      When you snorkle you can stay on the surface of the water. I personally don't like snorkles because I think they get in the way when I try to dive down and look at the reef/wreck we are snorkeling at. Usually with snorkles water gets in them as you dive down, and you blow it out using your mouth. With these face mask you cant get rid of water without taking of the mask, and that can be a little hard especially if you are in deeper water where you are using fins. So as water builds up and carbon dioxide builds up, it might not be a fun time.

      You are just a victim blamer. Yes snorkeling with a buddy is better but dont be so naive to say you haven’t done the same, everyone has, you have to be the single most paranoid person to only swim when someone is next to you and don’t forget to bring a measuring tape because you shouldn’t be more than 5’ away from your buddy.
      If she were not using that mask she would probably be alive , regardless of the fact that she were alone or not.

    • @carlrooker
      @carlrooker 6 лет назад +101

      I Wear A Fez Now
      You are correct. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving alone can become deadly. With a partner it is far easier to overcome many problems than it is by yourself. Like becoming tired, hypothermic, or simple leg cramps. If you do it alone you have no help.
      Is the mask a problem? I have no idea. However, with a partner, she may have been saved. Without a partner she had no help.
      On occasion, most people will break this rule once in a while. That is up to them, their choice. However, there is no denying you increase your risk by going alone.

      @Gabriel Medina so do you recommend swimming, diving, or snorkelling alone? of course you don't. Also, no, I've never had a swim in open sea without someone keeping an eye on me. Your comment is profoundly stupid to say the least and has nothing to do with blaming a victim of his or her own demise. Ask the RNLI or a Life Guard and they will tell you exactly the same thing... never dive or snorkel alone, and never swim without someone keeping a watchful eye on you from a 'NEAR' distance.

    This was designed for snorkeling on top of the water, not for diving. It is difficult to submerge as there is so much air in the mask. Second, it is not designed for vigorous activity. For people who stay on top and do not exert themselves too much it works fine.

    • @brettefantomet
      @brettefantomet 6 лет назад +143

      Thats kind of the whole point of snorkels, it isn't diving, it is lying in the surface. Its basically a straw and usually a 1-way valve. If the end of the straw goes under and you inhale, you inhale water. Simple as that. Getting water out of your lungs is not simple. Water in your lungs can be painful, and you might drown right there right then, or you could drown in a hospital hours later from water still in there.

    • @mirrors8913
      @mirrors8913 6 лет назад +24

      Maybe snorkelers should make a habit of breathing slowly so if water does get in, they can swallow it instead of inhaling it.

    • @lethaldumpster2699

      Thats clearly understood, the issue is that there is minimal airflow within the mask. Instead of air going in and out of the pipe, the already breathed air floats around in the mask not letting fresh air in.
      This eventually leads to nausea and weakness, and in some cases too weak and nauseous to to be able to pull the mask off while swimming above water. I mention swimming above water because taking it off below water is very difficult due to water pressure pushing the mask tight too your face. Being so weak may make it hard to take both hands to remove the mask while using only your legs to swim. (give or take the the amount of limbs used, its still the same issue)

      pmiller 714 What are you talking about? Ocean water tastes wonderful! I actually harvest it at home with fish tanks. I put a fish in a tank without a filter and wait until it's good and ripe. Then I pour it through a funnel into one of those big water containers (making sure to scrape the flavor off the sides of the tank). Place it in the hot sun for a day and ta-da! I have some salty, squishy ocean water made fresh at home!

    I rented this type of mask on my last trip to Hawaii and I can say that it doesn't allow as much air flow as a typical snorkel setup. People that loved it seemed to only be snorkeling for quick spans of time, but when I used it for about 1/2 hour I felt nasious from lack of oxygen. Sure it's easier to put on, but I'd rather breathe so I'll never use the full face snorkel mask again.

Half an hour per session is fine but it's stretching a bit and I wouldn't do it. I did on some occasions used for lot more then half an hour but it just starts feeling congested and uncomfortable. And i am talking about the normal snorkel, not these full face ones. I have both and tbh i never experienced much issue with any

      I used it for snorkelling last year, and I nearly died from it, it was working fine but it wouldn't work properly, and I ended up starting drowning after a couple of minutes, I survived but it was heavy on the face and it was hard to swim with, I had to take it off and it took ages to get back to the beach even though I was only around 25M's away from the beach, personally for now I can't snorkel as my teeth fills my mouth with water with the 2 piece so I can't use any of them to be honest. Mainly as it's also hard to breathe on the full-faced which is why I'm not really wanting to use it.

      But no, in case the banter was lost (I'm one of those it used to be lost on, so I'm not trying to be rude, point fingers, or shame anyone; no offense was intended), I'm SCUBA certified, and we use snorkels even in deep waters before we dive down to enjoy the fishes (and yes, crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters as well :D ).
      I also know people who snorkel in what could be considered shallow water, but to others it's deep. Coral Reefs aren't always in the shallowest waters, and that's a big tourist attraction and why lots of people snorkel.
      Then there's those who need to snorkel while deep sea fishing to help secure a catch... Or in free diving where you may snorkel out to a location before heading beneath the waves without equipment...
      So, yes, people do use snorkels to dive (though not directly, but as a supplemental piece of equipment), and no, they aren't only used in shallow water. :)

    • @stevenlarratt3638
      @stevenlarratt3638 6 лет назад +42

      Weiliang Mah yes as with a conventional snorkel there is a low volume of co2 left in the tube per breathing cycle, with the mask the air you breath out does not go directly out, so as you breath in you have to breathe in not only the tube volume but also a volume of co2 left in the face section... after 20 breathing cycles the co2 level will be naturally higher. If like me you have a high co2 tollerance then this can lead to shallow water blackout if alone, a very dangerous condition that costs several deaths every year, free divers train how to deal with it and always buddy up due to this...

    These full-face snorkel masks work very well for what they should be limited to - slow, relaxed surface snorkelling. If you wish to perform breath-hold dives then you are best to use a regular mask and snorkel. Here's some of the issues for and against on these items;
    * If you do a duck-dive and submerge then the water pressure on the mask will increase and it will become tighter on your face. With a regular mask this pressure is relieved by letting some air into the mask from your nose, however, this isn't possible with these FF masks as any air expelled into them while underwater simply goes straight up and out of the snorkel. The fact that you cannot equalise the masks pressure will limit your diver to 2.5 to 3 meters as it will be too uncomfortable to go much deeper.
    * Technically there is a potential for more CO2 in the mask than with a regular snorkel. But in reality there will be little difference if you do not over-exert yourself. I have tried to cause CO2 built in the mask and can achieve this but it requires a lot of physical work and heavy, fast swimming, so don't worry about CO2 - its not an issue. Even with a regular snorkel tube you have 'dead space' where some of the air you expelled is drawn back into your lungs with the next breath. This even happens in normal breathing as your wind-pipe from lungs to your nose/mouth can never be cleared of 'used' air no matter how hard you exhale.
    * Don't fit the mask too tight out of the water, it only needs to be a snug fit as once your face hits the water the increasing pressure will push the mask tighter (as in point 1 above).
    I have one of these masks and use it almost every day in the pool for swim training and exercise and I like it. If you get one then start in the pool and find out what you can and can't do in one before taking to the sea... and you'll have fun.

    • @Berkcam
      @Berkcam 6 лет назад +5

      Yes it is perfect for the pool and for shallow open water also. If you get used to using it in the pool you will find out exactly what you can and can't do wearing it. Really, the only thing you can't do is a deep-ish breath-hold dive and there are two reasons for this; 1. There is no way you can pinch your nose closed for easy ear equalisation and 2. You cannot equalise the water pressure acting on the mask so it will start to become quite tight on your face at around 2m in depth.
      I hope this info is useful for you.

    As a dive expert I instantly saw several flaws with this mask as soon as i heard of it.
    1. It hugely increases dead space. The amount of gas exchange is decreased due to increased volume in air passage. Less fresh air per breath
    2. It prevents ear equalization
    3. It is difficult to remove in an emergency in case of flooding
    I strongly recommended to my friends who ask me about the mask not to use it.

    Full face masks vs traditional masks (I have 100s of hours of snorkeling & free-diving in very different conditions):
    1. Visibility is worse;
    2. Comfort - the same or little bit better;
    3. Protection from cold water and stinging creatures - the best I ever seen;
    4. Safety: the same. Guys, you are in (under) water, you can't breath there because you are not fish (even dolphins can't breath there!) so TAKE YOUR TIME AND GET USED TO THAT MASK, that's it. Practice first: in a swimming pool, on shallows where you can always stand on your feet, in a shower and you will have much lass chance to get in troubles (never zero).

      I'm not really arguing for or against them but what I will say is that my kids love them and use them in calm waters because they are scared of the standard snorkel. They do create a vacuum around your face (which is the point) but they are really not that hard to take on and off when you get your finger under it to break the seal. I wouldn't go as far to say it is a stupid idea when they are selling like crazy and help timid snorkelers enjoy the beauty and fun of snorkeling. I just feel like this video is a bit of fear mongering. One other point is it says 4 of 10 have died of snorkel related deaths using these new masks. Since 6 of those are from the standard snorkel setup doesn't that make those more dangerous? No, because the gear is not the problem.

    • @elismaatta

      Rob Ki You really know nothing about statistics? Maybe 10% are using those masks. Then the other 90% are using standard versions. That means 10% are standing for 40% of all deaths. That would mean they are way more dangerous.

      Rob Ki it’s co2 fatigue. With a normal snorkel trace amounts of CO2 in a normal snorkel. This full face snorkel not enough of the co2 is expelled. A normal snorkel has less space in it,the full face snorkel not only do you have to expel the co2 through the snorkel but through The Who face area. The guys wife was a swimmer, he said she was always swimming. So I’m sure she comfortable in the water and very experienced.

Even the husband didn't bash it, he simply questions whether it might of been the problem, or a contributing factor. As stated in the video, they are looking at things in "totality". Are people with certain medical issues more at risk of a problem with this design ? Has excess panic been a part of the equation in some cases ? ...etc, etc. You have to determine what the problems and factors are, then people can look toward making improved versions. The horse before the cart, not after it. Yes, the straps make it a bit more difficult to remove from your head, and if other factors (age, inexperience, ...) also are involved it could be more dangerous, as with normal snorkeling, if you panic you will open your mouth to suck in air and lose the tuba. Here this is not the case, but CO2 buildup, I don't think so, unless you hyperventilate, at which point ask yourself why you are even in the water at all.

    the issue with them is that they leak and you have to control your breathing. I got one of these when I was in florida and when I dived to grab a shell about 8ft down, the seal on the mask broke and the mask flooded. Also, having a giant mass of air on your face makes its very difficult to dive. They are great for surface snorkeling, they are not for diving. They are also really good for swimming in high swells because the mask protects your face from the water splashing against you. If you ever had to jump ship during a storm, it would be better to be wearing one of these.

    The Problem is that it is a Design which is also used in German Firefighter Masks. But Firefighters are trained to breath slow and heavy because if you breathe lightly, like most women and some men do, the air out of the lungs is not out of the snorkle so they breath the air again and again. After three breaths they will get unconcious. It is called the anatomical dead room which almost doubles with masks like these.

    Factors for the unfortunate incidents: 1. What are the brands used for those that unfortunately passed or even got saved? 2. How was it being used? 3. What where any underlying conditions? From what I noticed is that the folks shown had been using brands that do not specialize in diving equipment. I use the ocean reef aria and only feel a bit short on breath when snorkeling in the actual ocean and exerting myself. If you plan to buy, don't be cheap and buy from a reputable company that specializes.

    • @stgeorge1459
      @stgeorge1459 4 года назад

      Exactly. Ive never had a mouthful of seawater using these masks, unlike a conventional eyemask and pipe. If you go below the surface and try to breath, a valve closes and you feel the mask tighten on your face, as you can still breath. You have one more breath which is time to get to the surface, at which time the valve opens and you breath normal. Its ok to say blow out water in a pipe snorkel, but then if you are not at the surface, you cant breath.

    I totally back this. My wife and I used one last year. Initially I found it worked fine and my wife had no issues either. However the second day I used it I was really struggling to breath. Withing a few minutes I was finding it hard to breath and had to remove it to gasp for air. A percentage of air remains in n the small pocket your nose and mouth sit it and the mask doesn't expell all air. This is enhanced when holding your breath to dive down which these masks are really just surface masks. When you start to breath when you resurface you breath harder thus causing you to pant harder and possibly hyperventilating

    • @peterking2651
      @peterking2651 6 лет назад +3

      This goes to the physiology of panic. As CO2 builds up it tends to induce panic (I can't breathe syndrome). If you take short, fast breathes CO2 builds, inducing panic.
      With the military using closed circuit rebreathers you are taught to use "pendulum breathing" - inhale/exhale fully and continuauiously. Failure to do so will lead to CO2 buildup, potentially resulting panic.
      Have you ever noticed a scuba instructor trying to control a student with panic? They tell the student to stop & breathe deeply, that is to flush CO2.

    • @oriwan3786
      @oriwan3786 6 лет назад +3

      if you want to dive down you don't hold your breath. You can not dive down when you have air in your lungs. Please learn the basics for diving first, it can be dangerous when you force yourself down with air in lungs due to different pressure in your organs and blood. For example if you dive down rapidly with air in lungs, your can get tissue damage in your lungs. If you are bleeding and it will not get discovered this can be fatal. There are storys that persons died three days after they went diving due to tissue damage in the lungs and respiration problems and blood in the lungs.

    • @euantaylor4488
      @euantaylor4488 6 лет назад +4

      @oriwan what you're talking about applies only to scuba diving and deep free-diving. With everyday snorkelling and dives down to ±10m there is no risk of pressure related injury.

    • @peterking2651
      @peterking2651 6 лет назад +3

      oriwan Correct, for scuba. However you DO hold your breath for snorkeling. For SNORKELING, as you descend the air trapped in your air spaces (lungs, sinus..) will compress, but as you ascend the volume will increase (providing you didn't exhale) back to the original volume. However if you take a breath (from scuba) at depth that gas will expand. For example if a diver takes a breath at 10m/33ft and ascends without exhaling the volume of the lungs will double (leading to a lung expansion injury).
      Also with snorkeling you do not need to be concerned with partial pressure of gases (which effects gas absorption). Believe me you don't want to get in to tissue groups, M values and alike (that is beyond basic scuba divers, more for Dive Masters & Instructors)
      There are also "tricks" that free divers use to extend their time underwater, however that can lead to "shallow water blackout".
      So the bottom line is even with snorkeling take a class (in snorkeling) at your local dive shop. And for extra safety you can even get life vests designed for snorkelers.

    • @euantaylor4488
      @euantaylor4488 6 лет назад

    I remember seeing these when they first came out and they only had air go in through the snorkel and out the same way with no vents on the face for the air to be forced out with your breathing, if their is a leak with the mouth covering part then it will definitely fill with co2 over time. Without that knowledge you’re definitely going to pass out and drown to death without supervision. The new ones now have that feature where you can push the air out through the face vent but again if there’s that little leak around the mouth it will fill up with co2 so to be safe always have someone around to watch you and never dive more than 3 meters as well as always taking off the mask periodically for fresh air and for the mask to air out the little co2 built up if there was a small leak or not around the mouth.
