NOTE: This is just a broad generalization of why some US weapons are named after Native American tribes and leaders is often due to the two being once enemies and the amount of respect the two share which other. We have forces in Government that want a weak America. This is why they canceled the F-22, many other. If they could they would get rid of the A-10. It's at the top of the list, because it's one of the best ground supporting planes in history. And is wanted by ground troops. This is the reason why they keep canceling our top technology.
What we've seen in Ukraine led the Army to conclude that no scout helicopter is going to be capable enough to justify risking lives when nearly-as-capable drones are available instead.
Hello Buddy. Loving your videos. Former British Army lad here who grew up just up the road from Lympstone. Awesome content, good vids and great topics. I Will try and free up some time to watch your live streams. Keep up the work bud. If you ever pop down to Devon again, give us a shout and i'll get some beers in and meet you in person. Also does this not remind you of a green version of Chopper from AirWolf?
The thing about the Comanche is that it directly led to the stealth hawk like the ones used on the bin laden raid. It makes me wonder what they've been doing since then - the Comanche was back in the 90s.
They've been experimenting with different types of stealth helos. I heard talk of a stealth chinook but that didn't seem to go anywhere. Currently they are working on whats basically a modern Comanche named the Invictus.
I love watching his face as it lists more impressive advanced features and he is trying his hardest to figure out just why it failed to make it to the production line.
A big issue of getting replacements and such is building an air frame that can handle over all weight, have the survivability, along with having the much needed hardware. After all of that, people need to have a firm idea of what they need so something can be built.
the reason the helicopters are named after Indian tribes is because the Indians fought had and were tough so they renamed the choppers after them because they are designed to fight hard obviously.
3:55 Kind of. It flew like crap, but the level of stealth provided by that plane was very much real, and to this day of high quality. It was phased out because we made better stealth aircraft that can fky better and hold more payload. Even then no other country in the world has succeded at producing a true stealth aircraft. Their closest attempts are still more radar visible than the f117 by a considerable margin
Like stated earlier in the video - the U.S.S.R. ( Union of Soviet Socialists Republic ) lost power and became Russia ; when that happened the need for expected military systems decreased so this program was one of those that got terminated
I love that U.S is always trying to outshine its adversaries but I feel like we go about it the wrong ways sometimes. Yeah it wasn't a needed heli and yeah it had problems. But some of our equipment just doesn't need replacements. But man I'd be happy as hell if we had a halo pelican
The Successor Scout helicopter program had some cool helicopters, including the Bell 360 Invictus which looks like a RAH 66 little sister. They canned the program in favor of drones as of 2 ish months ago after watching the Ukraine War closely.
For the most part they are pretty proud of tribal names being attached to the military equipment. The only people that seem to get upset about using tribal names for warrior combative equipment or a NFL team. They get upset about the Name of the Washington Redskins. It didn’t seem to upset the coach William Dietz who may or may not have been the Sioux nation. But I have heard interviews with American Indians from different tribes who aren’t upset about the old mascot because they are at least recognized by the American people
Like in the TV series ( Air Wolf ) the helicopter that was { Air Wolf } and what it's capabilities were ; if that could only be made in real life. The Army would have a very formidable helcopter that maybe could be the only one needed.
I have a buddy that was really REALLY into flight sims, he even bought the flight controllers, throttle, and rudder pedals. He crushed on this game. There is no doubt that he could fly a plane, now nerves and "g-forces" might get him but I think he could give it a go.
The US Military names their helicopters after the Apache and the Comanche because they were the most violent and feared tribes, so much so that I believe they were completely wiped out.
I remember when i was a like 10 learning about native americans and my teacher asked me if i knew who the comanche were and i said a military helicopter
To be realistic, 30 billion wasn't just used on that helicopter. In the 80's and 90's the US military and the Military industrial complex was notorious for using funds from 1 project for another using it as a patsy for spending and the Senate allows it.

Could have been managed better yes. But these types of projects tend to not got approved for funding without plenty of pork for contractors in the states with flexible lawmakers.
Nice video on a helicopter program that was cancelled, as has the newest program to try and get something to replace the scout helicopter FARA program as well effective in 2024. So there is no new development program any longer. There was another attack helicopter being developed at the same time as the Cobra attack helicopter AH-1 types it was the AH-56 Cheyenne, it was being developed by Sikorsky during the Vietnam war due to the fact the AH-1's had some kind of software issue apparently. The is a video out there about as well. Loving your content, it is nice to see a variety of types of stuff being shown by you here. It is not that helicopters are hard to upgrade it is certain people believed that helicopters are no longer necessary when drones can do the same job cheaper.

Pretty sure that stealthy helicopters will be needed in the coming 15 years; drones are making it really cheap to get a warhead to the target, while still being very effective, and drone swarms would be a helicopter's nightmare
Helicopter blade technology is maxed out, the blade going forward is move faster then the helicopter and the blade going back is slower then the helicopter, there is a point the blade going forwards is moving through the air quicker makes a pressure wave that disrupts the airflow at the tip. This is a quick and easy explanation. 250 miles per hour is the minimum speed. The v-22 Osprey was going to the next great thing but it has its own problems.
