They were wearing a full face and mask combo. It is believed that one of them panicked and did not feel safe enough to just take the mask off and swim openly in the ocean and the other one tried to save their partner. In my opinion, these mask/snorkel combos are super dangerous. As someone who lives here in the islands, I have seen many visitors wearing them that have panicked right in front of me. I tell them to take it all the way off of their face because they will float and then reposition it. I would advise that if you are going to snorkel, use a regular mask and snorkel. You can pop the snorkel in and out of your mouth as needed and the Mask stays on your face and keeps water out of your nose and eyes. When people are not used to wearing a mask and snorkel, they tend to panic because something is over their face. Those masks are just too hard to remove quickly and are claustrophobic. Once your brain start to panic, it doesn't matter if the threat is real or not it takes you a minute to calm down. Duke University researchers have found that many full-face snorkeling masks do not work as advertised and in some cases may increase the risk to snorkelers. I tell everyone that is coming to visit us to buy a regular mask and snorkel or borrow one of ours until they get more comfortable with what they're doing.

I tried a simple snorkel and mask a couple weeks ago just goofing off in the ocean with my cousin and it's so true. I couldn't wear it long and kept finding myself taking out the mouthpiece as it was very claustrophobic and kept making me feel panicked. I can't imagine how these others would make one feel!! My little fish of a cousin made it look so easy, swimming out there with her snorkel for hours. I didn't realize how freaky they can be until you are very comfortable with them!

I read on Facebook from Hawaii locals that the snorkeling masks they used, full face snorkel masks, are known to cause respiratory problems. It's possible that one had a breathing problem, and the other tried to save them, compromising both lives. So sad.

in hawaii, anyone can just go snorkeling, but people don't understand hawaii is in the deep pacific, these are not your little waves by the mainland coasts. These are strong waves that will overpower you like a leaf. plus they are not trained to breath using those cheap masks.

What everyone on here is saying about the masks is exactly what happened to me. I panicked and couldn't think clearly. Sometimes we refuse to be self aware and ignore signs around us. The universe has a strange way of whispering in our ear telling us to maybe slow down and just be centered. Early this year I started planning my vacation to Santa Monica, CA for the summer, but I just couldn't get around to booking the trip and accommodation. I normally had things pinned down by June, but it just never happened, summer came and went. During that time, I saw so many stories about all the crime, violence and homelessness in Santa Monica. Who know, maybe if I went, I could have easily been shot and killed. This is a sad story, what makes it worse is the little one on the way. But I understand the logic, when this baby arrives, it will be an extra handful and extra cost for vacation and maybe quite a while before can even think about budgeting for it. But that pregnancy was likely was a sign saying, stay put.

To those who say, "There is no God" or that "Christianity is a waste of time," and wonder why God allows tragedies to happen: This world is not our eternal home. This couple understood that. Why live in fear of death every day when you follow a God who has promised everlasting life?
Accidents and tragedies happen daily, not because God is cruel, but because we live in a fallen world marred by sin. Ilya and Sofia may no longer be with us physically, but their souls are alive, singing in eternity.
I encourage you, if you're reading this and feel uncertain, to seek the truth. The truth will set you free. You may believe it’s just a fairy tale, but that’s not true. As Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

@borshh_EA And what did this couple get for their devotion? Their time here cut short leaving their son behind who is now an orphan. That whole "mysterious ways" thing should be replaced by "utterly heartbreaking ways".

      @@joemarks8548
Ilya, Sophia and baby Melody, through their faith in Jesus Christ, are now with Him for eternity. Though their deaths were horrific and heart-wrenching, this tragedy does not make God cruel. It was a terrible accident. Their son, though now orphaned, will be deeply loved and cared for by his family. He will grow up surrounded by love and come to know the love of God. One day, he will be reunited with them when our time on earth is finished. God has a plan for him, watches over him, and is always with him.
You may not understand what I’m saying, and it may all sound foolish. But for those who believe in Jesus Christ, we know that no matter what happens in life, we are destined for something greater-eternity with Him. That is what truly matters.
There’s a story in the Bible, the Book of Job, about a man who loved and served God. Despite his faith, Job lost everything: his family, his home, his health, and his friends. He felt deep pain, anger, and overwhelming heartbreak, but he never turned away from God. Through his faith, God ultimately restored and blessed him beyond what he had before.
Again, until you are born again through Jesus Christ, this might be hard to understand. That doesn’t mean this tragedy doesn’t break the hearts of the family-it absolutely does, and healing will take time. The pain is real, but the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ remains constant and unchanging.
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
      - Revelation 22:13
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them."
      - John 3:36
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
      - Psalm 34:18
In times of brokenness, pain, and grief, it is comforting to know that God is not distant. He is near, offering comfort, healing, and strength. He understands our sorrow and is there to provide solace when we need it most.
      My friend,
I understand this may all seem incomprehensible if you haven’t accepted Christ. If you have questions or are struggling to understand the Christian faith, please reach out again.
“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
      - 1 Corinthians 1:18

I have accepted Christ but that does not mean I am happy to face a life of suffering because that is the road I was given while others have it so much easier. And if we are all going to the same promised land, why do some of us have to work so much harder to get there? Because God may love us all, but like the fathers here on earth, God has his favorites who ask & receive. The rest of us get a hard no as the answer to our prayers.

Who are you to know what God did or didn’t care about. For people like you, end of life is the end. For believers in Christ it is just a transition from this dimension into the next and not the end of the spirits life.
However it is given for a reason, we are to cherish it and not be risky or reckless. Unfortunately when you make risks to have fun outcomes like this can happen. Safer to stay on land I guess.
