    I am an American and the way I see it is, if the military is allowing this much information out, this is outdated and we already have better.

      For sure we wouldn’t be advertising stuff that isn’t known through espionage and/or where they already have better technology in it but this was what was originally put into the aircraft. They definitely won’t tell the most important pieces of information to ensure that when it actually faces combat the enemy won’t have any idea what happened to them. I remember when the F-117 Nighthawk came out and was unveiled to the public at an air show (on the ground where you couldn’t get within 200 feet of the aircraft and it flew into Fairchild AFB at night and left at night as well without lights on to ensure nobody knew its capabilities) and there was tons of MP’s around to ensure nobody took any pictures of the aircraft.

      More like it’s already been used for awhile. I remember seeing the f117 nighthawk parked out front of a hangar before it was ever common knowledge. Turns out it was already in service for at least a few years at that point.

      The US uses a deterrent method for warfare.
      They do share a lot of the information they have because their stuff is just plain better than everyone else’s, plus they have more of it than everyone else does.
      It’s a flex designed to intimidate possible enemies.
      Yes, they do have various things people do not know about, but they have no issues sharing stuff that they do have.
      Because knowing about it doesn’t mean you can prevent them using it nor do you understand how the US would operate it in a war situation. US tactical doctrine still remains top secret and is always evolving.
      So no, I very much doubt that these things are obsolete or “bad” compared to other stuff they have…this stuff is just bloody scary and meant to be scary.

    It's amazing that the B-52 Stratofortress is 70 years old now and it has outlasted every bomber designed to replace it. The B-52 is currently being upgraded and modernized to take the platform to the 2050's it could be the first aircraft in history to have a 100 year service life.

      Pretty sure it's going to get to 100 years of service. It's all about payload. It can carry whatever it wants to, unstealthily of course. All weapons it carries would be standoff. Namely, cruise missiles. It just needs to fly close enough to the target. Typically that's 1,300 to 1,500 miles.

    The B-21 is both the latest stealth bomber and the world's largest combat drone. It is designed to be used both manned or unmanned.

      Now they need to develop an armored robot or a control mechanism that can sync to a remote pilot, as if he’s right in the cockpit, and he can fly the plane remotely. not simply with a joystick.

      I don’t think he caught that part, as they essentially mentioned it in passing. Seems like something he would’ve definitely commented on had he heard it or realized what was said. The fact it can be flown from the ground has to be scary for any adversary. That’s a very menacing characteristic of the deadliest aircraft in existence. They’re currently working on an AI program to add to fighter jets, which will change warfare drastically. An AI “powered” fighter jet will know everything with 100% precision. That’s terrifying. Especially if they decide all humans are enemies 😂

      @@clinthowe7629 You don't need that. You tell the B-21 where it needs to be and it goes there.
      You send it out with several "loyal wingmen" drone aircraft. They shoot down anything that might attack the B-21 so the bomber can keep going straight to the target.

    as a truck driver who had a very high security clearance and specialized in "sensitive" cargo (past tense ) I once delivered some missiles to a AF tarmac loading directly not an f 117 about a month before it was declassified some one with a lot of medals laughed at me as I was looking and said "shit son we had these in the air in 69 you think the R&D boys have just been sitting around since then you should some of the stuff in the closet"

      A lot of military equipment and weapons are classified. Heck most of the stuff they tell us about right now has already been used for 20+years. It’s amazing what they have that the general public don’t know about. Trust me the stuff they show us is old technology. In 20 years they may show us what they are using today.

      In 1972, I was the head of Electronics Maintenance and Repair at an NSA/ASA spy and satellite warfare site.
      To this day, no info on that site or mission has ever been released.
      I had to swear to not reveal any info on that site and mission for 40 years.
      I can only talk about the mission with written permission from NSA. Guess what NSA does not give out?
      When they did my clearance background check, as I was in college at that time, they went through my little town of 464 people, talked to just about everyone all the way back to my grade school bus driver.

    The original design of the B2 did not have the multi-faceted tail. That was a last minute modification to allow it to operate at low level instead of high altitudes. This was done because Airforce brass didn't trust stealth technology. In fact, the original B2 tail was almost identical to the B21.

    If I'm remembering what I read correctly, one of the giant aspects that won the B-21 the contract was the low cost and ease of maintenance. Part of the reason it took so long to develop was because they wanted it to be made from parts of other planes, military and not, so parts would be cheaper and easier to source, since the infrastructure was already built, and parts were already needed for other things, so production could be shared across more airframes.

      There was also the material science. The new radar absorbent material is SIGNIFICANTLY better. It’s cheap to maintain and can withstand harsh environments like salt air without requiring time and money intensive maintenance.

    7 years isn’t a long time in the Avaition defense industry the F-35 was conceived in something like 1995. It went it service in 2015, and won’t be fully capable till Block 4 comes around in 2030. So 35 years.

      American tech superiority is a weapon all by itself. When the US says "Oh we have this..." and you are one of our opponents, you HAVE TO start developing your own version and your own counter-measures or you risk us walking all over you. It DOES NOT MATTER if we are lying! We've pulled enough amazing tech wins, and we spend so much money on this stuff every year that you have to assume we're serious every single time.
      I don't know if there's a real estimate of how much defense money we have forced our opponents to waste on things that we lied about, or where we lied about its capabilities or where we just showed you last year's version and the new one... well we'll tell you about it in 5 years. It's a weapon that we use all the time.

      Remember all the flak that the F35 got in the beginning? We are starting to see the plan come together because this thing can unleash all those missiles while the F35 can independently guide all of them to individual targets. They were designed to work in tandem.

    I have seen these stealth aircraft in person and they are extraordinary. In fact, they are spooky and will scare almost anyone. Their black color isn't just dark; there is almost not depth perception. In the air, the planes can turn in such a way as to virtually disappear to the onlooker. These planes are meant to get the job done and are likely to do it.

      Right! Its not just black paint. Their coating is very expensive, designed to absorb radar, an segment of electromagnetic waves, similar to visible light.
      So this makes sense with its peculiar visual characteristics that make it visually difficult to track

      There is a video of a B2 doing a flyover a street fair. The thing looked like a hovering silent flying saucer and only made a sound when it was right on top of the person with the camera.

      Per the video, this will eventually fully replace the B-1 and the B-2, meanwhile Grandpa Buff will remain until its expected retirement in 2405 after helping the NCC-1701-F on some missions and watching it retire also.

      I would much rather see a successor to the B-52. I call it the B-53.
      It's basically the same plane as the B-52 but around half the size. It carries half the bombs and uses half the crew. Much more modern of course, and easier to maintain.
      Since the B-53 is smaller, it can take off from any runway. You don't need a 23 mile long runway or whatever like the B-52.
      Since it can take off from anywhere, have them take off much closer to the target. You get faster turnaround, and more bombs on target in a 24 hour cycle.

      @@orlock20When you decide to carry cruise missiles, you put 90% of your payload into propulsion, and only 10% into warhead and guidance. The B-21 can put 100% of its payload into warhead and guidance. To put it another way, the 20 B-2s would have the same effect of 200 similar aircraft carrying cruise missiles.

    B-21 just went into small scale production like last week, which is amazing since the project is ahead of schedule and under budget. The first test flights were earlier this year with the first prototypes.

    The revealing ceremony did not show the back of the plane. That’s why you keep seeing differences in the rendering of the trailing edge of the wing. They only pulled the B21 halfway out of the hanger, and only allowed front view photos at the revealing. That was how they intended to reveal the B2 as well, but a savvy reporter rented a plane, and was able to photograph the B2 from different angles. That’s why they only pulled the B21 partially out of the hanger.

      Yeah, the longer they can keep things secret the better.
      When we first made supersonic jets we kept the tail sections hidden too. With prop jobs, you could have partial flight controls on the tails. These didn't work well at SS speed.
      To make it work, you needed the whole tail to move as one. It would be very obvious how we overcame this problem from a picture, so the tail itself was classified.

    Basically a bunch of military contractors come up with designs and propose it to the military and whoever makes the best case for their plane gets the contract to R&D and build the plane

      That's not true at all.
      The military starts by pointing out a need. The F-22 can do this and the B-2 can do that, but there's this big capabilities gap RIGHT HERE that we need to fix.
      The Air Force makes a list of requirements for the future miracle flying machine, and the defense contractors have their engineers come up with proposals. Eventually they need a working prototype to seal the deal. The requirements for the B-21 are feakishly insane, and a company managed to meet those requirements. Game on.

    B-21 just started flying in November. 1 prototype with 6 more in production. I believe it last flew 2 days ago. Should be in service 2025ish.

    The Air Force began planning for the B-21 in 2011 and awarded the major development contract in 2015. The B-21 made its first flight on 10 November 2023. It is expected to enter service by 2027.

      Read the article. The U.S. Airforce confirmed that was the second "confirmed" flight of the aircraft. The article also stated that more than likely there have been other unconfirmed flights.     The other advantage of the B-21 is its range. It is supposed to be capable of flying to its target no matter where in the world and part way back without refueling. Where the B-2 has to refuel several times to make it so the enemy can track where the tankers are flying and have a good idea where the B-2 would be.

    The B-21 took its first official flight a few weeks back. Can’t remember the exact date but some RUclipsrs did cover the first flight and there’s video and pictures showing it up in the air. It’s slightly smaller than the B2 Spirit.

    The B-21 is not so much an all new platform. Its more so, all the generational updates, manufacturing techniques, and the ability to make several for the price of the original B2. This is important, since it is more advanced in every way, but substantially easier to support, and way less expensive. thus, more numbers, faster production... and its still generations ahead of anything else out there (even from other western nations.) China is and will always be a paper Tiger.

      Yeah, the facts come down to the fact that China and Russia, being our nearest competitors as far as possible rivals or enemies are concerned, simply do not have the ability to produce any significant amount of highly advanced items like this. Their corruption runs too deeply and their doctrines are made specifically for conscript wave throwing. They decided not to specialize like Europe and the US. In addition, they simply lack the personnel with experience that we have. The US learned from WWII to get the best minds into their defense sector to always stay ahead. We also learned to know everything down to how many grams of mayo the dictators put on their sandwiches so we can always be overprepared.
      While I am not militaristic as a person and would only fight in self-defense, I do give credit where credit is due. The US is extremely good at its job. Between China and Russia, China is probably better. However, our allies are far better than both of them despite their size. In general, a professional military is simply going to be far more effective and have far harder to break morale than an untrained conscript military.

(its redesigned based on feedback /or technology leaps) either production, design, or otherwise.) sorry for confusion.
      Point being.. B2 did the heavy lifting so that cost and many other things could be optimized on the B-21.

    Former B52 crew chief at Lackland AFB and I can honestly say I am not surprised that the B52 lives on. Payload is definitely a game changer. The weapons bay is massive.

    The Government issued a Request For Proposals (RFP), very classified, to the very few firms US who had the wherewithal and facility clearance level to do this. That RFP didn't specify a design, rather it set out the requirements for a LOT of things, but the biggest examples would be bomb load carried, cruising speed, max speed, radar signature, max range, etc. Then they bid, and the bidders will spend millions, maybe tens of millions, on the bid, because if you win the prize is so big. The Northrop design has built in advantages like having no tail - reduces weight and radar signal. Basically the entire plane is creating lift, and carrying engines, fuel, bombs, systems, or pilots. The efficiency leaves more weight carrying to be dedicated to other things, such as fuels and bombs. Super-efficient shape that happens also to be naturally strealthy. When you see a side on shot, it looks like a bird of prey, and the hump mimics their body shape when they are diving on prey.

    whats meant by 25 years to build it, refers to all the R&D that went into stealth technology in regards to all stealth, ( mainly by Lockheed Martin Skunkworks),,, , the F-35, the B2 Spirit stealth bomber, and now the B-21

    The F-35 has a radar crossection the size of a golf ball. The B-2 Spirit has a crossection probably the size of a marble and reduced thermal plume as it can glide to target. The B-21 will most likely have the detective size of a bb. Along with autonomous control, you could pilot a squadron of them and hit simultaneous targets with a single crew...or just a preset mission package.

    My ex wife works for Northrop Grumman. When we were getting divorced she was working on the bid package for the B21. The way it works, is all of the different defense contractors capable of building a platform to the specs the DOD wants, will submit a bid. The government gives 2 or 3 contractors a certain amount of money to produce a prototype, and the government pics the platform that meets the specs. A lot of times the other companies will sue for different reasons etc.

    One of the reasons the B-21 was built to fly unmanned was to extend its range and capability by flying at 60,000+ feet. (Less gas is burned at that altitude.) The bomber is still piloted remotely by B-21 pilots sitting behind a console. (Referred to now as the "Chair Force." I'm told they've enhanced its radar absorbing material (RAM) among other things. Being in the Air Force I regularly flew into Whiteman AFB and saw the B-2 up close and personal (from a couple hundred yards) while my own aircraft was being refueled. I always enjoyed passing through Whiteman AFB for that very reason.

    They kind of glossed over it in this one, but the new 'dial a size' nukes you can program to be as small as 5 Megatons and up to 340 Megatons. So a field tactical nuke to a city buster, depending on how the weapons officer programs the bomb. That is mind blowing...

    To answer your question at 6:34, the DOD basically announces to the open market that they are going to award a contract to the company with the best pitch based on the requests/specs/price points etc of the DOD. All serious participating companies get money for the R&D as part of the contract competition and make their pitch and the DOD then selects one and awards the actual production contract

    I maintained the C130 Flight Sim at McChord AFB back in the 1980's while serving in the USAF.
    Amazing how much of a flying tank that aircraft was, where it could land and takeoff.

    The way the US military does contracts is that they put out details of what they want the vehicle to be capable of (with more details to be shared once the contract is awarded and security can be maintained). Various companies put forward their designs, and generally the military will pick two designs to advance to the prototype stage. The prototypes will compete and whichever design scores highest based on those results will be selected to move into production. Seven years from concept to entering service is actually pretty fast.

    from what I understand about American War Tech... they use it for 1--15 years, then it "starts" getting leaked out slowly. This B-21 raider was probably used in back in Iraqi Freedom or further back than that.

    The tail of the B2 was always supposed to look like the Raider's tail as it is better for radar cross section. The fly-by-wire flight systems at the time of the B2's development weren't advanced enough to reliably control the B2 without the additional control surfaces given by the extra notch in the tail. This was, in part, due to the lack of vertical stabilizer and rudder on the aircraft. Guess they solved that problem...

      yes and no. the reason for all of that was all of the additions the air force wanted, and added on. which caused the size of the plane to expand. B-21 was the original design they came up with. without all of the added nonsense Air Force generals added. like low altitude flight, and others.

    One of the reasons the B-2 was so expensive was they changed it at the last minute. It's subsonic, and it's unarmed and they were worried if anyone saw it and launched planes against it, it would be a sitting duck.
    So the designers changed the B2 and added more triangles to add control surfaces--the B2 used to look like the B-21
    But the B-21 will carry air to air missiles so it can fight back

    The change in the shape of the wing is due to having fewer engine exhausts. That triangular edge hides the heat signature of the engines. The B-2 had 4 engine exhausts, the B-21 only has 2. It also has the added advantage of being a better lifting body so less wing is needed to provide lift, further reducing cost and radar cross section. The electronics and communications upgrades are likely akin to the F-16 to F-35 differences. F-35s have networked fire control, target acquisition/ information and C2, F-16s don't. Likewise, B-2s don't have any of those networked information systems (setting as they entered operational status prior to those being developed).

    Defense contracts begin with an RFQ. The requirements are provided within the RFQ and competitors are selected based on capabilities. The competing bids are evaluated for quality and cost and the winning bidder is selected.

    Lastly, the B-21 is currently in production while the earliest airframes are undergoing pre-operational tests. This is very normal, essentially test pilots are making sure everything is working properly and any issues get worked out while the assembly line begins to ramp up so adjustments that are needed can be implemented. The first B-21 to fly was named “Cerberus” - you can find footage of it on RUclips. You’ll notice a little antenna sticking out of it that you don’t see on the design shown in this video - that’s a sensor for flight data.
    These test flights are expected to continue until around 2027, which is a normal - perhaps even ambitious- timeline.

    From someone that worked in a US Federal agency and other family members working at other Federal government agencies, I can tell you that the way contracts are obtained and how government agencies come about choosing which platforms they choose, is nothing like you might think or see as common since choosing of what will be best or better than our opposition.

    While it’s true that some of the technology is outdated by the time an aircraft enters production, the B-21 is specifically designed to be modular precisely so it can be easily upgraded with state of the art tech.
    Also, keep in mind that a lot of the development time includes studies on future warfare and the capabilities needed in from the aircraft by the time it is put into production.

    The plane manufacturers have pretty much always done this, but it wasn't public. They are selling a product to the military, they get a development contract (make the thing), show the thing off (video), then get a production contract (equip us with the thing). The money is in the production, development is roughly at cost. There are no guarantees you will get a production contract, but if it is a niche product you are probably gonna get at least a partial contract.

    Electrical engineer here. I admit I don't have military experience or any particular military knowledge, but, as a general principle I don't want to make everything depend on digital assets. Digital is compact and can be powerful, but, people, digital is fragile. If I were an enemy I would focus on disabling the digital functions. (I am sure others have thought of that). My question would be.... can these behemoths glide any distance in the event of loss of power? I have no idea.

    The cost savings is done partly by making the focus of the flight high altitude. Since now it is sole purpose designed to be used from altitude as opposed to low level bombing done by the first generation..The wings had more serrations at the back when it was required to do low level missions

    It's a bidded contract. The government sends out a request for proposals (RFP) that details the requirements, and companies submit designs that meet those requirements. The one that has the best characteristics (including estimated unit cost while meeting all objectives) gets a contract to develop their concept. If that concept is successful, they'll get a contract for production.
    Government contracts are very complicated and there are entire companies that provide expertise in navigating those requirements for other companies so they don't have to have an entire division devoted to the process of getting government contracts.

    "Designed as an optionally manned bomber." This means it can be an unmanned drone. The F-22 became obsolete when a drone fighter capable of pulling 20 'Gs' was put into service. It is why we don't make the F-22 any more.

    the way to win the contract is basically "this is what we want, how would you solve the problem" and the company that comes up with the cheapest option that is shown through simulations, mathematical proofs, and prototyping to be fully functional with minimal training usually wins

    I once participated in a defense contract bid. It was a long time ago, so I don't remember the specific organization. Probably DARPA? Whatever. My experience was they were looking for a personnel carrying design which would fit specific criteria. It had to carry four people, it had to fit in a 53 foot standard semi trailer even if disassembled, and it had to be able to VTOL, and some other things I don't recall. We were designing a craft to that spec, but even if we completed it, we couldn't manufacture it, so we didn't submit a proposal.
    If you do get accepted, they work with you directly to produce. I imagine almost all contracts get eaten up by the big defense contractors. Anyway, that's what I know from my limited experience.

    The B-2 originally had the same tail design of the B-2. The saw tooth tail of the B-2 was added when the US wanted the capability to fly at low altitude. It provided more flaps to allow this. The change to the original design would be an indication that the B-21 will be a high altitude bomber.

    Gov't contracts work as follows: Gov't issues RFP (request for proposal) they give a list of requirements,: distance on full load of fuel, air-to-air refueling, max weapons capacity, radar and targeting capabilities, threat detection on min distance, manned un-manned or both, radar cross section, etc. and cost per aircraft to achieve everything listed. each company that the request is given to submits their design for how they will achieve the requirements along with preliminary designs etc. Then the gov't chooses the cheapest that meets their minimum requirements. It's more complicated than this, but that's the gist.

    Ok so in choosing which company they chose for this.. They told both companies to give us plans and build one, whichever they like best and works best gets the contract. I remember quite a long time ago they actually made a show out of it on TV and we got to see both designs before they chose. The contest was still between these same two companies and Lockheed won. A few years later they started using it.
