From WWII, there is a story asked of soldiers how they knew who they were facing: "If we shot and the return fire is machine gunfire, they're German. If the return fire is intermittent but extremely accurate, they're British. If there is a pause and then the response is artillery, bombers, and everything you can think of, they're American."

As far as American boots-on-ground, it wasn't incredibly well-defended. There were only around 40 American troops vs. 500 Russian/Syrians. The only actual American casualty was a sprained ankle (legitimately). Part of me thinks that Wagner were being dumped into a meat grinder by the Kremlin to test our response time/capabilities/tactics, as they've shown they literally do not care. We threw everything at them to both throw off that analysis, and to let them know that we're overwhelmingly (even disproportionately) prepared for anything they can think of hitting us with. Also I keep saying "us" as in the Americans. I obviously wasn't there. I was probably cleaning out my gutters or pooping or something at the time.

"I was assured there were no Russian forces in the area, so I gave the command that they were to be annihilated. And they were." - General "Chaos" Mattis.

the second phone call probably went "do you really want to do this again?"

  • @renski1492

The version I heard from a colleague confirms the phone call to the Russians before the engagement began when the Russians assured the American commander that there were no Russian troops in the area. I understand that to have been common at this time to avoid direct conflict. However, I was told on good authority that there was a phone call after the conclusion of the engagement from the Americans to the Russians in which the Americans simply said “We confirm. No Russian troops in the area.”

Of course there were ties with Russia. Wagner is their proxy army

I love how everyone says America is all about oil. You know we protect your oil as well.

  • @andrew6978

Prigozhin opened up about this later, apparently Shoigu left Wagner high and dry that day after promising air support and later rubbed his nose in it when they met in Moscow. They then went on to have a very famous public feud.

"Don't touch my stuff." Habitual Line Crosser as America. He ain't wrong.

When the US military basically says "Please don't make me kill you." it's not a display of weakness, it's a promise wrapped in a logistics request. Someone has to hump in more ammo afterwards, and do the recovery/forensics.

Yankee here, feeling flattered by the respect you've shown to our military. That respect goes both ways- I'm honored to count the Royal Marines as our allies. Your name is said with reverence here, and I know you can get the job done.

  • @Jimbo922L

Brother, we are glad to have you on our side as well. Props to our brothers from across the pond.

The amount of firepower the US threw at that convoy is staggering. The artillery alone, plus 4 Apaches, plus at least 1 AC-130 gunship, plus Reapers, plus F-15s and F-22s as well as B-52s.

  • @scottcampbell4678

To our Royal Marine, America knows we are not alone. We have Great Britain as one of our allies.

  • @midgetydeath

Reminds me of a video I saw recorded in either Afghanistan or Iraq. A sniper was taking shots at American soldiers from a hill. So, the officer in charge made a call and F-35s blew up the hill. He said “That’ll teach ‘em to shoot at my men.”
