    Actually, he missed out the BIGGEST plus point. If you snorkel with an ordinary mask for two hours, the salt water makes your lips burn, and even crack. It also hurts your gums. But with the full face ones, the salt water doesn't touch your lips, (no burning or cracking), and you don't have to bite on the snorkel, which is much more comfortable. But they are terrible for diving down - he's right there. Basically, these are great on the surface, and terrible for diving, so take your pick.

      Hi. Can't find a definite answer to my question. I'm a complete novice, but am frightened to use the normal type because I have dentures. As you've used a full face, do you think it would work for me?

      @alisonlee3314 I also have dentures and using denture adhesive cream which greatly helps with old school snorkeling, i only watched this cos i now live in middle of Canada and while lakes are fun to swim some are not that clean to occasionally drink water while swimming and diving, i no longer dive as much as i swimm and this would help with that whole idea of keeping my mouth and nose clear of that water ( still looks goofy 🤪). So basically yes it would help you unless like he said you want to dive, having face underwater while swimming would be perfect as long as the mask has no problems, but you can try that denture cream if you want to go old school, it holds dentures in place better then my original teeth (pun intended 😀) and i can bite and chew apples and snorkels for a while, hope this help you.

      No, but you float while snorkeling and with flippers, it's effortless to be out for 3 hours. I'm 60 years old and fairly fit. That's all!

    I tried one of these out on a recent trip to St. Thomas and have to say it is really nice not having to constantly clear the snorkel and it did not fog up once during hour long snorkels. His cons are somewhat legit, but probably most snorkelers do not dive down > 5', if at all. Great to just float on top and observe IMO.

      If you have to constantly clear the snorkel while not going down... you're definitely doing something very wrong. And blowing out the snorkel is no problem whatsoever. And a properly fitting mask doesn't usually fog up once you know your mask.
      And going down is 50% of the fun for many people, why pretending most people wouldn't do it?
      I really don't understand this comment.
      Have a great day!

    I live in the Philippines and snorkeling is my passion. When I go out, I take both. If my dive is shallow, for just looking around, the full face is great, and provides a much more stable platform for an attached Go-Pro...but for spearfishing, I always stick to the traditional, tried and true combo.

    Been using these masks for approximately 10 years now and have enjoyed them immensely. I agree that they aren't much good for deep water and if that is where we are snorkeling I use conventional mask and snorkel. We are still using the original ones we purchased and have never had any mechanical issues with them. Simply love their simplicity! Trust me, if you ever did have an issue with it and needed to get it off, adrenalin aside, you would RIP it off instantly!

    There is another advantage of the traditional mask and snorkel. You can use them both whether you are snorkeling or scuba diving. Since even when you are scuba diving you still carry a snorkel with you. The mask works for skin diving and snorkeling since the regulator fits underneath the traditional mask.

    as a resident of Hawai'i, I see these a lot of different snorkels around here. I think the biggest plus to these full-face masks is the auto close valve when you dive down, or tilt your head to far. I've used a normal snorkel, and on many occasions at the beach, have seen people using a traditional snorkel, just to have Namaka almost kill them. You tilt your head wrong, or look at something and ocean water floods into the tube and next thing you know, life guards are bailing from towers as someone chokes to death with a literal lungs full of water. I understand that snorkeling should be taught in a class that people should attend, but tourists just don't want to do that. It's a tube you put in your mouth right? How hard can it be? So the auto close valve that's built into these are a literal life saver.

    We love our full face masks. we stepped up to the tinted masks which are even better. Great seal, no water gets down the air tube, great visibility and comfortable. NOTE: THE MASK SHOULD NOT FEEL TOO TIGHT. It should be comfortable. It will suction down on your face when you go underwater

    If you don't want fog in your mask just cover the inside of the glasses with saliva, let it rest for a minute, wash it off with water and then don't touch glasses with your fingers. My instructor teached me to do this in my first lesson and I never had a fog in my mask ever.

    It sounds interesting, and I like to draw attention to their specs, such as "Never ascend to the water’s surface faster than the bubbles released from exhaling." Professionals can handle such phenomena as the pressure difference, but I am afraid that an amateur can use it without safety, which can cause some serious problems. I will advise strongly to read the safety instructions...personally, I am not a pro at diving, but I know some physics ;) For example, we should all know the difference between taking a single breath at atmospheric pressure (when you do a free dive) and using diving equipment where instructions such as the above with the doubles are super important! Enjoy ;)

    I bought this mask but in early 2020, unfortunately covid prevented travel etc. so I haven’t used it yet, except it worked in the tub (no swimming pool). The reason i bought it as a recreational snorkeling mask for the amazing visibility and i could do little shallow diving with it. I like that it has a seal between the eyes and nose/mouth areas. Testing at home, i left the snorkel detached from the mask so i could block the air inlet with my hand. Mask on and hand over inlet, no air (water) entered the mask showed a good seal. When i tested taking air with my nose, the air entered the snorkle, then exhaling with my mouth, the used air exited the mouth purge hole. Nice, seems to work well

      Full face masks are bath toys.
      There is a reason they are known as "death masks" and "drowning aids"

    Can you address the concern that I’ve seen with full face masks which is that carbon dioxide can build up in the large space when the snorkeler is really exerting them self, like in a strong current or a long swim. How do these masks expel The exhaled air?

  • @OttoMatieque

    seems like the full face might be good for surface snorkeling. skin diving would scare me because of the difficult bailing out of the full face. with skin diving, you are frequently in a breathing deficit and anything that delays a bailout is a big negative in my opinion. given the opportunity, I would try a full face mask to see for myself.

      Yes, you can see me do it in the video. There is a stopper in the snorkel so not much water will come down to your face. But the pressure will squeeze the mask very tight deeper than 2 meters

    • @JoeOceanside

      Yeah these masks have a large surface area, so the deeper you go and the more psi (pounds per square inch) will be exerted against the lens and it could definitely crack

      Yeah I would recommend any of the major brands, Cressi, Mares, Tusa, Scuba pro, atomic, aqualung. Really they all should be fine but the most important thing is the fit. It needs to make good contact on your face with no pressure points and be comfortable. I would go to a dive shop if you can find one and they will let you try them on. Or buy and return a few on Amzon

    I'm going to discovery cove later this year (hopefully) and last time I went I did not get on with the two piece. The water kept going inside my face mask and getting my lashes wet. I ended up actually snorkelling for about ten minutes. I'm hoping to get a full face mask and will not be diving down and just staying on the surface. Are there any tips on using it for the sole purpose of swimming on the surface?

    • @JoeOceanside
      @JoeOceanside  4 года назад +6

      Make sure you have a good fit, tight enough so it seals, but not so tight it is uncomfortable. Breath at a normal consistent pace (not too fast), but breath a little deeper than normal so you flush out all old air from the mouth chamber with every breath. Keep your face down and enjoy the scenery below the water, many beginners make the mistake of trying to keep lifting their head out of water and looking above the surface. This will put you in the wrong posture, fatigue your neck and be uncomfortable. Just lay out, face down, relaxed. Also, if the water will be cold I would wear a shorty wetsuit, being chilled could ruin an otherwise great experience. Have fun, stay safe, and thanks for watching!

    He missed two very big points.
    #1 With the large area it is harder to find this type of mask that seals as good as a standard dive mask.
    #2 Less expensive versions of this type of mask can recycle co2 back into the breathable air chamber. This could be very dangerous.

      Hi thanks for watching, I mostly dive around fort Lauderdale and Key Largo, so I'm not too familiar with Miami. Fowey rocks lighthouse was a good spot near miami, it's a few miles offshore. John Pennekamp in Key Largo probably has the easiest snorkeling and it's not too far of a drive from Miami. They have a lot of charter boats if you do not have your own boat.

    is the fog coming from breathing only?....you can have a fogged up regular swimming googles.....i think the fog is also coming from the skin pores of the face

    • @JoeOceanside
      @JoeOceanside  4 года назад

      When I use the full face snorkel it never fogs, that was one of features I love about the mask. When you inhale the dry air comes in across the eye section and keeps the glass clear of fog, when you exhale the humid air it goes out a different direction away from the glass. No fog, very good design.
