- I would say that I'm not an easily impressed individual, and it really takes a lot to impress me. That said, I must say I have been very impressed with the material coming out of these three locations.
It was such a good experience to have and a great opportunity that we couldn't pass up.
Although these sites are not normally open to the public, rock clubs are sometimes allowed to visit, and you can always visit the shop in Wasco and buy the material direct from Don himself.
Thanks for watching!

You sound almost like you feel unworthy of the perks of having a channel. If anyone deserves it, you do. You're putting in a lot of work between the channel and the website. Much appreciated, sir.
Perhaps you're correct, I have hard looking at things I have done with appreciation.
OMG! I just cleaned some of that Jasper! I had no idea! Wow!!! So appreciate you!!!
What lovely colours. Jasper is amazing
Beautiful material. Another 2 1/2 hour excursion on the #BucketList Thanks for taking us along.
Time for you to take a road trip!
That polished is beautiful. Love the caramel color .
Wow man, this was impressive. I have found a ton of jasper but nothing like that.
Great interview with the owner as well, I feel like I know more after watching this video.
Chat soon buddy!
Thank you man, this is some really nice material to have.
What a fun video. So much material that you can’t decide what to take. Wow 😎
Its a good problem to have.
Beautiful rock. Thank you for the fun adventure.
🙃☕❤❤❤❤
Didn’t realize that I had wonderland in my own back yard but my sister and her grand kids are rock hounds too so I foreword your video:-) as she lives close by!
If your backyard is Stevens County you have no idea how amazing this place is.
Seriously dude, I almost cry every time i see you pick up an awesome rock and then drop it. I have no impulse control, I would take it ALL home with me lol
Before you know it the collection becomes too much.
Oh my gosh...that looks like fun...im impressed. Want to go there!
Thank-you for helping me identify a rock I found across the river from Biggs.
:)
Omg... that opalized is beautiful...super envious. I can't imagine walking away.
Haha gotta go home at some point. :)
@@CurrentlyRockhounding well something to think about...
I have 4 days every other week so I'd go on day one.. by day three I might be ready to go home...
How very cool 😎, beautiful stuff for sure, nice colors in it ,
That is some beautiful jaspers my friend!!
Nice video!!
Holy shizzle!! The Volkswagen sized Jasper is...wow...wow🤩!!! The picture jasper is absolutely gorgeous!
It's quite amazing.
Gonna be going out there soon with a friend. Hopefully to collect some rough.
Oh tell me about, so much of it was a keeper.
Awesome trip. Lots of nice stuff there.
Remember the BiggsPicture Rock coming in to the Curio Shop in Pendleton, Oregon the 1960’s where it was in Bolo tie clasps and belt buckles. Besides the Jasper I have discovered cousins living in the Dalles through genealogy.
Glad you guys made it down, Don is a great guy to spend the day with and lots of great deals at the shop in Wasco.
It was a great day out.
6:55 Wow what a mountain scene in that Jasper. That will be epic!
Thanks for sharing another post sir, much appreciated! Stopped by Biggs on my way home from Naches and looked at the road cut jasper seam. Maybe make a trip up there again and stop by one of these great private mines. Absolutely amazingly beautiful stuff out there my friend just waiting for someone to love it!! My mouth just waters looking at some of that material, yummy yummy yummy~ Hope you and Sara have a nice week sir~
Stopping by the Wasco shop is amazing, absolutely amazing.
2nd spot just as beautiful stuff wow , your close to that ribbon basalt I was talking about in comments before interesting stuff , thank you for sharing in this heat wave 😊💙☀️
Oh yeah its hard to pick for me, I loved this adventure.
Speechless...I Love jasper. That is an amazing place. Now on my bucket list! Thanks Jared!✌😎
It's an amazing location.
Saw som e really nice stuff that looked great for heat treating and knapping.
Beautiful chunk at 9 minutes in!
I live in The Dalles, and have heard of The China Hollow Mine and of it's beautiful Biggs Picture Jasper.
I've asked a few local area rockhounds if there happens to be a retail shop open to the public, or if the mine offer excursions and an opportunity to buy their Picture Jasper in the raw...
I've been told time & time again that the owner is very reclusive, offers extremely limited access to his mine to only a very scant few, and doesn't offer his jasper for sale through a retail shop.
I'm so happy I ran into your channel today and started binge watching your informative videos!!
Imagine my surprise to learn every thing I've been told about the owner, his mine, and retail shop wasn't accurate, to say the least, giving benefit of doubt.
I'm so stoked now!! I can't wait to make a trip to Biggs/Wasco and stop by the shop!! I hope that the The Rockhound Gods, bless me with a chance to listen to the owner talk about all things Biggs, Picture Jasper!!
Thanks guys for making such an informative video, that's such a pleasure to watch!! As your new fan, I am eager to get back to binge watching more of your videos, I have so much yet to learn!!
When the student is ready..
The teacher shall appear.
(Via RUclips, it works for me!)
So, on with the show!!!
Well that's a shame to hear.
The owner is a great guy and his shop in Wasco is awesome to visit. As for visiting the mines they do open them up to rock club visits.
I'm sure Don would love to chat with you about the jasper.
Gorgeous stuff! The polish he did on the samples is awesome!
I love rocks. I'd totally geek out if I had these experiences. Just wow.
It's was really a great experience.
Amazing spot... crazy looking stuff 😃
Very nice material, thanks for the tag along.
Thanks for watching!
All that Biggs Jasper is really beautiful. Some looks like petrified wood which is awesome
It's really pretty stuff.
Yup, mind blown ---- kabooooom! Very nice! Can't wait to get there someday!
It's well worth the trip!
Wow I’m marking this place down as a place I need to visit when I come that direct. The piece at 8:56 I think is my favorite piece you found be sides those at 19:19. All very beautiful and thanks for sharing the video
If you visit the NW ever you will be in for quite the treat.
The picture jaspers are easily some of the most beautiful gemstones in my opinion. I love the warm colors and the "organic", flowing details. (Can't believe I said "organic"🤣). Thank you for showing us how many beautiful rockfinding opportunities we have here in the Northwest. Definitely one of the reasons I love your videos.
It's really a gem to work with! ; )
Is it fair to say the NW has some of the best rockhounding in the world? Cause I sure think so!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Absolutely!
Wow! Fantastic material. Thanks for the tour and interview.
Can't wait to see that belt buckle!
you just cant beat picture jasper. That material is the stuff of legends :)
It sure is nice!
A feast for the eyes, thank you !
Beautiful rocks! 💚💚💚
Thank you for the virtual field trip! The jasper slabs are amazingly beautiful and it's always interesting when you chat with the owners
Beautiful rocks!!!!!
Some of the most beautiful rocks I’ve ever seen.
Thank you.
I gotta say it, and I do NOT intend this in anyway as an Insult, so please dont take it that way. If I was looking at you on the street and saw you in a Long sleeve shirt, I would never in a million years think you were tatted up. You honestly from Appearnce without knowing you, you strike me more as the nerdy office type than the tattooed badboy type lol. Love the ink btw, I have 70+ tats myself.
Just goes to show you really cant judge based on appearence. Love the channel man keep up the great vids!
So. Much. Gorgeous. Material!! So many different colors and in such a pretty area. Thank you for sharing.
Very cool, amazing material!
This was great, recent to rockin, kinda 😉 great exercise and for my old legs. Sounds like there's numerous places on and around that area have to take a week and go looking.
Wow, this makes my Biggs jasper haul look like small potatoes! Well, not EVEN small potatoes - more like potato molecules. Super video, Jared.
Oh its all about the adventure, never about the rocks : )
@KatyDid ROCKS! chunky, Chunky, CHUNKY!!!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding it’s a little bit about the rocks ☺️ chunky chunky!
WOW! What an incredible experience. That material would be very hard to sell/let go. You found some absolute keepers out there. Having access to localities like that truly is a humbling experience. We’ve had the honor of visiting a couple of significant fossil sites that we’ll probably never top. Thanks for taking us along on your visit!
These are experiences to be cherished.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks for coming by and watching!
That was fun!!
I’m a maintainer for the railroad in the deschutes river canyon, close to where you are at in this video. Would love to share what I find at work on a daily basis. You think this is overwhelming? I’ve got 50+ miles of almost untouched and inaccessible to the public. The diversity of the rock just in that 50 miles would blow your mind…
Great video once again! Really good content with the mine owners.
I'm glad you liked it.
Can’t wait to see the finished cabs!
Those rocks are stunning!
Thank you!
Great job beautiful pieces I enjoy y'alls videos bunches keep up the good work currently rockhounding is my favorite RUclips channel.
April fools day video was Cool Beans 😎
Be careful out there!
Thank you!
Beautiful area ❤.
Awesome video you guys!!! I must go to Wasco!!! That stuff is incredible!!
Can't recommend this highly enough! I hope this video encourages people to go check this stuff out. I learned so much from the miners the day I was there. It's one hell of a geologic field trip!
I know, every time I talk to someone that is mining an area and I ask questions I learn so much.
Wow ilovw the yellow, red jasper that looked like a cave.
Try knapping that obsidian. Lol
Thanks for your passion for the knowledge and experience that is the art and beauty of wut you do.
Jealousy of you is a understatem😢
Man what a great video! I had a really similar experience with Bob Otteson and the Easter Blue turquoise mine. Strangely it seems that wherever you go the people are the real gems!
Please consider Nevada as a destination. We have black fire opal and more turquoise than you can shake a stick at!
I would love to spend some time in Nevada!
Never pass up a good rock shop or a private mine showing. I love picture jasper so this one was extra special. Be happy, safe and stay healthy😷⚒
Oh yeah! Some shops like this are extra good.
Nice video.
Great mine! Great episode. I watched the whole thing. I like the long ones. Perfect for watching while I was cleaning petrified wood off for the tumbler today!
Some of those slabs at the end look like Moab Utah in the scenery. Great slabs for cabs indeed!
Thank you! Not all the videos will be long but I like to think that when they are its worth it! The pictures really do look like southern Utah.
Excellent video, thank you for sharing...
Thank you for coming by to check it out.
Awesome stuff!!
Very interesting also awesome video I look forward to all of your videos.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this location with us, I think I know now where my picture jasper in my belt buckle came from. My great aunt lived in Wasco most of her life and likely gifted it to my grandfather!
Dude that's amazing to hear, I noticed the belt buckle the other day, now I can make my own!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding makers challenge!
You can take my buckle and cast it if you want, might be a fun challenge to replicate such an epic piece.
That is some beautiful jasper. One of the rocks you showed looked like the jasper had translucency! Very Nice!
I know some of it does!
Awesome video man
Thank you!
Feather River Lapidary club is using China Hollow Picture jasper this year as the rock for their world wide tumbling contest. I just received a few lbs of tumble sized pieces. Can’t wait to see how they turn out. I’m pulling out a couple to cab!
Good luck!
I am very glad that you are sharing your work with us I would love to own a piece of my own
I'm glad you liked it.
That was awesome! So very different, but all very beautiful rocks. Can't wait to see what you do with the material you collected.
Yeah it was a lot of fun and I have been cutting it up for future projects.
What an amazing video! The size of those pieces is just jaw-dropping amazing. That was some really beautiful material. Thank you so much for the journey and making an extended video. I loved every minute of it.
The video really doesn't do it justice.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding That's always the way but I was just drooling!
Jared, what an awesome video/adventure. That material is absolutely gorgeous! I think I now have another place to add to my literal bucket-list, :-). That piece you set back at ~19:15 was a keeper.
Love that jasper. Especially the bright red and yellows. The one you showed looked like a fire rose. I just saved this video so I can remember to go there someday. I don't think I have ever seen you collect so much rock from one area.
Oh I know, when a rare opportunity presents itself you just gotta take it! This Jasper is hands down amazing.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding I agree whole heartedly.
Love your channel. Very informative.
Thank you very much!
Baby monitor? lol. Brilliant!!!!!!
You should do a Q&A Livestream so we can all get to know you better man!
I have done a few of those but never live.
I was trying to look up Don, such a wonderful guy and pure Biggs genius. I'm a collector of Biggs, but my journey bright me here late. I read that he passed away a few months ago. That broke my heart. I hope the knowledge and the passion has passed down through the generations.
I think might be thinking of a different person.
He is still very much alive
Thank you!
Always love field trips! I love learning about new things and places.
Brilliant !
Thank you!
On my rock it list now
It's a good locations.
Nice :)
Jared do you ever come home and as your editing you videos see something you wish you had picked up? It seems as your camera scans the samples I am constantly saying O wait what about that one or that piece there! 😀
All the time! If only I had a real life pause button.
DAAAAAAAM!
New subscriber to your channel. Great content! Getting back into lapidary and hoping to make a show/trade fair in Madras next year to restock my sphere rough supply. Used to go through the Rufus area many years ago to visit my sister in Portland, from here in Alberta, Canada and visited with old Howard Dolph at his shop to pick up Biggs jasper and other stuff. I have a lot of Johnny Richardson tools (sphere machine, high speed sander and leather wheel from my many visits to the ranch. Will probably stop there as well if I go?
Thank you! I'm glad you like my videos!
I also have the highspeed sander and I love that machine. You should really come back for a visit.
If all goes well, we are planning for a trip around next 4th of July. Used to be the show’s coincided with a long weekend? Our route always takes us through Spokane.
Very beautiful material extraordinarily beautiful this one min 19:54
I know! So much of it was really nice.
Was this a rock rollers trip?? I just joined up this spring and I would love to go down to the mines😮😮😮 So much cool material!!❤
This was put together by a rock club in Spokane called the Rock Rollers and the do field trips like this.
@CurrentlyRockhounding I joined the club this spring and have made it to one of their field trips! Hopefully I'll make it to more!!
Whatever you want is what I want
Airtight... I know this is an old video, but I'm rewatching it again because it's a great video!
.....
I don't know how I missed it before, but at 13:21, I noticed your sleeves.. Pretty bad-ass dude! Right after you left the car, you put on a white shirt and covered them up. Do you purposely try to hide them?... You do not strike me as the kind of guy to be rockin such sweet tats!!
In the summer time I will often wear sun sleeves to protect against sunburns. I prefer it over sunblock.
Where is that third location?? It was really cool with the columns.
I’m in Oregon, can I join or meet you on one of your next trips to learn from you on what to look for? I watched your prev videos and got a mineral book and hardness test kit that you linked. So thanks for that.
Sometimes we do meet up with people but I have also put everything I know into videos and the website as well.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding thanks, any recommendations for videos on Learning how to identify different stones while rock hounding?
Make as big a square or rectangle out of the biggest and frame it as a picture.
I like that idea.
The ROUGH PROBLEM - Which way is the best way to cut it?
If you find a deposit like that, can you take a core out or would it likely fracture?
People use diamond core drills on things like this all the time, they will then take the core and core the core to make a preform for a sphere machine.
You should go to China hallow on day they do co-ed naked mining !!
What the hell are you talking about?
