Nice video. These 2020+ GM HDs are rock solid towing. People can say what they want but it’s the truth. You got to witness where the 6 speed needs another gear between 2nd and 3rd. 2nd was the gear you were in when you were at or above 5,000 rpm. When you lost down to 3000 rpm or less you were in 3rd. Now I don’t know if this is factual but I have read many times that after so many 3-2 and 2-3 shifts GM derates to prevent so much shifting. Again I don’t know if that’s actually true or just rumor but I have read that. You would have done better if you wouldn’t have let up when you started the test. On steep grades that’s hard pulls its best to go WOT before you are truly on the hard pulling part. That’s true with any gas engine too. Also the 10 speed would have locked you down on 60 mph because it would have been in 3rd gear and kept you above 4000 rpm. Grade shifting with the 6 speeds are great too. My truck shifts almost instantly when I have it in tow/haul mode.
I’ve never been impressed with what I’ve read and seen on the GM 6.6 gas trucks, even with the 10sp tranny. I bought a Ford 7.3 gas with 3.55 gears in 2020 and have been very pleased. I also have a 2001 Chevy 8.1 gas w 4.10 gears. It has remarkably similar payload and towing numbers to the 2020 Ford 7.3 and is still a good performer, better than the new 6.6 gas GM’s I would argue. Too bad GM chose to make the big gas V8’s go away. Ford made the right call and did it the right way when they introduced the 7.3 gas. For those of us that don’t tow every day and bellow 15k it’s a great option to avoid the extra costs and headaches associated with the diesels.
I tow 9k lb Toy Hauler up and down the mountains no issues. The 7.3 is nice but I feel its reliability compared to the 6.6 is lower. Plus you can't spec an XLT as nice as a similar priced Chevy LT.
Going over Donner Pass towing 10k lbs with my 22 F-250 Tremor (7.3 Godzilla) I had zero issues getting up to 65 mph and that's 8000 ft elevation. The 7.3 Godzilla is so much more of an engine than GMs gasoline equivalent!
My 10 speed 6.6 gas never went much over 4000 rpms at like 65mph pulling my camper up that same canyon, never had my foot on the floor. The 10 speed makes a big difference with those.
I’d like to see this test with the 10spd, that transmission makes a huge difference with these trucks. In my opinion, it’s the best gas engine/trans on the market currently.
I respect the Gas engines on most of the heavy duty trucks because they seem to get the job done as far as towing goes and reliability. However, I am very glad I went with a diesel for my first 3/4 ton. Watching this video and seeing the slow acceleration just gives me anxiety. I cant imagine getting around a truck and knowing I might not be able to accelerate enough to get around. I am never trying to race up a hill but when I need to pass a rig on an uphill it doesn't concern me at all. Great video! Not knocking Gas but I would feel some discomfort driving one while towing a moderately heavy load.
3:51 that’s how the L8T drives, even with the 6 speed. A lighter press will behave differently than WOP as far as shifting. When I am towing my 5th wheel, I don’t feel the need for it to change gears that drastically. I’m not pretending it’s a diesel. 2022 2500 LT 6speed. 9:52 lock out gears all the way down to 4th or 3rd if you have to. I can maintain 60mph climbing with my 5th wheel when I do that.
Damn bro, 100 degrees, and you're in a black top and hat with long pants. WTF. With these gas engines, you basically have to drive on cruise control to keep the thing going. If not, your foot will get a bit tired.
You said you would like to see more gauges for temps. I recently drove Ram 3500 with the harden karmen stereo I believe. There was a feature in it to see the temps you wanted. Maybe check one of those out
As soon as I get me a 2024 ford f350 XLT tremor with the HO powerstroke v8. We can see how it would compare to a ram 3500 high output Cummins with 11,000 pounds up a 6% grade
The L8p crate motor from Chevy produces 523 hp and 543 ft-lbs torque, so yes it’s got more to give. If your at 2700 rpm at 50mph, you should probably pull it down a gear manually.
Loved the video. Why don't you manually lock out the higher gears so the transmission isn't continually searching between 2nd. and 3rd. Lock out the higher gears and you will be able to hold 5000 rpms at 60 mph.
Whatever you say. I tow 10k plus at over 10,000 ft with this truck while overheated diesels are pulled over on the side of the million dollar highway trying to cool off. I’ve owned a 2017 6.7…and a 2020 GM 6.6 diesel…I now have the 6.6 gasser and will likely never go back with all the problems I had from the diesels. Growing up we pulled these mountains with 2 wheel drive gassers with 200 horsepower and 300 ft lbs of torque. 95% of diesels don’t haul anything but their fat owners.
Everyone knows about the issues diesels have. I think the takeaway from this video and title is that the 10 speed would make a big difference in how the 6.6 gasser feels. The Ford 7.3 gasser feels fine pulling a 10-11k gooseneck with a 10 speed but with 6 gears I know it would be noticeably worse. That's not to say the 6 speed can't get the job done, but it's definitely inferior vs the 10 when it comes to towing.
I don't get how these have issues. I towed 10k with a 2015 1500 with the 5.3 up 7%-10% grades for many miles straight and that thing never even seemed to care that the trailer was back there. My only limit on climb speed was the curves.
Test drove one of these. Anemic engine response. Felt like a total slug. I know it can do the job but it doesn't seem to do it particularly well, and is just zero fun to drive. That one automotive inquiries guy swears by it, and was simultaneously crapping on the Ford and something didn't seem right. @@Starbreaker666I mean, the throttle response was about the same as every other modern drive by wire vehicle out there, and the transmission was nice and smooth, but it just couldn't get out of its own way. I haven't gotten around to test driving either the Ford or GM of their newest platform but from a variety of videos and my interpretation of the other channel you mention was the same, the Ford 7.3 is the current top contender for power. However and again my interpretation of the testing automotive inquiries did on the same mountain grades with the same load, was that letting each truck do its own thing with the cruise control on while climbing, the GM did not shift up and down near as much as the Ford. For one thing that Ford had 3.55 gears while the GM has 3.73 and they both had the ten speed trans. How I interpreted that as I watched the speedo and shifting was that indeed the Ford had the power to accelerate and shift up but then could not hold the higher gear and had to shift back down and repeated that cycle, while the GM simply did not have the power to gain speed to attempt to shift up. Now had both trucks been driven "manually" and a gear chosen that the truck could hold, the Ford is going to be the winner in a speed race up a grade. Of course his Ford faltered as per the engine issue that has plagued some of those engines and can't help but not be thrilled over that. However he did get another super duty with that engine and its got the 4.30 and so far has been performing very well towing, hopefully Ford has sorted out their valve train issue.
