  • The new style Full Face Snorkel mask vs. the traditional snorkeling mask and snorkel, which is better??? Full face snorkel masks are gaining in popularity but are they as good as an old style snorkeling mask and snorkel? We compare both types of snorkeling masks across several categories and decide what are the pros and cons of each mask.
    Personally I always recommend using a traditional mask and snorkel instead of a full face snorkeling mask is someone is learning how to snorkel. The traditional mask is safer and more reliable and can always be used for Scuba diving or Freediving later. Learn how to snorkel underwater in my other videos.

    I´ve been snorkeling for around 10 years, bought a 'high end' full-face mask 2 years ago, and I can´t go back to the tradicional one, No way! Unless when I need to go deeper. My full face mask is far, far, far more comfortable and the field of view is far better. Breathing with my mouth and my nose is priceless as well.

      @@JoeOceansideI’ve been snorkeling since I was around 6. I got one of those full face masks and hated it. The reason for me is it’s too buoyant so it made it way harder to dive deep. And deep is we’re all the cool stuff is. For me the traditional one saves space, money (depending on how good your snorkel is), and just general freedom. You can move around way easier it’s way easier to un-fog and better in general. So I’m for team original.

    Thanks for this video…it was informative. I’ll likely have both because they do have advantages for different environments.
    One minor quibble that I have would be your last point about “experienced snorkelers” or others not respecting the full-mask..seriously, what mature person gives a F about peer pressure like that. Each person needs to make a decision based on relevant things like utility, etc…if a full-mask makes someone more confident and comfortable, that is def the set-up to go for…any dork that judges a person based on their gear is, well, a dork.

    • @earlgrey2130
      @earlgrey2130 Год назад +2

      It's because "experienced" snorklers are trying to keep newer snorklers from making mistakes. People have died from using full face masks. That alone should be a reason not to use one. And there are a million details where full face masks just give you a shitty experience and train you to do everything wrong (like breathing through your nose, when you need the nose closed to equalize).
      Full face snorkle masks are a fad where people who don't know better are sold shit products. THAT is why they're looked down upon. We just want everyone to be safe, have a good time and learn how to dive the right way. And that means using the right equipment. There is a reason the only people who use full face snorkle masks are complete beginners. Because they don't know what they don't know. Otherwise they wouldn't touch that crap with a ten foot pole.

    Good video. Another point in favor of traditional masks: you can order prescription lenses to replace the plain glass lenses. Most companies have them in half increments, like choosing readers at the drug store. That makes a huge difference to those who are more than a little near or far sighted.

    • @karoljub
      @karoljub 2 года назад +5

      +1. Proper sight is really an important aspect. Few more details on the subject
      1. - Many traditional masks have separate (and replaceable) left and right eye glasses, so one can mount lenses with different correction factor for each eye. Some people need that.
      2. - I hear from many divers who wear glasses that finding mask glasses with anything other than basic mono-focal lenses is huge hassle. I'm not sure if mask lenses for astigmatism and other more advanced types are unavailable, just hard to find, or something else, but one should not assume same availability as with glass lenses without researching it up.
      3. - It is possible to wear contact lenses under both traditional and full face mask. I know many divers who do this. But if water starts leaking inside, shut your eyes before the water reaches them. Otherwise you risk a lens falling out of your eye and maybe even damaging the eye in the process.
      4. - It's even possible to wear actual glasses under a traditional mask. (Not sure about full face ones. Maybe.) And yes, I wouldn't believe it either if I haven't seen it with my own eyes. But if you carefully pick glasses frame and a traditional mask frame which fit/work well together (and work well with your nose), the mask can actually hold the glasses in place. You would need to remove glasses ear hooks, and you probably want to replace them with some (very thin) band to hold them in place while you're putting the mask on or fiddling with it in the water. But yeah, it's possible, several years ago I was diving with an older guy who actually went through the trouble of setting all of that up for himself, and he was even diving with that setup, not just snorkeling. I would assume this method having even more potential to be dangerous than wearing contact lenses under a mask, I'm not recommending it at all, but it's interesting it's possible.

    Accidents happen when you misuse the equipment, full face masks are made for surface swimming only not for diving.
    As you will always check your boat before going at sea, you will always check your diving equipments before going in the water. It’s just common sens.
    Use equipment related to your use, surface swimming: full face mask, deeper diving: conventional face mask with snorkel with which you can equilize ear pressure by pinching your nose.

    I've actually been using a full face mask for years now and as long as you get one made in Italy and not from Japan or China, the quality is so good that you don't have to worry about any of those concerns about mishaps and safety issues you mentioned. The quality is very high. I too have used it as low as 15 to 20 feet and have not experienced the issues you mentioned with depth either. Yes it pulls up a bit but nothing that causes a problem. Lastly someone mentioned needing to go with traditional if you need a prescription lens. I purchased mine from See the Sea, where they make prescription inserts that go inside for your exact prescription...not a stock lens like most standard swim masks. They match you prescription exact as it's basically a pair of glasses that clips inside the mask, so if you have astigmatism or bifocal or prism...they can make it. They also have a model that has a strap clip so you don't have to readjust the strap every time you use it. Very good product. You just have to make sure like any mask that you buy quality. I wouldn't suggest ever buying any mask that starts at the low end of cost that you mentioned. Both types of masks shouldn't be bought if you are paying less that 50 dollars because that most likely means you are buying an inferior product.

    You explained the differences and safety concerns very well. I’m a PADI-certified advanced open water scuba diver who dives with a full-face mask. I would never suggest a full-face snorkel mask to ANYBODY., especially a young child or mentally challenged person. If that mask ever floods, the wearer could drown if he lacks the awareness and calm to quickly remove the straps. Many people panic when water floods a mask and hits their eyes, even in a conventional mask. I would have presented safety as the first issue in the video, since it’s the most critical subject.
    I prefer diving with a full-face mask, because it never fogs (regulator feeds dry air), avoids jaw fatigue from not having to use teeth to hold the regulator, and forms really well to my face (no leaks). However, I did pass PADI full-face certification following safety training for a flooded mask.
    Finally, you’re correct that a conventional mask and snorkel are much easier to pack than a full-face mask. And the conventional is much easier to clean.

      @@brandonj.9638 I bought the OTS Guardian. Ocean Reef also makes a full face mask in a few different models. Both are very comfortable to wear and do what they promise. I went with the OTS, mostly because it has a reputation of dependability among rescue squads. It also includes the surface air valve (SAV), which allows you to breathe ambient air at the surface without diminishing your tank gas. I also like the ability to disconnect the second stage regulator from the OTS mask for rinsing and servicing. For the basic Ocean Reef mask, you must pay extra (about $60) for the SAV. By the way, the SAV on the OTS is near the top of the mask, while the one the Ocean Reef is near the regulator, close to the water (which seemed problematic to me). However, Ocean Reef makes it less expensive to own a comparable full face mask. The others are more expensive than the OTS and include features I thought were unnecessary. OTS makes the Spectrum, a mask that uses your existing second stage regulator for $449 and allows you to pinch your nose for easy equalization. However, you would need to apply anti-fog to the lenses. It was really helpful that my dive shop allowed me to demo the Guardian and Neptune in a pool. Finally, I recommend that if you do purchase a full face mask, you take part in safety training for a flooded mask via your preferred agency. Good luck!

    I have used full face mask for surface snorkeling at Maldives and I found it very comfortable and easy to use and breath through the nose. However one drawback with this type of mask is, when you try to dive below the surface, the volume of air trapped around your face is higher than a traditional mask. This puts a lot of pressure on your face and it is very uncomfortable.
    So for free diving when you wish to dive under water it is better to use a traditional mask. It takes some time to get used to holding the mouthpiece between your teeth and breathing through your mouth, though.

I initially did not understand why this was happening but then I realized it was because I was not getting fresh air. So just buy a good regular snorkeling mask.

    Full face mask is just a toy for kids, you just use it to watch from the surface. Once you descend you need to be able to use a normal mask without keeping the snorkel in your mouth: first rule of freediving. A full mask doesn't even allow you to equalize your eardrums. It's just a toy, and anybody tries to go down every now on, I would recommend to learn from the beginning with a normal mask, even when snorkelling.

    As someone who has used both in my experience the traditional snorkel is way better. Many times when I am even using a "high end" full face mask I have had to rip it off and gasp for air. I don't know if this is caused by a breathing problem or rebreathing my own air, but I would way rather use my traditional setup, which I know is reliable. The full face masks also often untighten fairly easily in my experience and starts leaking which can be very annoying. To sum everything up I would rather use my traditional setup because I know it is reliable and will always work

    Having used both, I have to say that my first impressions where that the full-face was really great.
    However as I snorkel a lot, the full-face really showed it's flaws very quickly.
    The full face does not allow you to dive while using it, it clamps hard against your face and creates a build up of Co2 that very quickly makes you feel giddy. When I resurfaced I had to continually take the mask off to fill my lungs with air. It's only good for surface snorkelling.
    The other real issue I had is with the straps, they quickly loose their elasticity and have to keep getting adjusted until they finally are unable to stretch any further, the four prong strap attachment is also awkward to slide your head through.
    So as I said for surface use it's OK.
    But the old system with the mouth piece is much safer to use, you can easily expel the water through the tube after surfacing and you can dive properly. Yes it fogs up, but the higher end masks are a lot better and safer. The straps are not elasticated so do not stretch.
    If your mask comes off, there is no way that you can reattach the full face whereas the old style can easily be replaced under water and the water be removed. So hands down the traditional one wins. The full face is now left on the shelf gathering dust.

    While I agree on most of these points when it comes to the average full face, I used a traditional set up for years before getting an equalizer pro full face mask and I'd never go back...
    So much more comfortable, and sturdy... i can stay out far longer without feeling fatigued. It makes the whole experience much more enjoyable as my focus is on the environment, not the gear.
    It's actually great on deep dives, I never even have to think about it... it just seals up the second i go down, and opens up the moment i hit the surface...
    It never gets water into the snorkel or the mask, never fogs up, and doesn't seem to have any buoyancy issues... the fact I can equalize the pressure really goes along way in helping it stay comfortable when exploring the bottom.
    While there are still some advantages to a traditional mask, I find the benefits of the equalizer far outweigh its drawbacks.

    • @michaelransom5841
      @michaelransom5841 Год назад +1

      @@paulfreitag7772 The Ocean Reef Aria is a good mask, but really it comes down to what works best for you.
      The four most important things to consider are
      1. is it designed to prevent you from re-breathing the same air (by far the most important consideration)
      2. does it create a comfortable seal on your face that doesn't leak.
      3. is it easy and natural to breathe in.
      4. does it have a dry top snorkel to seal out water if your head dips below the waves.
      Anything after that is just personal preferences and "extras".
      I do personally like the ability to do the Valsalva maneuver to equalize ear pressure when diving down which is what sold me on the equalizer, but if you're not diving deep then you probably won't find it that important.
      Hope that helps... Cheers!

      @Panda Rush After further consideration it would depend on the type of neck problem. Both traditional and full face reduce head turning during freestyle. Those with arthritic or neck mobility issues might appreciate that. There is more bulk with the full face. That could possibly impinge on the cervical nerves for those who have injuries due to more compression. I have not experienced that problem. It is recommended to swim freestyle with the face down rather that looking forward. The forward gaze on either traditional or full face mask might create more resistance against the water pressure against tender neck vertebrae. Hope that helps.

It is actually a very good quality, even has all the fancy functions, just has a little too big mask, so much air fits in what makes it difficult to equalize sometimes, but otherwise it is great.
