’t know the technical side of things, but her voice resonates in me, she makes me “feel” so much. Her skill in arranging songs is incredible - she has an amazing skill to show off her vocal skills while all the time making her audience get lost in the song. I love her and love watching people react to her. She is really one of a kind.

Yes. Thank you for this invigorating reaction of Sohyang's masterpiece. This performance incorporated tons of vocal techniques and pedestrian listeners simply don't grasp the advanced skill required to deliver as Sohyang did. Through your reaction, I could some confirmation of her mastery of this rearranged You Raise Me Up. We know as a certainty that Sohyang spent hours preparing for this kind of performances in advance. However, her discipline and control seem to be omnipresent during the performance, always keeping her technically proficient and precise. She can, somehow (that's probably why she is special), inject the emotional context without disrupting the technical execution and deliver the song's impact to her audience in a touching and intimate manner I have rarely seen in other singers. Hope to see you again.

FYI, she had a pneumonia before this performance and she decided to put everything on this performance. It’s amazing to hear such a wonderful voice despite the sickness

Michael Bolton asked Kim So-Hyang to go on a 'world tour' with him. She politely declined. Why? She does not sing for 'commercial' gains. Her post-cancer life has been driven by her Christian faith, and her singing is purely from heart/soul, nothing more/less. Her singing is not only angelic, she IS an angel.
what absolutely slays me every single dang time about so hyang is she never uses in ear pieces, or any other fancy stuff to hear herself sing...& she's always just absolutely perfect.

My favourite So Hyang performance :) This is one that I recommended. Flying away on the wings of angels.
She said on an interview that she practised these contests songs over a hundred times. Fact is hard work got her to where she is now. If you look at an early performance you will see just how far she has come.

Not sure if you realized this, but the fellow in the audience who the camera kept cutting to was Shane Filan from Westlife, who has one of the most revered and popular renditions of this song.
He went on the record saying that SoHyang's was now his favorite rendition.
SoHyang does all of these new arrangements for her renditions of songs herself.
The nearly 8 minute long "Everyone" should be next.

I don’t think Sohyang improvises much, although she really can if she wants too. She (and a bunch of other artists on these shows) rehearse like crazy so that everything is perfect for TV. But if you want to see an improvised performance of hers I recommend her cover of Kirk Franklin’s Lean on Me, which isn’t on a competition show like most of her popular performances are. This is one of her most soulful performances ever

So hyang one of my favorites.
Her closest and best friend Park Ki Young has about the same vocal range but is a tad more versatile because she can belt them with equal emotional impact and power in rock, pop, soul, jazz and classical ( opera). A few of my favorites that are worthy of reacting to:
“ Spring Rain” ( her raspy ending amazing!)
“ wound” ( amazing)
“ a song for you”
“Hit hee Park Ki Young” (one of my all time favorites)
“ Nella Fantasia “ ( best version ever and I’ve watched all the world class vocalists perform this)
Mask ( she was robbed. They gave it to the King. Total highway robbery).
But my reason for my comment is this:
When you have a few moments , I’d like for you( or your audience who is reading this) to respond to a virtually unheralded unknown female vocalist who I chanced upon about a month ago and she blew my mind to kingdom come.
If you like angelic heavenly female vocalists with a high vocal range, then please keep reading. She goes by the name “ Eivor” She’s from the small Faroe island and when she gives a
performance virtually the whole island of about 600 show up. She has an angelic voice so unique , so mystical , so magical, so entrancing so hauntingly beautiful that if you ( or your subscribers) react ( no one will recommend her so I hope you will react privately ) to the following 6 performances after which you will become an avid fan and utter to yourself “ why on God’s earth is she not famous??). You’ll want to subscribe to her website where she will enthrall and mesmerize and entrance you with about 40 more songs ( a mixture of live and MV’s and she is one of the few world class vocalists who is as good or better performing live. Every one of her live performances will silence your mind and open the floodgates of your heart and soul. ).
Please RUclips the following 6 live performances ( first 4 from her small island , the 5th ( “ “True Love” live from LA ) and the last in Denmark in front of thousands with full orchestra performing for the Queen Of Denmark!).

Eivor “falling free” ( the one that’s 6:47 duration.. it’s in English ) You will love her and her band. It’s on the island but inside I believe a restaurant seating capacity ( when the camera panned the audience) probably 300 lucky lucky souls to witnessed this beyond amazing performance. She put it on RUclips about 3 years ago and very few views and likes. If she performed it in America and there were 50,000 in attendance , all 50,000 would be screaming and yelling for a long time during and after the performance.
The strobe lightening, camera work, her otherworldly vocal is beyond belief. At the end she hits notes that are so celestial so mystical so heavenly that you would think you died and went the heaven-especially that last sustained higher than high note!
“Eivor trollabundin” ( first vid 5:44). ( from the Faroe Islands and trollabundin meaning ‘spellbound’ and all who watch this amazing. Video in her native language will be spellbound.). Wish I was there outdoors sitting with the audience. Great tribal primordial vibes. Atmospheric mesmerizing hypnotic recognizable vocal prowess. The island’s backdrop scenery of mountains and rivers are breathtakingly beautiful and I wish I could book a plane and be sitting with the islanders for the live concert.
Eivor “ Wake me Up” ( 7:11 duration) in English and she kills it with celestial high notes and emotional impact. It’s about her longing to wake up from this earthy dream and reunite with love or lover that left her with this heart-wrenching longing.
( and oh boy does her voice scale the ethereal heights). This vocalist has already become one of my top 5 female vocalists.And I just discovered her less than a month ago.
Excuse my excitement but whenever I discover a new amazing vocalist I can’t control my emotions.
I was one of the very first to discover and highly recommend (before the masses reacted to): Morissette, Daryl Ong, Dimash, ( best pop-op vocalist in the world), Diana Ankudinova, , Park Hyoshin ( best love/love lost ballad vocalist in the world) , Park Ki Young ( one of the best female vocalists.. as good as or better than So Hyang ), Forestella ( best male vocal harmony crossover group in the world Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody they KILL!). Lara Fabian ( best female vocalist in the world (RUclips “ is Lara Fabian the best vocalist in the world” also co-wrote “ adagio” “ Broken Vow”Dimash considers her the best in the world)
Evior “verd min live” (4:41 duration ... pure angelic rendition. This song in her native langauge will send you to where angels tread.
Finally,
“Evior may it be “ ( Lord of the Rings) in front of thousands with full orchestra and the Queen of Denmark! incredible, mystical, celestial , will transport you to a higher realm).
After the final note the camera pans to the upper deck where you see the Queen clapping along with thousands of others. Again, no one will recommend but if by chance you or your audience have a few spare moments please react privately. You will thank me.
