All of the aforementioned results in ever-increasing levels of CO2 (carbon dioxide) in your system, and diminished levels of O2 (oxygen). Also, the snorkels on these masks are “dry”, meaning they seal when you submerge to keep water out. They can seal at inopportune times and can also jam shut because of sand, which can lead to panic. Rather than merely spitting your mouthpiece out, you have to remove the entire apparatus which can be difficult, or even counter-intuitive, in a state of panic. A state of panic will result in a RAPID increase of CO2, decrease of O2, and lead to feelings of suffocation, or even ACTUAL suffocation. @@lifeinthe5-069 Exactly. The standards in America are lower for many things. Then the victims are blamed. The same attitude used to be taken toward children who were preyed upon. It makes little sense.
Most snorkel masks fog up because they get salt water inside of them or people try to clean them out with salt water. I use a defogger spray or a Johnson & Johnson shampoo and water mixture that prevents fogging. Also, my full face snorkel mask does allow me to blow out any salt water that might get trapped inside, though it very rarely happens. sometimes I snorkel for hours and have never had an issue. But, I have heard a lot of cheap full face snorkel Masks have CO2 problems that do cause people to become disoriented and eventually drown.

I almost drowned in Kauai in 1996 and so many tourists do not get proper training on how to do activities in the water. If you boogie board or snorkel, the ocean can easily change leaving you at the mercy of anything. I was not aware of what I needed to know and a lifeguard saved me. I was a lucky one that day.
@@jenw5557 The lifeguard said someone drowned shortly before my incident and they are trained to look for folks without fins while carrying boogie boards or folks making bad, ignorant choices. Since that day, I don’t swim in the ocean. I agree with you.
I almost drowned on a tour in Maui. I didnt take one of the wrap around flotation devices. I started struggling and the tour operator wasn’t even paying attention. I held on to my sister and we were able to get back to the boat. ALWAYS take a flotation device. More people have drowned at Molokini then they tell you is what i was told by locals. I believe them. There are risks in anything. When I was in my 20s I went on a boat trip with a friend , it was a reputable tour company here in Australia, but it really seemed a bit dodgy to me, I saw several passengers get in the water and two were swept out away from the area, another boat rescued them, and then I see them try to get an older lady in the water with a broken arm. She is saying she can’t swim because of the arm so they throw her a noodle that she can’t hold on to as she climbs down the ladder and another passenger jumped in to get her. Another guy was stung by a jelly fish and that was enough for me to say no thanks ! The ocean isn’t a joke. There are dangers. And even as a non pregnant young lady I wasn’t getting in that water that day. Freak things can happen anywhere , and even getting in a car is dangerous and can lead to a fatality. But no I wouldn’t have gone flying or snorkeling at 30 weeks esp with another one at home. I don’t understand this baby moon thing ? And neither should inexperienced dreamers think that our ocean is going to fulfill their wishes, when they have no experience snorkeling in it. Who decided to put that mask on? The mask or the person?
I don’t know that they should be outright banned, but they should definitely come with a warning. I personally would never use one, or even a “dry snorkel” for that matter (prone to jamming and inopportune closing); but multitudes of people have used the full face masks without incident. There are certain benefits to the full-face masks, and certain people with mouth/jaw issues can ONLY use these types of snorkels. I would rather warn people and let them make their own decision.
Yeah, lets keep telling the government to rule over us peasants because we, peasants, are so stupid. Not everything that happens is the government's fault, like making stupid choices.
The state should ban these full face mask, they are dangerous. Regular snorkels can be spit out and allow you to go up for air, these face huggers are restricting when you’re panicking and try to gasp for air.
No, that would presuppose that most everyone using them would die. This family’s decision to go snorkeling without experience is responsible, not the mask.

Its SO sad. I worked for a snorkel rental company here on maui for two years and we never rented full face masks Any time a guest asked about them we always expressed the dangers. In fact no tours or rental places on the island do. They should be banned from being sold in hawaii.
Tragic. Sorry to hear this. Praying for those left behind to recover & find peace through their faith. Certified SCUBA diver here. There is false sense of security that somehow comes from folks using snorkeling equipment thinking it's safer & no need to have either a swim buddy or snorkel near others who are also snorkeling in the ocean. Always stay near others. RIP tide? Maybe. But remember a person who is drowning will "latch on" to anyone nearby with incredible force. Therefore the "rescuer" is unsuspecting of this death-grip of a panicking, drowning person and then they both drown. One must view the drowning person, and then go deeper underneath and from BEHIND that person and grasp them under the arms from behind and swim a sidestroke and never let that person TURN toward you as they will grasp you & you both may drown. If you must approach them from the front, then, at the last minute, dive under the water and come up behind them. This step is vital because someone who is struggling in the water will attempt to climb up on top of you to try to get out of the water. In doing so, they will likely drown you. Take a YMCA or swimmer's course on how to rescue someone in open water. Gotta have your wits about you - to think and react quickly when something dangerous or difficult happens unexpectedly - IF you're diving or snorkeling anywhere. Period.
This is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever heard. They were so excited to grow their young family. I just want to hug that little boy. I wonder how much trauma he’s endured missing his parents, his mommy the most. Rest in peace little Melody who never got to be born. My heart.
I have 4 or 5 of those masks, and sometimes they can play against you. If something blocks the airway a little or if you tilt your head back a little you can’t breath. It covers the airway fast, and once it’s blocked you can’t unblock it until you exhale. I almost died with one of those masks and I have plenty of practice with them. I am so sorry for the loss. Poor baby has no parents and no sister now.
One thing I learned when planning our trip to Maui is you can’t go snorkeling right after flying. I had heard that about scuba diving but not snorkeling. It causes what is called rapid onset pulmonary edema or ROPE. Always snorkel and scuba a couple days after a long flight

@@lifeinthe5-069 Exactly. The standards in America are lower for many things. Then the victims are blamed. The same attitude used to be taken toward children who were preyed upon. It makes little sense.
I’m confused too. What happened?
Most snorkel masks fog up because they get salt water inside of them or people try to clean them out with salt water. I use a defogger spray or a Johnson & Johnson shampoo and water mixture that prevents fogging. Also, my full face snorkel mask does allow me to blow out any salt water that might get trapped inside, though it very rarely happens. sometimes I snorkel for hours and have never had an issue. But, I have heard a lot of cheap full face snorkel Masks have CO2 problems that do cause people to become disoriented and eventually drown.
Seeing the 18 month old look at and touch the picture of his parents (and unborn sis) completely breaks my heart 😭 I am so glad he is blessed with a very loving extended family that will look out for and treasure him
I don’t think I’d be going snorkelling at 7 months pregnant just incase…..RIP beautiful couple and your little girl Love & Light 😢😢❤❤
Me neither!
I'd be scared to even go into the water at 7 months. They were a lovely couple.
I went at 6 months. But with a group and a tour guide. My husband is a great swimmer and I had a regular mask on. The tour guide was so amazing he was attentive and made sure I was good. I always had a life jacket. Looking back it was risky. But thank God the tour guide was right by side and of course my husband.
I wouldn't even fly in a plane. But I did have 3 miscarriages. So I stayed put for 9 months. Babymoons and Gender Reveals were not a thing back in my day.
@@MargotHypnos exactly what the heck
Don't ever use a full face snorkle mask. They should be banned.
Agreed and especially if you haven’t snorkeled before it’s easily to panic and cause you not to breathe correctly with it on! I dive with regular mask and snorkel those new full mask just looks awkward and dangerous in my opinion
@@howzit9397yeap, I agree. I have seen people use them and always wonder. I use the regular mask.
I JUST BOUGHT ONE FOR MY TRIP TO MAUI. I CAN'T USE A REGULAR SNORKEL.
@@420saralouplease try to figure out how to use a regular snorkle.
The full face masks have problems with clearing co2 from them. If the co2 doesnt get out you will feel like you cant breath and pass out.
Not worth the risk.
@@420saralou. I can’t tolerate a snorkel in my mouth due to jaw/dental issues. I live here and have been using a full mask for 8 years. I agree that a person can panic in one if they aren’t careful. Why were they doing these activities on a baby moon? Im pregnant myself and considered a baby moon two hours north of me to st George ut. And it was to literally do absolutely nothing but chill in a pool and get foot rubs.
People should be required to get certified before entering sea waters just like drivers ed. So many deaths can be prevented

30 weeks pregnant and snorkeling?
That was my initial reaction too.
30 weeks pregnant and FLYING 😢 ? RISKY, BOTH SITUATIONS
It's snorkeling......not skydiving. Women are allowed to go swimming. Are ya kidding?!!
I was always excited for my babies to come and not feeling I needed some adventure or break before they arrive. But that’s just me.

Having lived in Hawaii the stories of tourists doing things they had never done before like snorkeling, scuba, surfing

Politicians in Hawaii need to step up and ban these full face masks. Also, most locals do not snorkel in this area...Maui is not Disneyland
And neither should inexperienced dreamers think that our ocean is going to fulfill their wishes, when they have no experience snorkeling in it. Who decided to put that mask on? The mask or the person?
Hawaii is a joke... let's be real...
No why do people always want the government to take their rights away. Do you really think government is always the answer?

Oh man. Seeing the baby looking at the picture of their parents is just heart breaking
Go up for air? LOL Youre already up.

Absolutely heartbreaking. Prayers and joy to the family.
