If this is the Silver Bell mine off of Sheridan road you were in the middle of nowhere! I used to live 1.5 miles from the North end of Toroda creek road.
Having spent a good amount of time in a core repository where thousands of boxes of core are carefully stored, it blows my mind when people find boxes of core just abandoned at old mine sites. Awesome site! Happy birthday Sarah!
This is not a tailing pile but instead a mine dump, tailings are from Mills, but did you see the open pit- it is on State Land and permitted for mining. It has commercial grades of Silver, some gold and perhaps some rare earth minerals as well.
After looking at the mindat page, I believe that the purple rock is actually fluorite and not amethyst. Also after looking at your website and seeing some of the close up photos I can see that some of the crystals have a cubic shape which is characteristic of fluorite
I think the listing is just incorrect, or they got confused with one of the other mines in the area. The problem with mindat is that the listing are user generated, so anyone can really say anything they want. I don't see any cubic crystals of Fluorite when I look them but I do see a number of just purple spots and purple quartz crystals. Unfortunately its all too small to hardness test with any level of accuracy which would really rule one or the other in or out.

I am definitely an advocate for joining a local rock club! It's great for if you don't have funds for your own tools as you can use theirs, and in BC, if you're a member of ANY official club, you can often join any affiliate club's field trip anywhere on the province! But I've definitely noticed that many of the club old-timers are grizzled old folks. They had a LOT of knowledge, but i have to realize that in at LEAST the 20Th person to ask them basic entry level questions. Some people find that exciting, some people find that tiresome. Like most hobbies I've gotten into, doing some basic research like watching your youtube videos is invaluable for getting to the specifics, the 201-level learning. My club hasn't had much for field trips, but that's not their focus - the knowledge of where to go is there, though. So if you're new and want to go on field trips, sign up to lead a couple field trips! Make it less of a slog for the old timers to share their knowledge, and show that your don't just expect/want to be spoonfed everything. Definitely not saying any of these tips as judgement on you two!! Just my observations from having joined a club myself a couple years ago and having talked to new people and old timers volunteering and many in between!

I could watch you for hours, well actually I have. I'm original from NY around lake Ontario, and now live in OH around lake Erie. Both of the beaches I went to as a child and as an adult with my children were rock beaches. Going back to visit Fair Haven Beach in NY, as an adult, I was fascinated by the different rocks around me, that as a child, I was too busy swimming in the lake to notice. Now one of my favorite pastimes is to visit Headland Beach in OH and observe the different properties of them. I am always wondering what was actually in my hand. Thank you for your channel encouraging us to look at the wonders with in our own state, and educating me on the world of rock and minerals as an adult of 56.

You visit Bob Ross paintings and get a front-row seat to observe some of the most awesome works of geology and humanity. Just living the dream, there. Some of those cores looked fascinating. I'd have probably spent a few hours picking those up and beckoning companions over because, "Ooh! Look what the rock did, here! Can you imagine the forces that took?" Thank you! As for the bucket, its a animal feed bucket from Little Giant and it normally comes with handle that has a V notch in it so you can hang the bucket for an animal to eat from but I just take the handle off with some pliers, bend the notch out, put the hose on and re attach the handle. The small feed buckets are amazing!

I'm not sure how much of that black mineral you gathered, if you gathered any, but if you can, would you be able to collect some for me to analyze? I don't know how heavy it is, but I'm thinking 1 lbs would be plenty, if it isn't magnetic. I don't really care about examining magnetite since I have tons of that, but I can perform some chemical analysis of the material and maybe find something really interesting.
I can pay for shipping, trade or whatever. I'm getting a little burned out purifying iron and manganese compounds out of solution, though I have found some other metal salts that I've not yet identified, but I'm pretty sure they are either lead, zinc, aluminum, magnesium and/or other boring elements.
So I really didn't pick up much of this stuff cause I didn't know what it was but I now have one of the chunks still on my desk in line to go under the microscope. Lets chat about it in an email.

I'm about six hours in with dissolving some black sediment in aqua regia from rock tumbler sludge I've accumulated over the past couple years, and I'm seeing some possible promising clues already. I also first roasted the dried silt/sludge before treating with the nitric+hydrochloric acid mix. After several days, I'm going to destroy any remaining nitric acid with sulfamic acid, then test for platinum group metals, silver, gold, etc., with stannous chloride, potassium dichromate and various other reagents along with using electrochemistry in an attempt to recover anything possible from the acid waste solution. It's just a small scale experiment, but I've got a couple of five gallon buckets full of heavy concentrates. I'll most likely not find much of anything other than iron and manganese because it seems everything is iron, manganese, silicon dioxide and occasionally copper. I'm just trying to pass the time, keeping my mind busy.
I was 10 in Salem the day MT St. Helen's erupted and boy did we feel it. Then we wore it breathed it lived with it all over. Lol The ash was so bad. I wanted to ask you Will that eruption change the rock or eventually form minerals after a couple million years?
It won't change the rocks immediately but given enough time the minerals can leach out, flow down into the earth with water, and redeposit underground where eventually they will be exposed in millions of years.
Dude I’m so jacked up by my new “to me” 2015 Dodge Journey. Totally reminds me of your vehicle! Your totally one of my top rockhounding role models so… YES!!! Can’t wait to get out there! Totally awesome! There were some hiccups with the car purchase to say the least! We found a rock inside from the previous owner. So that and what you showed in your video here made me feel better. My wife Ashley is already looking into rockhounding themed vanity plates 😂👍🏼
I love quartz crystals, and some of the smaller ones are especially beautiful. Can you remove the layers of hematite easily? I think there are chelating solutions that can remove iron oxide without affecting the crystals but am not really certain. Looking forward to seeing them under magnification.

I have to think of the tailings mountain as a lava river in the way it has destroyed the landscape. Depending on the chemicals this too will pass, think of the Newberry lava flows. Of course the stuff that is only 1300 years old is still very rough.

That was also when Eisenhower ordered superslabs everywhere. So the destruction became complete. Um, yeah. I don't like it one bit...don't get me started. Ike also kept us in the dark about UAPs/UFOs, potential free unlimited energy, preservation of capitalism...He was fresh from a Big Win & a general. Yeah soo, again don't get me started...!!
At the end when you had all the pieces set out the one on the far right looks like a snarling lions head. I don't know if anyone else sees it but its crazy obvious to me. Lol maybe ima dork but thought I'd share

There sure could be silver in the ore but I don't really have any way of extracting it. Sara picked the the locations for the trip! :)

Cleaning these with acid seems to work pretty well.
They probably sliced and crushed half the core to check for the ore load…

Are those crystals coated with iron or hematite? Would iron out remove the hematite, if that's what it is?
I'm not exactly sure but it does come off with iron out. It kinda seems like flaky Hematite almost.
The amethyst quartz would be really nice tumbled, it shows more of its color.
Metal detector for missed ores?
Perhaps that could be done but generally the metals in the ore are in very low concentration.
Can you show us how to clean this crystals? By acid?
I have done that in past videos, I'm not sure I will do it again.
