We live near a Redwood National Forest when tourists get lost it's a huge expense with all the search & rescue teams and equipment...And what do they do when rescued ? They sue the national park for their stupidity.

A person who is new to snorkeling should take periodic breaks to rest and breathe, without the snorkel mask on. I used to vacation a lot in the Florida Keys and every year, I'd read; in the local newspaper; about someone who'd died from snorkeling.

I ran in to a 25 year old at the top of the stairs who had also done the same hike the day before doing the stairs, and he was saying his legs were screaming. It is not Hawaii’s fault for not warning people. In my opinion it is the responsibility of the tourist, but if they wanted to do something useful then ask all air travel to warn people when booking long flights. We fly to India, the Middle East, etc. From the USA and those are about three times longer than when we fly to Hawaii.

This happens here all the time. People do one of two things. Either completely overexert themselves or completely ignore posted warnings or warnings from local residents. Often times they do both.
Every person's body reacts differently. Couch potatoes can't just do activities that are physically demanding. It's not the fault of Hawaii that you're not physically prepared to climb Diamond Head or swim, (ESPECIALLY IN THE OCEAN) , for hours at a time. I worked as a nurse in the ER for 10 years on Maui. I know all about this.
Maybe so but more people are traveling now, people are fatter now and when we went to Hawaii 60 years ago we laid on the beach, shopped and shows. We didn’t do the more adventuresome things they do now. Now people fly 8 hours and go snorkeling when they land.

I’m curious… when trained in diving did they teach you to not go diving after being in high elevations? Did they teach you about shallow depth drowning?
They sure did, but if you go in the water at one atmosphere shouldn’t be a problem at all. It doesn’t mess with decompression. The only issue after a flight is dehydration and fatigue. However, you should wait 24 hours before flying.

I have seen this ROPE syndrome while working, very hard to reverse. Pt was intubated, given drugs to cause rapid urine loss. Left hosp 3 days later. ON MEDS. Takes an emergency crew of experienced staff and a hospital after stabilization.
Ive been going to Hawaii for work for over 10 years. Glad I never had to waste any bucks to see it as a tourist. Bali and other islands much cheaper and is where its at.✌🏻
Similar problems in Colorado, people fail to heed to high altitudes. Hiking at 10,000 feet elevation plus isn’t the same at 500 feet. Sand in the desert such as the Great Sand Dunes National Park will burn you unlike the sand at the ocean so don’t think about sandals or going barefoot. Learn before you go.

Ive been going to Hawaii for work for over 10 years. Glad I never had to waste any bucks to see it as a tourist. Bali and other islands much cheaper and is where its at.✌🏻

Similar problems in Colorado, people fail to heed to high altitudes. Hiking at 10,000 feet elevation plus isn’t the same at 500 feet. Sand in the desert such as the Great Sand Dunes National Park will burn you unlike the sand at the ocean so don’t think about sandals or going barefoot.
